GOODBYE BENNETT

BREAKING BLOG NEWS

Oh Susannah Nesmith and the Herald have the scoop HERE

Bennett Brummer will NOT run for re-election.

Strange, but he didn't clue us in first. We cannot imagine why.

Now thats breaking news. I did not see this coming. I mean I like knowing BHB and KFR are in charge of legal system in Miami. They have been like the rock that held the REG together from both ends of the legal system.

Thank God KFR is staying. Can we do a BHB don't retire campaign?

barzee would be an exellent pick! does anyone know who carlos martinez is?

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately, the jokers posting re Barzee may lead the uninitiated and unaware to think he's some kind of viable candidate. He's not. He's not qualified, he's not electable, and well, he'd be running for the wrong reasons. For some mysterious reason he gets a lot of sympathy on the blog, which exists only out of ignorance of his history with the PD's office. Being the PD is not a job for a loose cannon.

Accept Carlos Martinez as the next, (imminently qualified) Public Defender, in a landslide.

6:09 Very funny grammatical error -- Martinez is "imminently qualified" -- which means he is not yet qualified, but will be in the near future. I think you wanted to say Carlos is "eminently" qualfied (but he is not). Your version is both funnier and more accurate. On the other hand, Barzee isn't even imminently qualified. Isn't there another Phil Hubbart out there somewhere?

Carlos Martinez? I thought that guy was a Senator? Why the hell would he want the PD job?

Anonymous said...

Rumpole, how long are you going to protect Barzee from the inevitable?

Anonymous said...

Where is E. Georgie on all this. She is the best lawyer in that office if we are being honest. Is she gonna call HT and make this thing right or will she have the courage to run herself?

As usual, most of the comments connected with this blog demonstrate that the authors don't know a damn thing about the public defender's office or the potential candidates qualified to run it. Carlos Martinez is "eminently" qualified to be Public Defender. He has been out working in the community for years. He is well known to community leaders as a reformer of the juvenile justice system (he started the movement to unshackle juveniles, as an example), he has the ear of numerous legislative figures of importance to the criminal justice system, and he has years of experience in the management of a public defender's office that was recently named by the NLADA and a committee of the ABA to be the best public defender's office in the country. No one, including Bill Barzee, is nearly as qualified to run the country's best PD's office. Any one who gives a damn about maintaining the quality of an institution as important to the criminal justice system as the Miami PD's office should support Martinez in 2008.

i understand that former pd, tom morgan is strongly considering replacing BHB.

Have you seen Dallas play this yr? Nothing "vanilla" about their style.

I bet you thought Parcells was a great coach, huh? Same team, but much better results under Wade.

Just saying someone sucks doesn't make it so. Facts speak otherwise.

The Herald reports:

"In a cost saving move, Bennett Brummer has tapped Bill Barzee to replace him as the Dade County Public Defender." 'I have a stamp that says 'approved BB' and a stamp that says 'denied BB'. "If Bill Barzee replaces me, the office and the State will not have to incur additional expenses ordering new stamps for the new Public Defender."

Rookie coach Cam Cameron made one big mistake - this was a field position game and the Steelers had the field for the entire first half.

The Fins had the chance to turn it around in the 2nd half - they should have punted and stuck Pitt. inside their own 10. Instead, they went for it on 4th and 15. They had not gained 15 yards on any single play the whole game.

The play was to move the field and get the Steelers to make the mistake - on their side of the field.

Cameron's error, the ball is now on the Fins side of the field - again - may prove to be the difference in this game/

Let's hope not

I can tell that most everyone that blogs on this site is just eating crap. If you are interested in the survival of the judicial system in Miami Dade County from a public defense stand, Carlos Martinez is the ONLY qualified person that can run the Miami Dade PD office. He is well known and liked in Tallahassee, he is involved in community programs, serves in several committees that help our youth, actually cares about the clients that the PD office represents. Carlos Martinez has my vote………

Anonymous said...

Carlos, please stop posting. It is beneath you.

Anonymous said...

Who cares whether Carlos cares about PD clients.

I know PD's who did not "care" about their clients in the way you mean but got great results, and PD's whose hearts never stopped bleeding and their clients got fucked time and again.

That kinda shit is irrelevant.

The rank and file at the PD do not like Carlos Martinez. He is out of touch with the pit lawyers (just as
Bennett was) and has no clue about
what goes on in court on any given day. No pit lawyer is going to learn anything about trial work
from Carlos. No pit lawyer is going to go staff a case with Carlos.

Carlos like Bennett is a politician in a job that needs a
trial lawyer with leadership skills. The number of trials the
PD's office has done over the past
four years has decreased each year.
The number of tough pit lawyers who don't take shit has gone down
each year.

The reason this is important is because a tough PD's office that
forces the issue and is not scared
to go to trial, helps all of the defense bar. We all get better deals in courts where there are
hardcore PD's. Whereas in those
courts with weak PD's, we all get
screwed.

ROD VEREEN--A REAL LAWYER FOR PD

As an ASA going through the juvie division, my first encounter with Bill Barzee was not pleasant as he tried to pull a fast one on me on my first day in juvie court. I was told by other ASAs not to trust him. I also remember that for some reason or another, he was in juvie as a CLI and not an APD becasue he was having "Florida Bar issues."
Dont know if that meant he couldnt pass the exam or was having a bit of trouble going through the background process.

As far as Public Defender candidates are concerned, I can think of about 50 people more qualified than him.

I don't think either Barzee or Martinez bring any change to the PD's Office. Martinez has been Brummer's hatchet man for years and will continue in Sleepy's ways. More Weed, more Aaron, more Warren, more of the same old, same old. Barzee will be a divisive force. That is evident from reading the comments here.

Maybe, just like it is time for change in the SAO, its time for real change at the PDO.

There must be a real quality candidate out there.

As a former pd there are plenty of problems in the office, Carlos Martinez is not one of them. Yes, Rory is a complete asshole and jerk who doesn't give a damn about anyone at his office except for a few short skirt wearing girls and his bossom buddies and yes it would be great for the office morale if they would let Rory go because not one pd who isn't an old timer who likes, trusts or respects Rory on his pastry eating high horse. Carlos is an honest guy who gives a damn about his worker bees which would be a nice start for the office
