The failing NY Times is 175 today. Just barely hanging on (not) after covering every major story from before Theodore Rooselevelt was inaugurated, WWI, the stock market crash, the election of FDR, WWII, The Korean War, the Kennedy assassination, the Vietnam War, the 1969 Miracle Mets, Nixon Resigning, the Reagan Revolution, the 1980 Miracle On Ice Gold Medal win by the US hockey team at the 1980 Olympics, both wars with Iraq, 9/11, the Obama Election, and of course the biggest story of them all- Mexico paying for the wall.
Speaking of which, the current administration is proposing a law prohibiting any reference to the president elected in 1960. History books will be re-written, going from the end of the Eisenhower administration to Johnson defeating Goldwater in 1964. Harvahard will rename its school of Government after Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, the current occupant of the White House or face deportation. Yes, they will physically remove an entire school across the border to the 51st Northern State. Or else.
Honesty
Today we are tipping our blogger hat to Attorney Norman A Pattis, Esq. His client Konstantinos Diamantis, 70, a former government official in Connecticut was facing a decade in prison for multiple convictions in Federal court for bribery. On the eve of his sentencing, (the night before his sentencing for all you robed readers) his client fled the US, ostensibly for Greece. (And of course he did it through Miami, where else?)
This is what Mr. Pattis said to the NY Times:
Mr. Pattis said that his client, facing the prospect of years in prison, had made the decision to live “on his own two feet in Greece,” and leave behind his children and grandchildren in the United States.
“I can’t fault him for the choice he made as an individual, while as his lawyer, I can’t condone it,” Mr. Pattis said.
Well said. We applaud the honesty. Sort of what we all feel (from what we have heard, never personally being in this situation as a lawyer) after a trial loss and sentencing approaching.
FATHER TIME
And finally, the greatest investor of our generation, Warren Buffet, 96, has announced he has stepped down as Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. In a letter to shareholders, he wrote "Father Time Always Wins."
Indeed.

The NY Times will be gone in 5 years. You run through a litany of historical events that it covered. But so what? That was its job. What you left out was an excellent daily crossword puzzle, a very good Sunday sports section, and my favorite part: the society column where you could read about weddings of people who had more money than God and went to schools I could not get a job at as a janitor. Always "John Henry McClemore Stevens III from Sag Harbor marries Priscilla Honeycutt Vanderbilt from the Main Line in Pennsylvania. They will honeymoon at his family estate in the French Riviera and live in Lattingtown, NY. The reception was held at Piping Rock Country Club." If you were not sure if you hated the rich and famous enough, a few weeks of reading this self-important drivel would have you running to watch Caddyshack for the 100th time.

Accurately covering the news is indispensable in any free society. Without that you don’t have a free society. The NYTimes has consistently been a place to get accurate reporting for as long as we’ve had a basically free society. Do they do annoying stuff catering to annoying rich Northeastern rich people? Yes. Should they have more competition? Yes. Do I disagree with a significant amount of their opinion? Yes. But they’re the only place doing the scope of real news they do.
