Miami activist who helped found the Alternatives program- Georgia Ayers, has passed away. The Herald Obit is here.
Ayers commanded the attention of local judges, city officials, public defenders and the media.
“Mrs. Ayres was one of Miami's most influential civil rights activists who worked tirelessly to guide troubled young people away from the criminal justice system and encouraged them to lead productive lives. Her work as the founder of the Alternative Program will always be remembered as well as her contributions to Miami-Dade County’s history,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez in a statement.
PLAY BALL
If four of the best words a baseball fan can hear is "pitchers and catchers report", then the two best words in the English language- first place obviously being "NOT" & "GUILTY" are "Play Ball." Pitchers and catchers reported yesterday. Opening day is not that far away.
Great job by the Captain getting Judge Emas to write about his memories of Irwin Block.
See you in court.

Georgia Ayers left a path that few will ever be able to follow. She will be sorely missed and her constituency sorely disadvantaged
Ask David s (state) Markus how she took down a judge who pointed a gun from the bench at his client who was her kin. REGJB Legend.
Alternative to what? Probation ? 364? House arrest. ? Inquiring minds want to know.
Georgia served the community in her own way...her impact on lives of many people is surely of benefit...we who labor here seek truth and justice...she did for the least of these...getting older.. seeing the future we all face
Too bad there aren't more people like Georgia Ayers. She is going to be missed by a lot of people.
I saw case after case where Georgia turned a young black guy from a life on the street to a life with a job and a family.
Hats off to her.
One of the REG legends. When I was a new ASA in the 80's, she was an established fixture in the building, trying to help make a difference in people's lives. When she spoke, judges listened, and so did I. She wasn't one to just wax on with a sob story about giving a kid a break. She kept it real. RIP.
Stephen K. Talpins said: Georgia gave everything she had to help others. Wish we had more like her. RIP.
Is this a Justice building blog or an obituary? So much sad news about our friends and coworkers.
Georgia Ayers was a living embodiment of the prayer of St. francis. " lord make me an instrument of your peace". She believed in people and brought out the best in everybody she encountered. A rare human being.
I will miss her, her determination, love of the law and willingness to step up.
