Why was Rumpole taking the stairs?
First, there are significant cardio-vascular benefits for taking the stairs.
Second, an escalator was not working.
So we called the Miami Dade Department of Escalators (Motto: "Life has its ups and downs") and in classic bureaucratic speak were told this: "During the time the courthouse was shut due to Covid, the department made no repairs and conducted no maintenance because the escalators were not being used. Now that the courthouse is open and people can walk in sick as can be without a mask, the department will conduct regular repairs and maintenance during the hours of 8am to 12 noon, as needed."

SURFSIDE
Judge Hanzman has tentatively approved an 83-million-dollar settlement in the Surfside building collapse. In practical terms, the settlement is the similar in value of the contract for the Milwaukee Brewers' back-up second baseman. All is not peachy with this litigation and settlement. While Hanzman was effusive in his praise for the settlement: "Passes muster with flying colors" the judge wrote in his order ratifying the settlement, the Herald (Motto: "Trying to be relevant in a digital world since 2013") quoted one disgusted survivor as saying he was getting 30 cents on the dollar for his apartment and he would have nowhere to live.

You can pinpoint the day Western Civilization began its decline: April 6, 1973. Ron Blomberg stepped to the plate in Fenway Park with a DH next to his name.
The Surfside issue is more nuanced than the media reports convey. It's not a final settlement; it's an allocation agreement between various sub-classes of plaintiffs.
The allocation agreement provides that individuals who lost property only will receive $83m in total. (The appraisal of the building valued all units collectively at $96m). Many unit owners have publicly stated that the value of their units exceed $96m; however, this appraisal was performed by an incredibly reputable company (and it appraised the value of the units immediately before the collapse based on comparable real-estate offerings).
In exchange for the $83m, the property owners are being released from substantial potential liability. Under Florida law, unit owners get specially assessed (up to the value of their units) for liabilities of the association that exceed the association's insurance.
In this case, the damages for the wrongful-death claims vastly exceed the amount of insurance available. Accordingly, if this allocation agreement had not been reached, there would have been a very very real chance that the property owners would have the entire value of their units wiped out through special assessments--leaving them with nothing. Zip. Zero. Nada.
The property owners also have the ability to opt out of the allocation agreement and pursue their claims. In my humble opinion, that would be a very poor choice.
