SATURDAY IN THE PARK

BELATED ELECTION CONGRATS: We have been remiss in not congratulating two REGJB regulars who also won election this past Tuesday. Kionne McGhee, a former ASA and current Regional Counsel attorney won election to the Florida House. Mr. McGhee is a great guy, a fantastic lawyer, and will do us all proud.

Former Dade ASA Cathy Vogel won a primary against current Monroe County State Attorney Dennis Ward, putting Vogel in the general election against republican Mark Kohl- her former boss. Here is the story: Ward ran again Kohl four years ago and primarily campaigned against wasteful spending, including Vogel's  $140K per year salary as a chief assistant in Kohl's office. When Ward won, Vogel quit and went into private practice. 4 years later Kohl registered in the general election as a republican and Vogel challenged Ward in the democratic primary, campaigning on her experience as a prosecutor in Dade and Monroe. Now it's Vogel vs. Kohl in November.  We endorse Ms. Vogel all the way!

HURRICANE ANDREW 20 YEARS LATER.
Where were you when Andrew roared though South Miami?
We were holding on for dear life.
For some reason the City of Homestead (motto: "Don't forget us") is having a celebration. The Herald reports here.

We've walked to court with the National Guard providing security  as downtown burned in the aftermath of riots; We've lived though floods and storms and even one term judges (Peter Capua anyone? a very nice man btw), but we've never lived through anything like Andrew.

Best memory of my life. 25 yr old asa at the time. Living in apt north miami. Had 49 yr old Brazilian neighbor. Just divorced. Super hot. Tried to fix me up with her daughter. Storm hit. She got scared. Was all alone. Knocked on my door. Spent two days in bed with her and dated for two yrs.

No such thing as a super hot 50 year old. Sorry man.

In NMB it wasn't so bad. I lost power for 2 days and my Dad for a week. My Uncle in N. Miami lost some trees. Besides that No real damage. South Dade truly suffered. Much of that was Homes NOT constructed of CBS , but framed construction, like central FLA. When the inland storms come Central and N. Fla will see that inland cities are not safe and DO NOT deserve the reduced costs of their Hurricane Insurance. You Know they pay less then we do and complain they supplement our premiums because they pay too much.

Went diving on the Blue Fire south of Fowey on the Saturday. Gorgeous day. Sunday morning on the way to the office to pick up a file for trial noticed all the hubbub at the grocery stores.

Picked up some water, candles and batteries that afternoon. Power goes out at 11:30 p. Aluminum pool enclosure rips off house at about 2:30 a, shingle roof flies off about 30 minutes later and water pours in through the light fixtures in the living room. I'd been through Betsy in the 60s (played in the street during the eye, no lie) but swiftly realized this was my roof that just flew off, not my Dad's.

Put the girls in the bathroom under a mattress behind as many walls from the outside as possible. Patrolled the perimeter of the house periodically. As the storm moved past us (two miles south was the eye), winds pummeled the front door. It was literally vibrating but miraculously held.

Things subsided at dawn. We started cleaning up immediately but it wasn't til about 5:30 p. that wife and I realized that we had almost completely forgotten it was our anniversary.

no injuries, damn lucky, but no power for 4 weeks, no phone for the same and $150K of damage. All our pines sheared 12 feet above the ground . Carried my 4-year old daughter each morning as she woke the first week so she wouldn't be spooked by the devastation outside the door. Blue roof for long time (notwithstanding every roofer east of the Mississippi and not on house arrest showing up) and repairs not complete for 8 months.

Judge in Martin County held me to a hearing one week after storm. haha, what hurricane.

Last story. Down here we draw our water from a well. No power, no water. No water, toilet doesn't flush -- the final indignity (and guaranteed to piss off the wife). Procured a generator on day 2 but stupidly fried the pump with the wrong voltage. After an arduous trip to Little River for supplies and education, single handedly replaced, installed, re-piped and re-wired the water pump, no leaks. Not bad for a lawyer. (on the way back Loree Feiler was directing traffic on US1 since there were no traffic lights)

Next storm. I'm going to WallyWorld and sit it out.

Sometimes reading this blog is like being in a high school football locker room after practice: more lies per square inch about men's sexual prowess than there is sand on the beach. Me? The lack of AC gave me an excuse for two weeks not to even think about making love to my then wife. I thought I was in heaven. Now, my age gives me an even more reliable excuse to get away from having sex with my now second and soon to be ex wife. Thank God for ESPN.

Vogel has learned from her mistakes. She's matured, and she's done a great job in Monroe. Dennis Ward played stupid politics and lost to a better more professionally run campaign.
As someone who has litigated in Key West, I think Vogel is good for Monroe County.

I just watched a Kit Kat commercial. How come everyone in the commercial is thin? You know those chunks eating all that chocolate and candy aren't thin.

I hate these brand new stay at home moms who think they're all of the sudden a cross between Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs and Einstein. Blowing up like a balloon and having a baby doesn't make you some great inventor so that your new version of some stupid diaper or sippy cup will now sell millions and make them some stay at home business mogul. The fact is having a baby doesn't give them anymore business sense then they previously had (which probably was zero which is why they got married and pregnant) and probably just makes them less desirable to their husband now that they've added 70 pounds or so.
Do us all a favor and stay at home and out of the business world. if you have extra time, join a gym.

Hey AG--- Being a mother is the hardest and most unappreciated job in the world.

BTW-- You are a doofus.

Who would have guessed--Angry Gurl hates not only kids but moms as well. She doesn't seem to be too fond of men either. Just exactly who does she like?

Allstate came sweeping down thru Pinecrest checkbook in hand and paid me 85K for pool screening, some broken windows, one cracked garage door frame and a few roof tiles.

I had just finished an 11 month Bankruptcy case where I billed an average of 19K a month. With other regular firm business averaging 14K, my business interruption insurance was just as anxious to resolve the matter quickly as Allstate and gave me 250K to settle everything up front.

Sorry guys but Andrew was great to me. New car, new boat, European vacation while Miami sweltered with no AC.

She also hates obese people, calling them "chunks".

AG stated-- "Having a baby doesn't make you some great inventor...."

Oh really? Why not talk to the tens of thousands of couples who are not able to conceive? Having a baby is one of the most miraculous things. Not only have you insulted every mother around the world but also your own mother who carried you for nine months and brought you into this world. If you hate society so much why not move to your own private island and make your own rules and live the rest of your pathetic and miserable life alone.
