ELECTION DAY 2010

UPDATE: Long time ASA Howard Pohl has resigned. It was an amicable resignation reportedly for personal and not professional reasons. Howard leaves a long legacy as a superb prosecutor. His skill, wisdom, guidance, humor and experience is a loss the SAO can ill afford. We wish him well.

Good Tuesday Morning! It's election day. Honor the men and women who have fought for your right to vote and tell that judge you will be back in a few hours because you're going to vote.

We went 5-0 on our NFL picks, winning our final MNF IF bet. The totals later.

We want to recognize two REGJB regulars who are on the ballot today:

Lisa Lesperance for the State legislature. She has the endorsement and backing of the State Democratic party. GO LISA!

And Rod Vereen for Congress. He is running as an independent which might just be the right move in 2010. GO ROD!

Stay tuned tonight for your most complete local blog coverage of the national elections.

Coming soon: Halloween is over, but not for Judges Brown and Soto. Their worst nightmare is about to come true. COURT REPORTERS ON STRIKE. Low pay and general disrespect force local court reporters into a one day strike to let judges and lawyers see just how important they are.

(Here's a preview of our soon to be award winning blog post)

Court Reporters of Miami unite! You have nothing to lose but your low per page rates.....

Only on your favourite REGJB Blog.

Now go vote for Lisa and Rod.

Has a long time chief ASA resigned? We're hot on the rumour.....

Lisa will lose against Bileca, a complete tool, I spoke with him for an hour, the guy is a Republican slogan machine, but this is what wins in this race....

Why aren't you pitching Gelber, have you fallen in love with Bondi's blond hair?

Now that Bloom is gone, who is considered the best County Court Judge at REG, who is the model judge that new judges should learn from? If you were in charge, who would you send a new judge in to learn from?

Court Reporters and Court Interpreters should join and put on a united strike/sick days out. Everybody wants them, some judges even throw tantrums at them and think they are just another piece of furniture in the courtroom or their personal staff, but nobody wants to pay for them or care about lousy pay and working conditions.

I can't believe I'm saying this given how different our politics are, but I support Vereen (and not just because he's a better choice than Wilson).

When I was a prosecutor, I had a couple of cases against Vereen and saw him in action many times. He was always honest, ethical and professional. So, while I disagree with many of his positions, I support him. We need more honest people in Congress who are willing to work with others. Bipartisanship is a good thing (we are, after all, a democracy that depends on appropriate compromise) and I'm convinced based on my experiences that Vereen will consider all sides and do what he believes is the right thing each and every time.

Court reporters going on strike is like a bank teller or toll booth operator going on strike. Stay out long enough and you'll be replaced by a machine. Just like in county court.

I'm all for court reporters, but c'mon, it's 2010 already. Do it digitally. I mean when was the last time you needed a transcript of a morning calendar? Trials and evidentiary hearings are different.

Rump you forgot ASA Carlos Trujillo running for State Rep. He WILL win. Lisa hopefully NOT.

Think you need to dig a little deeper into the Pohl "resignation."

Court Reporters -- we all know how much work we process and the effort required for its perfection. Ultimately, we are processing peoples' lives and Miami-Dade is much busier than other jurisdictions.

If you have any doubts, try to locate a copy of a transcript that's over five years old. Agencies want a warm body and have little idea what's involved to produce a speedy and accurate transcript of proceedings.

If you still have doubts, visit a judge sitting in criminal who you haven't seen in a few months and you will see how much we all age so quickly.

The courtrooms are so loud that I think I'm at happy hour but everyone else is happy but me.

I love my job and I love the fact that my job is important to the administration of justice and that we all are participating in a constitutitionally-mandated process.

If anyone thinks they can produce a better and faster transcript from a neighbor lady down the street who is working out of her garage without certifications producing a transcript without line numbers making it impossible to impeach a witness, hey, knock yourself out.

The NY Jets have picked up Pohl on waivers....

You may notice I have not published a comment. if you think about it, the comment was about a person's personal life that had no bearing on anything else. For that reason, although I know you comment to be correct, I shall not publish it.

now that the Extreme Right has regained its "rigthful" possition, they will sure the ills that affect us all; proposing a constitutional amendment requiring indenture servitude for judges, pubic defenders, persecutors, court repeaters and clerks, ah - - - - indeed, this will balance the budget! See us Repulsives do have a solution you Demogogs do not!!!! Ah yes - - the next we force the PBA to pay for meals and parking, and appoint Billy Altfield as "Consiglieri" to Big John Rivera.
