Miami, really all of Florida, is lucky to be served by a crusading and muckraking newspaper like the Miami Herald. And today, the Herald has really outdone itself again.
The Herald broke this shocking story, which we are sure has all of you gasping in shock and surprise:
Florida's prison system is underfunded!
"NO!" you must have shouted in pure disbelief. "Say it ain't so Joe!"
And yet, sadly, it is. Our prison system is underfunded.
Read the story here, and weep.
In other shocking news, the Herald is reporting that spring is on it's way, the Republicans and Democrats aren't getting along, Miami has beautiful beaches, and cell phones are here to stay.
We are so lucky. Really.
Enjoy your Sunday.
When you see something that is not right, not fair, find a way to get in the way and cause trouble. Congressman John Lewis

Let's get private prison corporations out of the equation.
Fish wrapper
Let's find out what private prison companies do and don't do. I have never known the government to do anything better or more economically than private industry. You might start by comparing the programs that are in Geo-operated facilities and compare them with state facilities. I had a client at the Geo facility near Moorehaven that had all sorts of programs and educational opportunities that they were able to sponsor despite their disgusting accumulation of profits.
The Herald is repulsed by private enterprise and capitalism. It just makes them sick. One can only wonder why they haven’t transferred ownership of the Herald to a Co-Op of their extremely left-leaning reporters.
The Professor said:
There was a time, Rump, when your sarcastic comments were actually true of the Herald. Those of us who were around remember that Gary Hart never became the Democratic nominee for President because Tom Feidler and his cohorts investigated and broke the story of Hart and Donna Rice. They also were responsible for the McDuffy case being pursued. The Herald was once a GREAT newspaper. Alas those days are gone.
Ha ha ha ha ha!
Excellent, Rumpole, Old Boy. Really excellent.
What a rag. So perfect its relegated to Doral.
I fully agree Professor, which is the anger that drove me to write the post. The Herald used to be a paper that from time to time had national importance. Now, not so much. The article was a ridiculous SOB story. i there an agency in Florida that cannot say its underfunded?
If I was the editor I would have crumpled the story, tossed it at the reporter, threw her out of my office and told her not to come back until she had something for me.
The Herald was once great. For the last 20 years, it's been a tabloid. Really a fall from grace. Haven't bought it in 15 years. Thoughtless tripe.
Lol....like the intrepid jay weaver "writing" his "news articles" directly from the usao press releases.
Dear 4:32,
There are certain things that the sovereign does just because he is the sovereign; for example, warring with other nations, coining money, taxing, confiscating private property for public purpose. Among these core powers of the sovereign is the power to punish. Prisons exist to punish.
It is the obligation of the government to carry out government functions. It is a duty. It may be cheaper for others to do one’s duty, but, it is wrong.
Prisons for profit is just wrong, it's not about the government not knowing how to do things.
