SANDRA JAGGARD HAS PASSED AWAY

Assistant Attorney General Sandra Jaggard, known for her dedicated work defending criminal convictions in capital cases on appeal and post-conviction proceedings, passed away Tuesday, at the way-too-young age of 51.

David Ovalle and the Miami Herald have the obit here.

Ms. Jaggard was mostly unknown to us, but she was well respected, and her work upholding the most serious of convictions and her advocacy on behalf of victims and their survivors is something that the citizens of this state will miss.

Court is closed Wednesday for the Jewish day of atonement.

Sandy was the expert at defending the death penalty. She was an excellent appellate attorney. Sorry to hear this news.

There will be very few comments here not because anyone didn't like Sandra but, because very few people really knew her. She worked in the background. Appellate attorneys stay out of court. When Sandra was in court, she was very reserved and low key. She was very respected for her work. RIP.

Sandy taught me so much as a young AAG. She also always paid for my drinks. She was a tough nut to crack but well worth figuring out. Sad news.

Sandra Jaggard was a top-notch capital litigation and appellate specialist. She toiled in relative anonymity, but those judges she appeared before, as well as those who worked with her and on the opposing side, knew just how gifted and passionate she was. Most of all, she exhibited a humility that is personified this Helen Keller quote:

I long to accomplish great and noble tasks, but it is my chief duty to accomplish humble tasks as though they were great and noble. The world is moved along not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker. -Helen Keller

I was just about to call Sandy today about a case I have (had) against her. She and I had four death penalty appeals against one another. Although we disagreed about the legal issues in our cases, she was always professional and cooperative. I tried to break through her tough exterior to get to know her on a personal level somewhat, but it seemed like she kept up a barrier that most of my opposing counsel drop after awhile, so I never really got to know her other than as an advocate for the State. Just as many of us are passionate about representing our clients, I kiddingly said a few times that "Sandy is on a mission from God to have my client killed." I respected her abilities and tenacity, and am sorry for her family and friends' loss.
