The latest news as of 9:40 pm tonight is that Republican Scott Brown has pulled off the miracle upset and beaten Democrat Martha Coakley in the election to replace the seat liberal Senator Ted Kennedy held for the past 49 years.
A Republican Senator from Massachusetts. Who would have ever believed that was possible?
Query: When was the last time a Republican held a senate seat from Massachusetts?
Of course the larger issue here is that the Democrats have just lost their 60 seat filibuster proof majority. Under Massachusetts law Brown cannot be seated before January 29, 2010. So the question is : does the Obama Administration jam through the health care plan before Brown can stop it, or does the President accept the will of the people of Massachusetts who well knew that a Brown victory could stop health care reform?

Last Republican to hold a Senate seat from Massachusetts was Edward Brooke, who was defeated by Paul Tsongas in 1978.
While Brown's win is surprising, it is not earth shattering. Remember the following:
1. The economy is still in bad shape and independents often tend to vote with their pocketbooks.
2. Coakley ran a lousy campaign to say the least. Once the Democratic nomination was hers, she acted like she had already won.
3. Republicans have had some statewide success in Massachusetts. Between 1990 and 2002, the state elected GOP governors four straight times.
Do the Democrats have issues? Yes. Do I expect the Democrats to lose Senate and House seats in November? Yes. Should the Democrats be concerned? To a degree. Is the this state for a GOP rout? No.

I was tired when I made my posts last night. The final sentence of my last post should have read "Is this a precursor of a Republican rout? No."
The republicans found a way to jam their crap down everyone's throats with way less than 60.
Also, let's not forget that a fair number of the "democrats" really aren't.
We need to break up healthcare reform into small pieces of reform and force the republicans and the democratic posers to publicly vote against specific provisions like eliminating pre-existing condition restrictions, Rx medicine cost controls, etc. Taken INDIVIDUALLY, many of the provisions being considered are actually popular.

The Florida Bar is an absolutely useless organization staffed by completely inept lawyers who cant get a real job.
Mass. has universal health care so everyone who thinks that this is a referrendum on Obama's health care plan needs to relax. Additionally, it's not like democrats with their 60 seat majority were united in a uniform health care plan. Hence, regardless of losing this seat, Democrats should do what the Bush administration did, pass the Health Care Plan and other items through reconciliation and tell every Republican/Conservative pundit who has a problem with it, deal with it.

as I am knows, Republicans may not
have won Senate seats there recently but they have had two Republican Governors (Weld and
Romney). This is not really such
a surprise as you and the media are making it. Coakley was plain
horrible and she got what she
deserved. I bet she would stand
outside in the rain and snow now
if it meant winning the race.
