Theranos executive Elizabeth Holmes reported to federal prison on Tuesday to serve an eleven-year sentence. A few thoughts.
Does anyone think that if she got five years, she would leave prison and return to defrauding people?
Does anyone think people who are contemplating committing crimes really consider the sentence someone else got? In other words, is there any evidence to support the belief that prison sentences deter others?
The problem is the public perception that prison is easy and fun and that people like Holmes who get a three or four year sentence laugh at the criminal justice system and get to keep all their stolen money. Spend a day in prison. Spend a mind-numbing week in prison and then tell us that prison is easy and joke and that prisoners laugh at it.
We of course are not trying to influence DeSantis appointed Judges (DJs). You guys just keep calling balls and strikes and keeping sending poor people of color to prison for as long as possible. Nobody expects anything else of you.
Your Miami Heat won a game seven in Boston, becoming the second Florida team to win a game seven in Boston this year. Earlier in the playoffs the Florida Panthers won a game seven in Boston.
Both the Panthers and the Heat are eighth seeded entries into the playoffs in their respective leagues and both of the teams are now in the finals.

I don’t think Elizabeth Holmes is the poster child for these arguments. You have valid points for sure, but people actually died because of Theranos and faulty blood tests. Then, knowing she would likely go to prison, she went ahead and had two children. She is as manipulative as they come. She’ll commit crimes when she’s out because she’s narcissistic and crime is what she knows best. RIP Joe Rago

According to the sentencing letters submitted on her behalf, she plans to pursue other "ventures" as soon as possible. Her supporters who wrote letters for leniency said they would happily trust her with their money again and some argue she never did anything wrong and this is all because regular people just can't understand the intricacies of rich people business. So, yes, she would return to defrauding people at the earliest possible opportunity.

You assume deterrence of others is the only goal of criminal punishment. The public loves to see people who were high and privileged because of their fraud brought down and humiliated. When such people get away with no punishment and continue living better than the rest, that stirs discontent.
If prevention of future crime is the supreme goal, what is the solution? Non-prosecution and therapeutic rehabilitation for all offenses? Do we have evidence that makes society safer? Maybe. But places that try to use such solutions may also reduce their crime statistics by simply not counting or reporting crimes. Since police in the enlightened cities have given up on enforcing drug possession laws, I'm sure they have a lot fewer drug crimes reported, despite open air zombie drug markets of collapsed people. There's no better way to reduce crime than decriminalizing criminality.
And there's another side to the deterrence issue. Punitive advocates would argue the law does not deter because it has been defanged. We've all heard the sad story about kids given decades long mandatory minimums for first offenses. But the other side of that is criminals who often commit multiple felonies before they finally get hit with a significant punishment. Because of institutional bloat and due process, offenders can offend for years while catching multiple dismissals, diversions and probationary sentences before they finally do some hard time. Perhaps if we abolished our scruples about "cruel and unusual punishment" and eviscerated due process to allow swift and brutal sentences inflicted without recourse or appeal, then that would deter both the guilty and innocent alike. If we could rely more on remedies like flogging, mutilation, or execution rather than incarceration, that could really cut down on the prison population.

What a great time to be a sports fan in South Florida. Panthers fans watched their hockey team knock off the Number One-seeded Boston Bruins in seven games earlier in the Playoffs, winning game 7 in Boston. They open their Finals for "The Cup" on Saturday in Vegas.
Meanwhile, the 8th-seeded HEAT also knocked off Boston's beloved Celtics in seven games, winning last night on the Celtics home court. The Heat opened as 9-point underdogs against the Denver Nuggets. That series begins on Thursday night in Denver.
ESPN Analytics gives the HEAT an 11% chance of winning the Championship. (The same Analytics gave the HEAT a 3% chance of knocking off the Celtics).
