THE CAPTAIN REPORTS:

ELECTION UPDATE .....

With election season in full gear, we can accurately report that we have been flooded with emails and snail mail items all inviting us to campaign fundraisers all over town. As reported on May 2, 2008 on this blog, there are nine contested races here in Miami-Dade County; eight in the Circuit Court and one in the County Court.

Beginning today and continuing each and every Wednesday, we will attempt to provide you with a weekly contest overview and then let you have at it and give us your opinions on why we should or should not vote for a certain candidate.

Let's begin with the lone County Court contest, in Group 42. The candidates vying for the seat are Incumbent Norma Lindsey and Challenger Lisa Lesperance.

NORMA LINDSEY
.....

Judge Lindsey presently resides at the Gerstein Justice Building. In 2005, she was nominated by the JNC and Governor Bush appointed her to the bench in November of that year. She did not have to run in 2006, so this is her first time with her name on the ballot.

Lindsey graduated from Marshall in 1987 and went to law school at the University of Miami. She received her JD in 1993. For the first six years of her legal career, she was in private practice handling commercial litigation. In 2002, she became Associate General Counsel to the Boys & Girls Club of Miami Dade County. She was also a member of the 3rd DCA JNC.

An interesting note about Judge Lindsey; she earned a track and field scholarship, (she excelled in the high jump) to Marshall.

You can read all about Judge Lindsey on her web site at retainjudgenormalindsey.com.

LISA LESPERANCE.....

Ms. Lesperance graduated from the University of Florida in 1987 and went on to obtain her JD from St. Thomas in 1993. She has maintained a private practice for more than 14 years. She handles all types of cases, but concentrates on family law and criminal defense. If you are a frequent visitor to the Gerstein Justice Building, you probably have run into her brother Robert or her father Lou. With the passing of Sy, Lou probably holds the banner right now as the "oldtimer" in the building.

This is the first run for office for Lesperance. You can read all about Lisa on her web site at voteforlisa.net.

Please do your homework on the two candidates. Help out our readers by giving us your comments, pro and con, on your experiences appearing before Judge Lindsey and with anything you know about Ms. Lesperance.

The election takes place on Tuesday, August 26, 2008.

Judge Lindsey has no idea what she is doing. It's like a friggin episode of "Life Goes On" in that courtroom.

I know that Lisa Lesperance has a blemished bar record, but at least she has criminal law experience.

No reason why Judge Lindsey should have drawn opposition. Granted, she was lost, to say the least, at first but the same can not be said now. This is no different than a criminal defense lawyer or prosecutor being appointed or elected and then being assigned to the civil division. It takes time. She is as nice and accomodating as can be.

I can't imagine how being a ticket lawyer (and no matter what her website says, that's what she is) makes Lesperance better qualified than the Judge Lindsey of today.

Judge Lindsey's website picture is hot! I wish she styled her hair like that for court.

The Florida Bar jerked me around about an expired credit card from a gas company that went out of business years before and demanded 11 amendments....over similar drivel... and someone is saying that Ricardo Corona was involved in the Sunshine State Bank scandal...YET he got into law school and was accepted into the Bar!!? Maybe it is a different Ricardo Corona or maybe it was part of the deal with the govt? Which is it?

Let the people decide! Every judge that's appointed should be required to do at least some form of merit retention if no one challenges them.

And term limits should be lower than 6 years. Getting a judgeship should not be a job for life unless you are worthy of keeping the position.

And there should be campaign spending limits so people will challenge the judges that suck and not be dissuaded because so-and-so incumbent has lots of money.

And judges should be precluded from accepting donations from attorneys, especially those who have cases before them. So much for the appearance of impropriety - I have a motion on calendar for tomorrow - oh yeah, here judge, have a check for $500. Ha.

just my 2 cents

Both are real nice ladies and both can be good judge but, Lisa is more qualified.

Watch Norma in action. She can not make a decision to save her life.

She seems frozen when pushed for a decision.

She would make a great civil division judge.

Norma and Ed Newman need to be in branch court or civil court.

anyone know the details of lesperance's public reprimand in 2002?

on another note, and more importantly, what a muffin ms. colodny is. lindsey's posters are fetching, too. lesperance is no slouch either. ahhh to be a plate of rubber chicken this summer.

What color is whitebread?

just wondering why it matters whether Judge Lindsey is "of color" would it really change your mind about anything, makes me wonder about this world we are living where a person's opinion about someone depends on what color that person is, sickening

How dare you say "of color?" What a jerk you are.

She is a very nice looking white lady but, what the hell does that have to do with anything.

Lisa is also a very nice looking white lady.

Differnce is simple.
Lisa has experience in criminal court.
Norma, after many months as a criminal judge still has no idea what she is supposed to do.

Both nice but, I vote for Lisa.
