JUDGES SMITH AND RUIZ SCORE FED NOMINATIONS

It's been so busy that we missed last week that Miami Judges Rodney Smith and Rudy Ruiz were nominated to the Federal Bench by POTUS.

DOM of course didn't miss it and his post is here

The nomination of Judge Rodney Smith is especially satisfying. If you've ever seen Judge Smith speak in public, he has an amazing life story that includes as a young man seeing ASA Don Horn speak about being a prosecutor and making up his mind to do the same- and then going to college and law school and becoming a prosecutor.

Judge Ruiz was, inter alia, a clerk for Judge Federico Moreno. Pretty soon there won't be a Judge in South Florida who didn't clerk for  Moreno, which goes to show how well and carefully he chose his clerks.

The nominations of both Judge Rudy Ruiz and Judge Smith are ones we can all be proud of.
Good luck to both.

I watched Rodney Smith do the right thing a few times. I am a fan of Rodney Smith.

Go Rodney!

But, your loyal El Capitan, did not miss the news .....

REPRINTED, WITH PERMISSION FROM THE CAPTAIN:

The Captain Reports:

BREAKING NEWS FROM THE WHITE HOUSE:

President Trump has nominated Judge Rudy Ruiz and Judge Rodney Smith for two of the open seats on the Southern District; he also named Roy Altman, a former AUSA and current partner at Podhurst Orseck (can you say big time pay cut).

It should have Hanzman. How did the JNC pass him up?

Clearly a racist administration.

Fight the power in occupied America.

Moron.

I have appeared before Judge Smith on several occasions and tried a jury trial with him. He is an excellent trial judge, has great patience and demeanor and will be an asset to the federal bench. I am sorry to lose him as he is one of our better judges but happy for him as he deserves it based on where he came from and the challenges he faced. Oliver, his baliff is wonderful as well.

We should push for Hanzman for Federal Judge for one of the remaining 3 openings. Ask Scola or Moreno for their opinion. We need more brilliant jurists appointed by Trump.

You posted the list of interviewees; others applied but didn't get interviews.

If you ask Moreno and Scola - they would say John Thornton. They pushed for him to join the US District Court.

Why would Hanzman not apply?

Didn’t Scola and Moreno want him?

Maybe he will apply for the Third DCA?

I honestly don't understand everyone's love affair with Hanzman. Maybe he was great in criminal (I wouldn't know). He's not great in civil. And I suspect that he'd be terrible in federal. He's got a big head and a bad attitude. Terrible combination for life appointment.

None of the three nominees has the experience to get a lifetime appointment. Nelson should not return blue slips.
