THE SHOT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD

From the weekend: President Biden shocked NATO and the world by calling for the ouster of Putin as the head of Russia

Ukranian fighters and citizens in Mariupol, surrounded and under siege, have refused to surrender and continue to hold out as a bastion of freedom against tyranny.

A scrappy number ten seeded UM Basketball team fell in the elite eight to number one seed Kansas while St. Peters, a tiny college in New Jersey - the NCAA version of Ukraine, finally fell to North Carolina, setting up a blockbuster Duke-UNC final four.

But that is not what everyone is talking about.

The shot heard round the world is that some spoiled actor who was upset about some jokes about his wife while sitting in the front row of the Oscars and nominated for best actor walked on stage at the Oscars and on world-wide- but not US television- slapped at, or slapped, comedian Chris Rock, who apparently doesn't know how to defend himself physically.

This is such a waste of time.

First, how many countless jury trials have we seen with assaults or battery charges less serious than what occurred at the Oscars? There will be no charges here, because sometimes people just do stupid things and criminal court doesn't need to be involved. Perhaps it is time for Ms. Rundle and her compatriot State Attorneys to approach the Florida Legislature and re-write the criminal code to reduce simple battery with no harm to a civil infraction and reduce all misdemeanor assaults to civil infractions.

Second, the Smith/Rock slap will get more airtime, an Oprah or Netflix special, and more commentary than the brave Ukrainian people of Mariupol defending democracy for the world, and that stinks.

Third, the slap and the F-bombs were shown to the entire world, presumably even in Russia, Venezuela, and North Korea, but not in the United States, where censors deemed the American Public needed to be protected from the slap. How stupid is that?

WARNING!!!: THE FOLLOWING VIDEO SHOWS ONE SPOILED ACTOR SLAPPING ANOTHER. THE AUTHORITES HAVE DEEMED THIS VIDEO AS DANGEROUS AND HARMFUL TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. PLEASE PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

Once again Rumpole's hot take is off the mark.

This "news" is not getting more attention than the atrocities in Ukraine. Straw mn argument.

This is not about "spolied" actors. Rock made a joke. Maybe he didn't know about her medical condition. In any event, a joke at a significant other's expense and involving a medical condition would trigger most people.

You'd all be reading Wil Smith's obituary if I was on stage instead of Rock

Rump- I had a hundred bucks on Smith smacking Rock at Cesars in Vegas at 25,000 to 1.
I am a winner right???

Maybe now we will all see the perverasive mysogny of stand up comedians. It is time to stop ALL stand up comedy because of how bad women are treated. Just read some muther-f'ing poetry.

To one of the 958's- so when Trump joked about a reporter's disability, he should have been smacked too??

WHAT was Wil Smith thinking? Violence never solves anything.

Rumpole, while it is not as important as other things in the world. It does show a couple thing about our culture that are worth noting. One man commits a battery in front of a global audience, and no one in attendance has a problem with it. A blog of mostly lawyers debates it and mostly cracks jokes too. One man makes a joke about a woman's appearance at a formal televised event, only appropriate at a comedy club. Because the formal televised event is so boring they don't broadcast most of it and use comedy club style to avoid irrelevance.
Wake up lawyers. Provocation is not a defense under Florida law. Six months probation, anger control class, $250 fine, court costs, early termination. Because the same stuff happens in back streets and a slap is not where it always ends.

Just feeds right wing jerkoffs who love to point out black on black violence to excuse their hatred. Two respected actors on top of their game and the way to resolve is to physically attack? Great example to the kids out their. Great fodder for the right wind assholes.

Actually, Mike Tyson showed himself to be quite restrained recently when some dude in a bar was trying to fight him.

Why is Chris Rock a “spoiled actor.” The man is a brilliant comedian, a trenchant observer of the human condition. There is nothing wrong with making a joke about an attractive woman with a shaved head by comparing here to an extraordinarily attractive lady who starred in a movie where she sported a shaved head. The man was hired to crack wise.

After the boorish slap, Chris Rock’s behavior was impeccable; grace under pressure. I’m sure he expected humor, not an attack, and his conduct in remaining in control while hosting the show was tremendous.

11:47 watching a black guy batter another black guy for joking about a black woman: "Man, think about the white supremacy."

1:29 there is something wrong when the women-attractive or not-head is shaved because of a medical condition. Be better.

Like former Presidents Carter Bush Obama (fake president) Reagan Truman Roosevelt Eisenhower I join in condemning the deplorable conduct and statements of fake very bad comedian Kris Rock and his horrible treatment of women and Jada Smith Pinkett Smith. No one has ever seen or heard anything as bad as what was said. He should be taken off the Oscars and banned. I have never treated women like that or never said anything about any woman has bad as the unrepeatable things Kris Rock said when he was thinking he was funny.

I have always loved Chris Rock and never liked Will Smith. Last night just confirmed that I am an excellent judge of character. Rock is a class act and Smith is just a posturing "full of himself" phony. He did do an excellent acting job in King Richard but I think the Oscar should be stripped from him and given to another well deserving nominee of which there were many.

1:54 - it is because I care:

“Roger Ross Williams, a black member of the Academy's board of governors, told the Hollywood Reporter that the confrontation drove him to tears because "it reinforces stereotypes about black people and it just hurts me to my core".

Whether you like Chris Rock or not, he handled the interaction with Smith with class and dignity.
Perhaps, if she is as sensitive to criticism as she may well be, she should wear a wig.

No way they should strip it while the rouge's gallery of rapists and pedophiles still have theirs. The call would have been to award it to him but not allow him to give an acceptance speech during the same show.

Another class act in attendance was Denzel Washington who looked seriously pained by the incident. The ridiculous spectacle detracted from the award that went to Quest Love who was clearly flustered. What a selfish, entitled, and immature person Smith revealed himself to be.

Am I the only one that thinks this was staged? The news about the Oscars leading up to the event was that the ratings for the Oscars have been sliding for years and that this was going to be a potential "make it or break it" year for the Oscars. The show was revamped to make it more viewer friendly, and some people were talking about the Oscars being over.

Then, all of a sudden, Will Smith slaps Chris Rock on stage, on LIVE television, and the world is buzzing with talk of the Oscars.

Will Smith is not some young turk. He's been a screen entertainer for 25 or 30 years. Do you really believe that he is was not fully conscious of being on screen? If he was mad at Rock, he could just as easily have slapped him back stage; as between men. But no, that's not what happened.

This was a stunt.

Didn't Wills wife recently tell the world that she blew some young rapper last year?

What an actor Smith is. He should win next year's Oscar for Best Performance in An Apology Speech. Invoking God, family, love, his mother. That performance was brilliant. And don't forget the tears. What a great acting job.

Agree

eaglehaslanded said...

9:13 is correct. I have worked in the "industry" off and on for years as a producer and there is zero doubt in my mind that this is staged. It is making headlines for a near dying award show. Classic Hollywood.

eaglehaslanded nails it. All staged. If that slap had hit like it should have based on the velocity of Smith's arm, Rock would have been on the floor. And the reaction is the exact opposite of what one would do after getting sucker punched. Sorry. If the ratings were sky high, this never would have happened. On a funnier note, remember the accountant wannabe celebrity a few years ago who handed Warren Beatty the wrong envelope. He was fired and never heard from again. He must be wondering: "damn, all i did was hand over a wrong envelope. This guy assault someone on live TV and is awarded an Oscar."
