From Raul Chacon, Esq, at Houck Anderson:

Subject: Domino Tournament in support of David Paulus

Hope the holiday season finds you and your loved ones well. The purpose of this email is to invite you to a fundraiser to benefit one of our own, David Paulus. As many of you know, David has been a lifelong prosecutor and a friend to us for many years. He has been a tireless and dedicated public servant and is currently the Director of the South Florida Money Laundering Strike Force. Recently, David was diagnosed with a brain tumor. As you can imagine, he and his family are now on a journey that is going to be not only physically taxing but also emotionally and financially draining.
We hope that you can join us on Friday, January 14, 2011 starting at 7:00 p.m. for a night of dominoes to benefit David and his family. All proceeds and donations will go to David. Details of the event are in the attached flyer. In the meantime, please keep David and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Best wishes to all of you for a healthy and happy New Year. See you on January 14th!
Sincerely,
Raul J. Chacon Jr.
President

Rumpole says: It's been a tough month of December but things don't always have to end badly. Here's a chance to step up for a friend and colleague and help him win his battle.

We can't print the flyer but here are the details:

January 14, 2011 at 7:00 PM at the Newport Beachside Resort in Sunny Isles, 16701 Collins Avenue.

$40.00 per team for dominoes. (team dominoes? we never knew...)

Call 305-302-1996 for early registration. Hosted by "MDPD Force Basketball team."

Lots of good food and drinks as well.

Hat tip: Rick Freedman for forwarding the email to FACDL and our spies who forwarded it to us.

I don't play dominoes. Can I show up with a nice check, have a drink, talk to friends, and leave? I want to make a donation.

Did Paulus open an account or has anyone opened one for him? I'd like to donate but can't make it to the fundraiser.

Paulus is a great guy and deserves our support.

2010 has been a tough year for almost all. To have lost someone you loved, to suffer through an illness, to have watched your finances or home disappear or worse for some .... I am wishing the folks at the Justice Building whom I miss and respect greatly a wonderful, healthy and successful 2011. Happy New Year to all.

I am hopeful that we are better lawyers, family members, mentors and human beings in this year. I am hoping that we have learned from and taken away some of the teachings of those of whom we respect. I also hope that we can go ahead and help the less fortunate to have a better life or at least hope.

There is not just a genocide in Darfur - which is much ignored to my dismay, but there are people suffering right here in our community - and even within our circle of friends and family. Let's be more sympathetic to the criminal charged with a crime where we clearly understand that the defendant has REAL emotional or mental illness. As a defense lawyer, let's truly be sensitive to the pain that a victim or a family member is going through. As a Judge, let's not be carried away with our appointment or with elected office .... for as we learn, those who are without the attributes to be respected and just, will lose their seat and be just another lawyer one day. Judges - follow the example of the "greats" ... act with kindness, respect, preparedness, temper justice with mercy and, for goodness sakes, be human.

With that said, I wish Rumpole and all of my friends and colleagues a wonderful, peaceful, kind and happy new year...

Me too. Maybe someone can teach the Gringos how to play dominos.

Best wishes to David.

How come you have to hit the publish button twice to get the note to show up on top that says your comment was saved and will be reviewed by the communist party committee?

"No refusal" DUI checkpoints could be coming to Tampa.

Tampa, Florida-- With New Year's Eve only days away, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration expects this to be one of the deadliest weeks of the year on the roads.

But now a new weapon is being used in the fight against drunk driving.

It's a change that could make you more likely to be convicted.

"I think it's a great deterrent for people," said Linda Unfried, from Mother's Against Drunk Driving in Hillsborough County.

Florida is among several states now holding what are called "no refusal" checkpoints.

It means if you refuse a breath test during a traffic stop, a judge is on site, and issues a warrant that allows police to perform a mandatory blood test.

It's already being done in several counties, and now Unfried is working to bring it to the Tampa Bay area.
