HANG ON SLOOPY

Perhaps this serves as a good a warning as any to our new Judges, and some of the older Judges. We have never seen such egregious conduct in Dade County, although from time to time we have seen Judges refuse to set aside BW’s for people who were clearly confused by the sounding/trial dates.

TALLAHASSEE - (AP) --
A judge who jailed 11 people because they were late for traffic court after being directed to the wrong courtroom lost his job Thursday. The Florida Supreme Court unanimously ruled he was unfit to remain on the bench.

The justices said the jailing and strip searching of the 11 misdirected motorists capped a series of complaints of intemperate conduct against Seminole County Judge John Sloop, 57, of Sanford.

''Judge Sloop's indifference to the anxiety, humiliation and hardship imposed upon these 11 citizens reflects a callous disregard for others that is among the most egregious examples we have seen of judicial authority and lack of proper judicial temperament,'' the high court wrote in an unsigned opinion.

The justices also offered an apology on behalf of the judicial system to the citizens of Florida, Seminole County and the 11 jailed defendants. They came to court on traffic citations ranging from driving with a suspended license to having an illegal tag.
As part of the same investigation, Sloop had been accused of ignoring court rules by refusing to release one defendant on a minor charge and acting more like a prosecutor than a judge through rude and abusive treatment of another.

Sloop admitted he violated judicial canons in all three cases. At a Judicial Qualifications Commission hearing, Sloop blamed his behavior on undiagnosed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and said he had since received treatment for his condition.

Sloop expressed no bitterness over the decision, saying he joined the justices in hoping his removal will help restore public confidence in the judicial system.
''I spent my life helping people understand they are responsible for their actions,'' Sloop said.

``I am responsible for the grievous things that I did.''
Sloop said to believe otherwise would be hypocritical.

Rumpole says: Good riddance

PS: Our favourite federal blogger, David O Markus with a K has some real good stuff on his blog lately. From the Supreme Court's dwindling docket, to coverage on the Padilla torture allegations, and a link to a poignant Miami Herald article we missed on Miami Attorney Ellis Rubin's farewell to friends and colleagues as he remains hospitalized with advanced cancer.

Rumor has it the Q's X mass bonus's are larger than most ASA's earn.

Everyone's favorite soon to be former Judge from the south is said to be turning down lucrative high 6 figure civil firm partnerships because he is dedicated to public service and waiting for the president to come through for him. Also, he is a sure shot to pass through the democratic judicial committee when nominated.
That's what I hear.

which judge are you talking about?

Anonymous said...

7:16 is talking about Hernandez. IT IS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN and I think those LSD flashbacks are getting to be too much. We are going to refer you to NASA. They want to know how you got out in into the universe so quickly.

Batman says:

Now that is a "trashing" worth posting. An admittedly deserving end to a judicial career. However, the article in the Herald seemed to indicate that there were other elements to his conduct. Unfortunatley Judge Sloop "slid down a slipper slope."

See you in the dark alleys of the city

why are we acknowledging these stupid posts about hernandez - hes not getting any 6 figure offers, no presidential appointments. Look for him to do personal injury in some small office somewhere.

Straight off today's Herald...

FLAMBOYANT JUDGE GETS DEAL FOR TV

Miami's own Circuit Judge David Young has a deal to do a television series, according to the trade magazine Media Week.

The show will bear his name and be produced by Sony Pictures Television network in the fall of 2007, Media Week reported. It's already set to be picked up in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, the magazine reported.

Young is known for, among other things, his pictures of penguins -- there are dozens gracing his chambers -- as well as his refusal to tolerate curse words. Defendants who curse have to donate a dollar to the Humane Society.

Young has been a circuit judge since 2001 and a county judge for eight years before that. He recently made news when he sentenced two America West pilots to jail time for operating a plane while drunk.

you go boy!@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Does this mean that Young will never again have to come up with some lame excuse for not trying any cases, except when Court TV is watching?

He was criticized for wearing that penguin costume.

Comments about anyone's sexual orientation, even if they are "out" is just not appropriate. Nobody says "Vice President Dick Cheeney, who is a hetrosexual...."

(of course there maybe a reason for that, but you get the idea.)

So I removed some posts, blah blah blah.

OK I am the lawyer with the info on Judge Hernandez and I can tell you that the Bush people love him because of his prior military service. So do the downtown civil firms. I am not telling you he is the brightest bulb on the christmas tree, just that in this day and age of show over substance, he meets the criteria. Lots of the big civil firms would love to have a former Judge who is a Vietnam war Vet. The Senate Judiciary Committee is going to be run by democrats. Everyone knows Bush looks for conservatives with a compelling story to get them out of committee. Hernandez has both. Just watch and see. And then apologize when I am right.

I saw the Q in court today covering for one of his minions, pick up a DUI file cold, and wipe up the floor with some unsuspecting ASA. And he has a bum hand to boot.

Fear the Q

BEING A FORMER JUDGE, EVEN A CIRCUIT JUDGE HAS NO INFLUENCE ANYMORE TO ANY LAW FIRM.THEY ARE A DIME A DOZEN AND THE ONLY REASON THEY ARE JUDGES[MOST OF THEM] IS THAT THEY CANNOT MAKE A NICKLE IN PRIVATE PRACTICE. THE TRIALMASTER...............

Rumpole said...

Objection over ruled. I could care less if he is on the cover of Gay Weekly. I don't want people on MY BLOG mixing our issues with a person's private sexual preferences, even if that person could care less. I care. That's what matters. Go to "whosgayinmiami?.blogspot.com" if you care for that stuff. I don't.

Yeah. Tell that to Mastos, Cain, etc. They made something of themselves, not like those deadbeats, Harnage, Chavies, and Colby.

Anonymous said...

I give Q his due.
But for me
Its the BIG E.

Elortigui is my guy.

Anonymous said...

Has everybody gone insane?
Hernandez is not getting any offers or a federal judgeship.
Q and E are high volume low trial/low cost DUI mailer-lawyers. Get a fee and take a plea guys. Both of them. Chavies is making big bucks at Ackerman/Harnage got a Employment Comp Judgeship, and Colby just made millions on a cuba suit.

Rumpole: moderate this inane crap.

I like all this BS.

I am starting to think Rumpole is batting for the other team. Not that it matters.

rumpole: interesting that you don't delete homophobic posts or denigrating the homeless but say something true about a judge and as o.j. would say "Lookout".

Anonymous said...

4:11 you are taking hallucinogenic drugs or have forgotten to take your medications. No one would hire an idiot like Hernandez(except as a delivery boy)No governor would appoint him to a Judicial position

Anonymous said...

to 4:31

Chavies is making buko bucks as a partner at a major downtown Miami law firm; and Colby has made so much money he doesn't even know what to do with it - he has homes in California and Florida.

Anonymous said...

to 11:29pm...Chavies and Colby knew when to leave the bench and went out and made a ton. Chavies is so well respected by the big firms and Colby made multi millions just in the last week with a $91 million (collected already) verdict against Cuba! Smart move. Scola next to leave to a civil firm for $$$ and drive a Bentley?
