CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY 2024

Here we are, down to three football games for 2024. Two will be played on Championship Sunday and the rule for the day is to keep emotion out of your selections.

KC at Baltimore. We have a visceral dislike of both teams. We are tired of seeing Mahomes in the Super Bowl, and tired of seeing his TE's girlfriend jumping around in luxury boxes. We can quote from Blackstone, but we cannot tell you one song Ms. Swift has sung. Nor do we ever care to know. We have other issues with the Ravens which go back a long time. Suffice to say we cannot bring ourselves to root for either team.

But here is our advice. The smart money- the professional money- the unemotional money- went on the Ravens as soon as the line was posted as Ravens -3. It was bet up to 4, at which point the chatter was how can you not take KC and Mahomes in an AFC Championship game and 4 points?  And the answer is that he doesn't win all his big games. Ask Tampa Bay and Brady. The Raven played the 49ers a few weeks ago when San Fran was being called the best team in the NFL and the Ravens beat them like E. Jean Carrol suing Trump.  It was a total rout.

The weather will be bad, so the under 44.5 is enticing as well as the under 214.5 passing yards for Jackson. The Ravens have a better defense and a better run game, so if they get a lead, they will run and Jackson's passing yards will be held down.  Fun game for sure, we just cannot root for either team. But the pick is Ravens -4 hosting their first ever AFC championship game.

Lions at 49ers.  This is an easier game to pick. All good things must come to an end, and that includes the Lions magical run. San Fran is the better team, and they are especially better outside. The numbers for Goff, the Lions QB playing outside are dismal this year.

Jared Goff in a dome: 104.0 rating, 69% completions, 7.9 yds per pass, 23 TD-8 INT; Jared Goff outdoors: 87.9 rating, 64.5%, 7.0 yds per pass, 7 TD, 4 INT Jared Goff on grass: 82.0 rating, 63.6% completion, 6.5 yds per pass, 5 TD, 4 INT

The Lions are a team with a future, but the 49ers are a team for today. The are back in the NFC championship for the second year in a row, this time with their QB. They have the best runner in football with McCafferty, and they are playing at home. San Fran -7 and over 52 and take the over passing yards for both QBs- 256 for Goff and 276.5 for Purdy.

We would like to see the Lions win; we just do not think they will.

Have fun and bet it all...you can always make more money.

Uhho. Be I unlocked the anger of the legendary army of swifties?

You can hide neath your covers and study your pain.
Make crosses from your lovers and throw roses in the rain.

Those are lines from a real genius song writer. Not some bubble gum chewing teen idol. Go away.

Up until a few weeks ago, I thought Taylor Swift was a new cheese put out by Kraft Foods.

Oh Rumpole, you think you are so clever quoting Bruce Springsteen.

You wrote-- Not some bubble gum chewing teen idol.

Umm, have you seen the positive impact Miss Taylor Swift has had on the economy? There's a reason why she is number 1.

She is a genius at her song writing. Do not dismiss her talent without getting to know her music. She isnt just some bubble gum chewing teen idol. She is a force to be reckoned with and a genius at what she does. Even director Christoper Nolan had to push back the release date on his brilliant film Oppenheimer" because he knew his film would not be able to compete with box office numbers against her Eras Tour Film release. I suggest you read about how brilliant her patents are in mareketing and releasing the film and securing a mega million dollar deal with AMC without the help or backing of any studio head in Hollywood. Dont be fast to dismiss her or her music, or the impact she has. The fact that you think she's some "some bubble gum chewing teen idol"speaks volumes about how judemental you are. You may not like her music and that is your choice, but dont be too quick to dismiss what a powerful force she is. And, her music is meaningful, take a minute and educate yourself.

We are never ever ever getting back together. What’s wrong with bubblegum?

Yo Rump, hows this for lyrics--

"You're talking shit for the hell of it
Addicted to betrayal, but you're relevant
You're terrified to look down
'Cause if you dare, you'll see the glare
Of everyone you burned just to get there
It's coming back around..."
Karma- T. Swift

This song resonates with anyone who has been hurt/betrayed by someone.

Rumpole, trust me-- you DO NOT want to be on the opposite side of any Taylor Swift fan but damn you opened up Pandora's box by talking smack about her on your blog.

True fact--Upset Swifties who struggled to get tickets to Taylor’s latest Eras tour prompted a lawsuit and several federal investigations into Ticketmaster. Music exec Scooter Braun claimed his family received “numerous death threats” in 2019 after Taylor asked her fans to let him “know how you feel” about him allegedly blocking her from performing her own music. And a “negative” review of folklore prompted some Swifties to dox a Pitchfork journalist.

"We can quote from Blackstone, but we cannot tell you one song Ms. Swift has sung. Nor do we ever care to know."

Nobody is saying you or anyone else have to care one whit about Taylor Swift. Maybe she will be entirely forgotten within a decade. Then again, she has remained famous for about 15 years now, which is pretty good staying power in the music industry. So she's not just another one year pop star. The career of most NFL players lasts only about 3.3 years and most of them end up broke and forgotten shortly afterward. And more than a few end up having their second run in the criminal justice system on top of getting CTE.

You sneer at the adulation paid to insipid pop stars. Fair enough. I've never understood all the reverence for sports. So many people of the elder generations talk about some decades old pass or run like it was a religious experience that gave their lives meaning. People still get teary-eyed remembering some touchdown O.J. made in the 70's.

If you're tired of all this Taylor Swift saturation, go complain to the NFL. They are the ones responsible for this state of affairs. The NFL is a business out to make money and it makes more money when more people watch their games. The NFL doesn't care if the ratings come from genuine longtime loyal sports fans or shallow teenyboppers hungry for Taylor Swift reaction shots.

Maybe you could also blame Travis Kelce? Although he denies having any plans to retire, he may be planning a future beyond football. He got good reviews for hosting Saturday Night Live, so maybe he has ambitions for show business? Pairing up with a celebrity would certainly help him in that regard. Whether or not the relationship is a sham, Mr. Kelce would seem to have more to gain than Ms. Swift.

You nailed it on the head @1134- the NFL is a business and Taylor Swift love or hate her is bringing in the $$$ and the ratings are proving it. And the end of the day all the head honchos care about is money, money, money. The cameras at the game are panning to her for a reason. Companies are loving it, she wears a certain branded sweater, it sells out the next day. She wears a coat, a piece of jewelery, companies are loving the free endorsements and money they are making from their products selling out. It's a whole different era. Look at the ads that run during the Superbowl, and the cost of one ad airing, how many millions companies are willing to pay for a spot. Anyone old enough to remember when halftime shows consisted of a marching band? Now the SB is about the ads and who will be performing.

The Superbowl stopped being about football ages ago. It has become an exhibition for expensive commercials with an incidental football game in the background. While Superbowl commercials from years ago live on in perpetuity on YouTube, hardly anybody remembers who played or scored at the Superbowl 5 or 10 years ago.
