Fear is rippling through the REGJB, which is not surprising since the court system leaders completely ignored our entreaties weeks ago to scale back the court system.
Stay tuned here and we will keep you updated. Here is what we know:
Judge De La O declared a mistrial in a trial that began on Monday when a person working in the courtroom became ill. That person will be tested if the flu-like symptoms continue for 48 hours. We will keep you updated on this.
There is also an issue with Judge Benevides courtroom/staff.
Tom Hanks has tested positive for covid-19.
The NBA has suspended the season after a player tested positive.
What can you do? SOCIAL DISTANCE
Work at home. Even on Wednesday as we went about our day, people tried to shake hands and hug and kiss for greetings. STAY AWAY from people.
Control your food and beverages. No more Starbucks. No more McDonalds (or 11 Madison Park for us). Make your food at home and do not eat or drink out.
Call Judges' chambers and ask to call in for reports. Ask for continuances for trials. DO NOT GO TO COURT UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. Our community leaders have failed to lead, so now we have to protect ourselves.
We will be protected here in Florida. The virus does not survive in heat over 70-75 degrees. That is why winter is called cold and flu season. We are passing that season and this virus should burn out if ...IF we practice safe and common sense practices and procedures.
JUDGE SOTO- please cancel civil court hearings that cannot be conducted by phone. NO CIVIL JURY TRIALS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
JUDGE SAYFIE- please cancel all criminal trials for defendants not in custody. This week there have been several misdemeanor jury trials for defendants not in custody. This is now a dangerous practice-bringing citizens of this county together to try a nonsensical case. PLEASE STOP THIS NOW.
FLORIDA SUPREME COURT: Please issue an order suspending deadlines on cases.
Use common sense. Watch your hands. Stay away from large social situations. This will take a month or so and things will start to trail off in the US. While you have some more time, read the blog.
When you see something that is not right, not fair, find a way to get in the way and cause trouble. Congressman John Lewis

"Make your food at home and do not eat or drink out."
Does this mean fat middle-aged lawyers should stop taking 3 hour lunches and afternoon martinis at this or that steakhouse and bar?
This is so scary RUMPOLE. Your post seems to be common sense. The germs in the justice building are beyond levels seen in most public areas. The jail breeds germs not yet seen by the CDC.
Please be careful everyone. Bring your Hand Sanitizer everywhere you go.
Also - DON’T check your stock holdings until Thanksgiving 2020. Those who were thinking about retiring in the next year - sorry. Go Heat. Oh cancelled.
I am with you on I’m 90% of what you say.
But why would you say something so obviously and patently incorrect like this?I had to read it a second time thinking that, perhaps, you were being facetious:
“We will be protected here in Florida. The virus does not survive in heat over 70-75 degrees. That is why winter is called cold and flu season. We are passing that season and this virus should burn out if ...IF we practice safe and common sense practices and procedures.”
The fact that you would say something like this undermines your other points. I’m still shaking my head...
I know that there is:
MICHA JOE’S and also LATTE LARRY’s, but I insist that there must be a:
“REIZENSTEIN PHILZZZ” ... the best coffee.

The virus has been limited to a certain temperature and humidity range
KFR, DOC, chief judge, clerks and chiefs of police need to move swiftly:
1. Cease arrests for specified minor offenses
2. PTAs wherever and whenever possible
3. Expedite RORs and the posting of bond: 4+ first appearance calendars daily instead of two (re-assign judges to manage), extra DOC staff to process bonds, extra PDs assigned to first appearance to monitor arrestees time until first appearance
4. Remove all status dates from court calendars through May 31, reschedule all soundings and trials for cases where speedies have been waived and defendant OOC
5. Institute arraignments by phone for PAs and adopt blanket waiver of defendant appearance for PD clients. (This will likely cause courts and PDs to miss lots of FTA clients, but desperate times. Mitigate this by ensuring police get good phone number for arrestees, which PDs will get from arrest paperwork).
6. Immediate issuance of gloves and masks for all corrections personnel, and secondarily, all inmates
7. State of emergency order that courtrooms are closed to public, next of kin absent petition to the judge
REG should be nearly empty for a month
I heard that when the lockdown begins, women find men out at bars to be very sexy!
We have a lack of leadership. Nobody knows where the Big Easy E Elortegui is. He is the leader we would turn to in these times. Shumie is holed up in his cigar shoppe, and Sam Country Slom is bunkering down in the mountains of North Carolina. Who will step up and lead the 11th judicial circuit out of this crisis?
THE CAPTAIN REPORTS:
Quite possibly the funniest tweet ever:
The World Health Organization has announced that dogs cannot contract Covid-19. Dogs previously held in quarantine can now be released. To be clear, WHO let the dogs out.
Cap Out .....
lmao who let the dogs out
I'm PANICKING
I need to hear from Judge Soto that she is monitoring the situation closely. Then I'll know ny health is safe at a courthouse. Until then I am concerned she is handling some trial or calendar and is NOT monitoring the situation closely. Please please monitor the situation closely
What's worse, the mold at the downtown courthouse or the coronavirus?
