TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT

Last night was the night as the NY Knicks embarrassed the Miami Heat at home, beating them 112-92, and we were there to enjoy every moment of it.

And tonight is the night for the famed PD party. (By invitation only.) Have fun.

Meanwhile, we've been following the extraordinary blog of US software mogul John Mcafee, who has been blogging while on the run from a murder investigation in Belize, which has great diving by the way. Mcafee was arrested in Guatemala Thursday, and became perhaps the first prisoner to blog from jail.   We now know that the coffee served by corrections in Guatemala is "excellent."

Many loyal readers have often opined that perhaps it would be nice if we blogged from jail- where they say we belong- but we were happy to cede that honour to another.

Speaking of things we've been accused of, Roy Black advises to "cross examine like a psychopath."
From his blog:
The key traits to psychopathic success are: ruthlessness; intense capacity to focus, excluding all distractions such as fear; powerful reward motivation; a disposition to action; acute ability to read emotions in other people, without being moved by them; charisma; mental resilience; and mindfulness, the ability to live in the present moment. Include in that “the refrigerated heart of a ruthless, glacial predator.” Sounds a lot like a trial lawyer conducting a cross-examination.

Sound like anyone you know?

Have another drink on us tonight. Who won the movie tickets?

Enjoy the weekend.

THE CAPTAIN ENQUIRES:

PEARL HARBOUR DAY, HORACE .....

Rump, nothing about December 7, 1941 and the 71st Anniversary of Pearl Harbour Day?

Query, any truth that:

1. If Wallace had beaten out Truman for VEEP in 1944, the "bomb" never would have been used on Japan?

2. Japan was a beaten army and ready to surrender several weeks before we bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

3. The only reason Truman used the bomb was not to get the Japs to surrender but to show Russia what we had developed as a weapon?

4. Truman was famous for saying that the reason he dropped the bombs was that it shortened the war and saved hundreds of thousands of American lives. Is it true that after he left office in 1953 and many times in interviews between then and his death in 72, the number of "American lives saved" grew from hundreds of thousands to a number in the millions?

Rump, your input is always greatly appreciated.

Happy Pearl Harbour Day.

The more intereting thing about this week in WWII history is that DEC 5-6, 1941 marked the farthest advance of the German army for its invasion of Russia. Elements of the army reached the outskirts of Moscow but then it really started to snow. The Russians counter attacked on the 6th and until December 1945 -the battle of the bulge , German army never went on the attack again.

For those who have not been to Hirsoshima, Japan, I recommend going.

It is very solemn. And it will certainly affect the way your view the bomb.

Really, Pearl Harbor has been done and done and done. Although, reading the Churchill biography lends a different perspective to the events in the Pacific. On the evenings of Decemeber 6 and 7, Chruchill, at his country estate was very morose. Through ULTRA intercepts, he knew that the Japanese Navy had set sail. But nobody knew where they were going. Singapore seemed the obvious target, and Churchill, who was struggling to arm Russia and replenish the British Army, knew he could not defend Singapore nor fight Germany AND Japan alone, and he had little hope of the US declaring war on Japan if his bases in Singapore were attacked. Then the news of the Japanese attack started to filter in and when he realized the scope of the attack and spoke to Roosevelt- who told him the US was obviously entering the war- Churchill wrote in his diary the next night that he slept deeply and peacefully for the first time in weeks. His prayers had been answered. The UK was no longer fighting alone.

"Japan was a beaten army and ready to surrender several weeks before we bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki?"

"The only reason Truman used the bomb was not to get the Japs to surrender but to show Russia what we had developed as a weapon?"

Nonsense - Japan was ready to sacrifice its civilian population in last-ditch battles on their sacred soil before unconditionally surrendering. Hell, after the two bombs were dropped elements of the army tried to take over the Imperial Palace to prevent surrender.

An invasion of Japan would have produced American casualties in the hundreds of thousands, conservatively. Would you like to be the President and explain to America why you decided to forego the use of super weapons and force Japan's surrender and instead chose to sacrifice those GI lives?

After your impeachment, you might escape a public execution if you were lucky.

The "captain" has been busy watching that crap Oliver Stone version of things that took place before he was born.

Stop drinking the Kool-Aid.

The bombs helped the Emperor decide to sue for peace. It did save American lives. Not all history is a conspiracy.

Is that the same Olover Stone who made JFK? The stirring speech by Kostner was complete fiction, as the D.A. left town before the end of the trial.

2:59- you know nothing about this. The conservative estimates of an invasion of Japan were 250,000 us casualties. Japan was defeated in the sense of not being able to win, but one need only look at the terrible battle at Okinawa to see how the Japanese intended to fight for their home islands. The use of two atomic bombs (which also disproves your contention that the bomb needed to be used to show its power) was necessary to force a surrender and for no other reason. This is not even a realistic point to debate.

Any person who knows anything about the battle in the Pacific knows that the Japanese fought Kamakazi style. Death was not something they were scared of. At least the troops. So an invasion, although we would have ultimately won, would have lead to over a million casualties for the U.S. in all of WWII. The A-Bomb provided Truman an opportunity to finally end the war and he took it.

Rumpole, I think you meant 11:50, not 2:59, when you wrote "you know nothing about this".
You agreed with what 2:59 wrote.

Rumpole, you mentioned the Churchill biography. Which specifically and would you recommend it?

Read the blog. I've mentioned it several times. The third of Manchester's three volumes: Defender of the Realm. Just released. with a co-author because Manchester developed Alzheimer's during his research and writing and subsequently passed away.
