Her voice quaking with emotion, ASA Christine Hernandez gave the opening statement for the prosecution today. Hernandez focused on the injuries to the child that was killed, showing the jury pictures of Lazaro's body as it was discovered, abandoned.
Manny Alvarez countered for the defense, telling the jury that Cardona was not a good mother and that the jury would not like her, but that Cardona did not kill her child.
The trial is expected to last through at least next week.

The state gave a compelling opening. The defense has a difficult job in this one.
LULU, it reports after the close on Wednesday.
Do you think SAO will ever get a death penalty again? They waived it this time. All we have to do is find one little juror who votes for life. Hmmmmm
Her voice was not quaking with emotion. What a sexist thing to say. She was powerful and persuasive.
If there is ever “emotion” in any asas voice, it is fake. They might shed tears during closing argument but they go back to their offices and LOL it up.
You are the reason trump reigns
the state gave an incredible opening with no notes. she should be commended and not criticized for being human and showing what many prosecutors lack, passion. plus she never used the word justice, she stuck to the facts, not one objection during the opening. The defense was aptly paying attention. Looks like the defendant will testify with the defense opening.
I am stunned- stunned- that my recitation of the prosecutor's opening- and my characterization of her voice as "quaking with emotion" is considered either sexist or a criticism.
It was not meant as such.
Male lawyers do the same, indeed Rumpole at the peroration of many of his closings will rise up, voice quaking and thunder that the defendant is INNOCENT.
It is admittedly contrived. But it works.
I would apologize but I truly fail to see that there is anything sexist or an implicit or explicit criticism of the prosecutor.
Am I that insensitive to women that I have missed this?
A lawyer whose voice quakes or cracks with emotion is a lawyer full involved and invested in the case. Something I heartily approve of.
I am open to re-examining my premises in this regard.
Sometimes the facts get in the way of good lawyering.
