NOW HE BELONGS TO THE AGES

The President left the White House in the early evening.
He and his party went down H Street NW for about 7 tenths of a mile. The presidential party made a right on 10 Street NW and went down three blocks before stopping in front of Ford's Theater.  The show that evening was the hit "Our American Cousins".
April 14, 1865. Abraham Lincoln  had about 24 hours to live.

Five days earlier General Lee surrendered the Confederate Army of Virginia to General Grant.

The Presidential party arrived late for the show, but the President was reported to be in a great mood. Lincoln and his wife were accompanied by Henry Rathbone, a young officer in the army, and Rathbone's fiancée- Clara Harris who was the daughter of New York Senator Ira Harris (the only Ira to serve in the US Senate we think).

Sometime between 10:15 and 10:25, John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor who had failed in his attempt to kidnap the President on March 20. 1865, snuck up behind the President and shot him in the head.  Rathbone leaped up and grabbed Booth. Booth dropped his derringer and produced a knife and stabbed Rathbone in the arm. Booth then fled the presidential box, leaping on to the stage and shouting Sic Semper Tyrannis  ("Thus ever to tyrants") - the motto of Virginia. Booth's left foot and his riding spur became entangled with a flag draping the box, and Booth landed awkwardly, breaking his leg.

Dr. Charles Leal was in attendance and gave aid to the President who was slumped over in his chair. He was soon joined by Dr. Charles Sabin Taft.  Leal removed a blood clot from the entry wound behind the left ear of the president, and Lincoln's labored breathing improved. Soldiers  arrived and took the dying president through a light rain to the house of tailor William Peterson. The doctors had judged the ride to the White House as too difficult for the dying president.

Lincoln's oldest son  Robert Todd Lincoln arrived along with Secretary of the Navy Gideon Wells and Secretary of War Edward M.  Stanton.  Throughout the night more doctors and government officials arrived, as well as Lincoln's faithful secretary John Hay.

At 7:22 AM on April 15, 1865, the 16th President of the United States died without regaining consciousness.
Secretary Stanton was widely reported to have said "Now he belongs to the ages".

Hands down, my favorite president. One story I love about him was that he was extremely disorganized as a lawyer. So much so that he stored his most important papers in this top hat to make sure he did not lose them on the way to court.

It has also been reported that Stanton’s statement was actually he belongs to the “angels” but it was ether edited into ages or misquoted and memorialized as such. Lincoln and Washington were the two of the greatest figures in history but Lincoln’s use of the language was so perfect and produced so many beautiful passages, speeches, letters and anecdotes that he has no equal in terms of readability. He belongs to the angels and the ages.

I well aware of the controversy as it were over Stanton's pronouncement when Lincoln died. I like to think he said "Ages" rather than "angels" because the former is so Lincolnesque. It's what Lincoln would have said and of course it holds up better over time.

I wonder if it's any coincidence that it's Jackie Robinson day today in Baseball. Every player is wearing number 42. It's a wonderful way to celebrate the man.

To the person who sent a comment about a judge without opposition - I cannot accept the criticism of "stupid and mean". I think you need to do a little better with less of an ad hominem attack before I can publish it. I don't have any allegiance to that judge or any judicial candidate for that matter. But as to all people running or up for re-election or retention, calling people dumb, stupid, and lots of other curse words that I have received in comments I don't publish won't cut it. I make one exception. If you want to call a candidate dump and stupid and you leave your name and email, and I contact you and you confirm it, then I will publish the comment as you have been identified.

My favorite Lincoln story is not even about Lincoln, but about a young boy who began using his name. Johnny Clem buried his mother when he was nine years old. With little else to do, he ran off to join the Union Army. Repeatedly sent home because of his age, he marched with them anyway, finally being given a drum, and when that was shot through with cannon, picking up a musket. Injured multiple times in battle, he became the youngest non-commissioned officer in US Army history. He added Lincoln to his name and Johnny Lincoln Clem lived to old age and is now buried in Arlington.

Lincoln could inspire even nine year old boys to heroism.

New Broward judge accused of drunken, anti-Hispanic ...

www.sun-sentinel.com

Barely a month into her first term, Broward Circuit Judge Barbara Duffy is being asked to remove herself from a criminal case over allegations she made drunken, anti-Hispanic statements at a judicial conference in front of the chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court.

I guess I don't have to ask what is in the judicial water pitchers up there?
