The most iconic sports photograph?
May 25 1965. Neil Leifer a 22-year-old photographer sent by Sports Illustrated to cover the fight in Lewiston, Maine captured the moment. Round one. Ali hit Liston with a short right in their rematch from when Ali won the title from Liston in Miami Beach. Because of Liston's mob-ties and Ali's speed, many didn't see the punch and called it "the phantom punch" and opined that Liston took a dive. He did not. Ali put him down.
The photo didn’t even make the cover.
Look closely between Ali’s legs. Senior Sports Illustrated photographer Herb Scharfman can be seen holding his camera. In a recent interview Lefier said his colleague had his choice of seats ringside and took the wrong one.
If you watch the video of the knockdown you can barely see this moment. Ali kept moving and swinging his arms. Leifer caught the moment with milliseconds to spare.
Remarkable.
Happy Memorial Day.

It looks like Borchew standing over MVZ. Sleepy time!
Long time reader of your blog-- 60 years ago-- wow!! I wasn't even born yet! But thanks for the info.
Is that Kenneth W. with Judge Meek Robinette in the second row on the right? I think so.
First, Ali was the greatest boxer ever. Now for the rest of the story. Here is a crazy thing to say but it is true. Ali was Donald Trump before there was a Donald Trump. A PR genius who merged the world of boxing and show biz. He brought the theatrics and morality play of professional wrestling to the boxing ring. Through crafty self promotion and the ability to create what pro wrestlers call “heat,” he made himself and his compatriots a load of money. A close reader of Ali’s interviews will see that he harkened back to his youth when he watched Gorgeous George, he of the heel variety in grappler parlance. Ali noted that the platinum blonde bad guy filled the seats and made people rich. He followed suit. His MO was a precursor to the ‘70’s anti-hero made famous of Al Pacino, Clint Eastwood, and Charles Bronson. On the second fight (and the first), you need to watch both to understand that both were dives. Liston failed to answer the bell in the first after six rounds where Ali barely touched him. Liston was brutal. He had served 5 years in prison for armed robbery. No way he ran out of gas. On the re-match, I think half of the women Liston dated in his life hit him harder than Ali did. And in the first round? Sorry. It does not pass the smell test. This is a great post. Brings back memories. To get more of an insight into Liston, I recommend Night Train by Nick Tosches. Keep up the sports history Rump. You know your stuff.
And 35 years ago we had the infamous Memorial Day melee at Christie’s involving thrown mashed potatoes, a cigar, some of Miami’s most esteemed citizens and a lawsuit so scandalous that the judge ordered the records sealed until 2012. And when 2012 came the Clerks office at first couldn’t find the file and then said the contents were inadvertently destroyed. No one believes that. Powerful people paid to keep their name out if the news all those years later. The Memorial Day Melee remains a dark stain on Miami’s past.
What happened Memorial Day at Christie's 35 years ago ? Inquiring people want to know. Who ? Why ? Come on... Spill the beans mister.
That is correct! Meek had purchased a pair of ringside seats at a Sotheby’s Auction
Hey Rump. Question:
How much vacation time do Miami Judges get?
Does anyone ever check? Seems like some on social media are traveling around the world every month?
Just wondering.
Where are the Pino tapes
Maybe Mr. Weaver, the esteemed reporter from the Miami Herald, is already completing a journalistic investigation of “vacation” times of the judges of Miami?
Perhaps another look into the actual daily hours spent by Miami Judges in court.
Video by news of judges going home after their morning calendars five days a week?
Older Justice Building folks remember the Ch 7 report. It was embarrassing and devastating.
Oh well. Not saying it’s so. But it would keep me in the building working or trying cases for others?
So the main conspiracy theory going around is that all of the judges are using their vacation time now due to the regime change coming and our new administrative judges "beliefs".
Yeah, refresh our memories, please (a lot was happening back then with a bunch of mayors and other electeds/appointeds getting investigated/charged/arrested, but this one escapes some of us old-timers….).
30 working days.
Can’t wait until there is a regime change at the SAO.
Yes, I believe you are correct. Ali was Donald Trump before there was a Donald Trump. We know Donald Trump does not take kindly to criticism. JD Vance once compared Trump to Hitler. Now, Vance is Trump's vice president[-elect], according to a story published by Reuters on July 7, 2024.
https://www.reuters.com/world/us/jd-vance-once-compared-trump-hitler-now-they-are-running-mates-2024-07-15/
So how did JD Vance become Trump's vice president? Why would Trump even tolerate JD Vance in any capacity? The answer, in my view, is Chief Justice John Roberts.
Usha Vance, wife of JD Vance, is a lawyer who clerked with the justices of the Supreme Court: Judge Brett Kavanaugh on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 2014 to 2015, and Chief Justice John Roberts from 2017 to 2018.
Candidate Donald Trump was shot during an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania in 2024. If President Trump were to die or become incapacitated while in office, JD Vance would become president. That turn of events might please or satisfy Chief Justice John Roberts.
Mess with Borchew get burned
Wtf does the use of leave by judges have to do with the SAO?
Nothing
Jus a public service announcement
