WE INTERRUPT THIS BLOG

For a message from the brain of President Bush:
"They say I have to go to California. It's an awful long flight. I hope they have cartoons."

"Lookit that house on fire!!! These Californiaiansians...these Californiaasss...uhh these people who live here sure do weird stuff for fun."

"So I said Condoleeza, you tell them damn arabs I will bomb them back into the stone age. And then they didn't listen to me....so I did.

Is this a bad time? A few years ago we coulda blamed this on Saddam. But how about you and me go on TV and we blame the damned Democrats for this mess? I been tellin them bout globe getting hotter and they keep yellin at me about oil companies ....as if that had anything to do with this."

Rumpole says: Why does this matter? Because this idiot is in charge. He was warned and all he did was smirk:

BUSH'S STATEMENT ON GLOBAL WARMING IN 2002

(CBS) President Bush dismissed on Tuesday a report put out by his administration warning that human activities are behind climate change that is having significant effects on the environment. The report released by the Environmental Protection Agency was a surprising endorsement of what many scientists and weather experts have long argued — that human activities such as oil refining, power plants and automobile emissions are important causes of global warming. But it suggests nothing beyond voluntary action by industry for dealing with the so-called "greenhouse" gases, the program Bush advocated in rejecting a treaty negotiated in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997 calling for mandatory reduction of those gases by industrial nations.

"I read the report put out by the bureaucracy," Mr. Bush said dismissively when asked about the EPA report, adding that he still opposes the Kyoto treaty.

Rumpole your comments on Tate were quite possibly the dumbest you have ever made. kid kills child brutally. he gets a second chance that many far more deserving inmates would never get becuase of publicity and what did he do with it? goes out and commmits a armed robbery with a gun. why should he not be locked up.

i know bad upbringing blah blah blah but lionel is clearly broken, dangersou and do you really think more probation and counseling is going to fix this monster?

Maybe Bush actually committed the arson that started the fires.

THE CAPTAIN REPORTS:

Sorry Horace, but to imply, suggest, or outright state in any way that global warming was the cause of the fires around San Diego, is preposterous.

Some FACTS:

- In Orange County, where the authorities have already determined that a large fire north of Mission Viejo was intentionally set ...

- A separate fire, to the east in Riverside County, was also found to be intentional ...

- Early indications point to downed power lines as the culprit in a fire in Malibu and possibly two others ...

- Two other features of California — its border with Mexico and the proclivity of its residents to live along remote canyons and hilltops — contribute to the excessive fire danger ...

- Illegal immigrants who have crossed the border where some of the fiercest fires have raged this week often start campfires that get out of control ...

- And fire travels faster and with more vigor uphill, making those pathways extremely flammable ...

- Winds, high temperatures and extreme drought contributed to the severity of the current fires ...

These fires have been going on for years in that area of the country. There are many factors that contribute to them. Global warming may, I repeat, may have some casual connection to the fires.

(but I do love the pic of Bush)!

No, 6:55 my comments were not dumb. This child, at age 14 engaged in rough play that tragically killed a younger child. He was a child, and as all modern and advanced countries know, a child's brain is still forming at age 14. Children at that age cannot understand all the consequences of their actions. So what did we do here in Florida? We threw this kid in prison, and told him he would never get out. Can you imagine the terror of that child in a prison at age 14? And now you wonder why he is the mal-adjusted teenager that he now is? WE DID IT TO HIM. So-assuming he's guilty- he acts out what he knows best. We put him in a prison. We didn't get him treatment. We didn't put him in a calm and nuturing enviroment. We put him in a prison with criminals. So, he now acts out, and what do we do? We throw up our hands and say "he's dangerous. He'll never learn" (You even say he's broken. Of course he is. WE BROKE HIM) and we throw his ass in prison for 30 f-ing years.

Shame on all of us. Shame on this society that does that to children.

Ahh....Mon Capitan. Just how many of these fires existed in the 30's?40's? ect. Just go to the 60 Minutes web site and look at the report just less than a month ago on super firestorms. Yes, fires have always been around. But not like these fires. And as the report states, when the fires in the past struck, the enviroment had enough moisture to bring the forrest back. Because of global warming, what returns is an arrid desert land, not the original forest. And I hold this idiot directly responsible for playing his Texas fiddle while the earth burns.

Rump, if I get your last comment at 843 pm right, you blame Bush for rejecting the Kyoto protocol - even though the Senate voted UNANIMOUSLY that it would not pass Kyoto back in '98 or '99, and your hero Bill Clinton never bothered to send it to Congress because he knew it was a death sentence for our economy (not to mention it didn't cover China and India, the biggest polluters around).

So you think if Bush had somehow beat up the Senate to pass the damn thing, we'd be in Nirvana now - no fires, etc. Despite the fact of multiple arsons.

Gimme a f****ng break!

Lawyers are supposed to have some contact with reason.

You'd accomplish more pushing string up Mt. Everest, than pushing Kyota.

BTW, whatever happened to algore's superhurricanes these last two years?....

Rumpole said...

Let me make this perfectly clear- Bush knew. He was told. THE EARTH IS WARMING. He did nothing because it was politically better for him to mock Al Gore. Now we have the worst crisis of our lives pending. You don't think anything is happening? Atlanta has 7 months of drinking water left- and this is the dry season. We have had more cat 5 hurricanes from 2000-2007 then from 1900-2000. Type "shrinking ice cap" in Google and see what is surprising scientists every day.

And what does Bush do? His henchmen censor government scientists who report on Global warming, and he sneers at the EPA report in 2002.

This jackass played solider while the earth burned. He should be held accountable.

Rump, the Bush CENSORED scientist (who's had 1400 press conferences, availabilities, etc., in the past 5 years), NASA's Mr. Hansen, turned out to be wrong - NASA had to correct its temperature data a couple months ago to show that 1997 - 2005 WAS NOT the hottest period of the last hundred years.

And where do you get your Cat 5 hurricane data??? GIve me a cite, because you're out of your mind. More Cat 5's in the last 7 years than the previous century - BTW, before we had weather satellites (1970's) to track the Cat 5's in the Atlantic that nobody ever saw??!!

Rump, you got a serious problem if you think W all by himself can reverse global warming - if it exists, since the new term for libs isn't "global warming" but "climate change."

Talk about hedging bets. Sunday football bets should be so lenient.

Rumpole said...

As far as I can remember- EVERY hurricane in the Caribbean that hit Mexico this year was a Cat 5. Ask New Orleans about Cat 5- and there was at least one other that year that I can remember. Just Google "frequency of category 5 hurricanes" and you will see the stats.

No- I don't hold poor little Georgie responsible for not fixing global warming. It's enough for him to eat a pretzel without an ER team standing by to rescue him.

My point is- not only did he do nothing- he mocked global warming and actively subverted the government scientists and reports. The NASA scientist was not the only one. The White House engaged in a systemic attempt to muzzle all government scientists who wanted to issue papers with conclusions that the White House objected to.

Can Bush cure global warming. Nope- he needs help to brush his teeth. Can the US? You'd better hope so, because otherwise we as a species are screwed. And what I hold Bush responsible for is wasting our resources on a war based on lies, when the real threat to our children and their children is the harm we have done to the enviroment. We could have used that half a trillion dollars for research on absorbing co2, and safer nuclear power, and a new type of fuel for cars. Instead we wasted it on military contractors in Iraq. So Haliburton got wealthy. The kids of the CEO of Haliburton, and their kids, are going to have to live in the same wrecked world as the rest of us.

Google "oceans absorb CO2" and read the new report that the oceans which used to absorb half the co2 are now full, and cannot do it any more- and read what that report says are the consequences. Thats what US scientists and US corporations should be working on. Not building a blast proof green zone in Iraq.

If you want to engage in an intelligent conversation then first address two points:

1) is there a problem?
2) has Bush done a damn thing to address the problem? If not, why not? (OK 3 points).

Rump,

If if understand you there has been a 1400% increase in Cat 5 hurricanes since 2000 (you say: more Cat 5's in 7 years than in the previous 100 years).

WOW. That's so delusional it's not worth comment.

BTW, if you were referring to Katrina as a Cat 5, you're wrong - it wasn't close - Cat 2, almost a Cat 3 at some point. Katrina didn't kill New Orleans - years of corruption - under Democrat administration - in (non)building and (non)maintaining the levees did.

The LA citizens know that, that's why they just elected Republican Bobby Jindal to be their governor.

Can't We All Just Get Along?
Now might be a good time to bring up the sheriff’s deputy who snatched my cell phone, in mid-use, right out of my hand. That was his way of ending an interview I was doing with a man on a street that this deputy thought had gone on too long. Because we were transmitting that phone interview live, as a report during our noon newscast, the last thing viewers heard was my voice yelling “Hey, what are you doing!” Click.

Back in the studio, the anchors explained to viewers that somehow the cell connection was lost. Back out on Pembroke Road, I was dogging the deputy up the street to get his name for some future action. The incident is all on videotape, as happens when news photographers are present.

That deputy's action was not law enforcement. It was bully behavior.

And in the bigger picture, this guy with a badge, a gun and the power of the law had just trashed the First Amendment.

Later that day, a spokesman for the Broward Sheriff’s Office graciously apologized for the deputy’s behavior (though the offender never did). I tried to be equally gracious, and chalked up his behavior to an emotional reaction in the hours after a colleague had been shot.

End of story.

Except it’s not the end.

That incident was part of a continuum of law enforcement officers acting on some preconceived notion that news reporters are public enemy number one. And I bring it up now because of what happened Tuesday afternoon.

A school police officer arrested my colleague Jeff Weinsier, because Jeff did not move from a sidewalk in front of a high school. This would have been a perfectly acceptable command, had the sidewalk been part of a police action, had the officer also ordered away the dozens of people on the sidewalk with him. But he didn’t. More officers showed up, and when Jeff stood his ground, they cuffed him, then charged him with trespassing (on a sidewalk?), with resisting arrest (by asserting his right to be on a public street?).

Jeff was carrying a revolver, for which he has a permit, and showed that permit to the officers. Not that those officers even knew he had the gun when they arrested him. And not that it legally matters.

Been there, done that (minus the arrest). Different school, different police officer, same command to get off a public sidewalk, move here, stay there.
Crash course in freedom of the press: as the “voice of the public”, news crews are permitted to be anywhere the public is permitted.

When was the last time someone told you to leave a sidewalk in front of a school?

Allowing for two sides (and typically more) to every story, I make no judgments about Jeff's arrest. The facts will come out in due time. The chances of that happening are good, because this incident, too, was videotaped - by news photographer Frank Debesa. Unblinking, unedited videotape provides an unvarnished, indisputable picture like no verbal account ever can. Without emotion or agenda.

Still photographs, as snapshots of moments, may also help. A freelance journalist named Carlos Miller is currently using his photos in his own legal fight. Earlier this year, in the course of shooting pictures for a story along Biscayne Boulevard, he managed to shoot a few frames while police officers arrested him. They had told him to go away. He didn't. His photos show his arrest on a public sidewalk.

Why do they do it? Because they can? To show they’re in charge?

Badge on the chest, gun belt around the waist and chip on the shoulder?

Every reporter I know – EVERY one – has a deep respect for the law and the people who enforce it. Many count among them good friends and collegial professional relationships. No reporter I know would do anything to compromise an investigation or the safety of an officer or the public. News organizations that employ me have gone out of the way to assist officers and departments when asked.

So why this inherent contentious, combative demeanor? Aren’t we all on the same side?? Serving the people?

From 1962 to 2002 there were 10 cat 5's. From 2003 until today there have been 8 cat 5's. It's surprising.

I think the two main reasons are: increased hurricane cycle combined with improved observations.

I may be wrong on the observations though. Wasn't there a hayday in recon flights when they first figured out how to do it?

SUMMARY OF 2005 ATLANTIC TROPICAL CYCLONE ACTIVITY AND VERIFICATION OF AUTHOR’S SEASONAL AND MONTHLY FORECASTS
http://hurricane.atmos.colostate.edu/forecasts/2005/nov2005/

Excerpts:

The 2005 hurricane season was the most active and destructive season
on record, and therefore had many unique characteristics.

Seasonal Characteristics/Records

“ 23 named storms formed during the 2005 season. This is the most
named storms in a single season, breaking the old record of 21 named
storms set in 1933. However, there was no satellite coverage during
1933, and therefore it is quite possible that there may have been one
or more storms that were missed during the 1933 season.”

“ 13 hurricanes formed during the 2005 season. This is the most
hurricanes in a single season, breaking the old record of 12
hurricanes set in 1969.”

“7 intense or major (Category 3-4-5) hurricanes formed during the 2005 season. This ties the single-season record for intense hurricanes set
in 1950.”

“103.25 named storm days were recorded during the 2005 season. This is the second most named storm days in a single season, trailing only the 1995 season (120.5 named storm days).”

“16.75 intense hurricane days were recorded during the 2005 season.
This ties 2005 with the 2003 season for the third most intense
hurricane days observed since 1950.”

“The season accumulated 249 NTC units. This breaks the record of 230 NTC units which was set in 1950.”

“Three Category 5 hurricanes formed during the 2005 season (Katrina, Rita, and Wilma). This is the most Category 5 hurricanes recorded in a single season, breaking the old record of two Category 5 hurricanes
set in 1960 and 1961. Also, when the 2004-2005 seasons are combined,
four Category 5 hurricanes have formed (Ivan, Katrina, Rita and
Wilma). This ties the consecutive-year record set in 1960-1961 when
four Category 5 hurricanes also formed.”

“Seven named storms made United States landfall during 2005 (Arlene,
Cindy, Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Tammy and Wilma). This puts the 2005 season in a tie for second place for landfalling storms behind the 1916 and 2004 seasons where eight named storms made landfall.”

“The 2005 season was the most damaging in history for United States landfalling storms, largely due to Hurricane Katrina. Insured damage estimates for the 2005 season are nearly $70 billion dollars, which
shatters the old records set in 1992 and 2004, which when adjusted for inflation, were each approximately $25 billion dollars in insured

Isn't that channel 10 reporter the same guy who embarassed police officers for parking violations in and around the Justice Building.
The reports he aired were of arrogant and abusive and lying police officers flaunting the law and then reacting when they got caught. The felt they were above the law and when confronted lied and dodged as if they were entitled by their badge to do what the average citizen could never get away with. This reporters biggest mistake was to catch and confront the PBA president, that Jimmy Hoffa like thug, John Rivera with illegal parking and tints on his his windows. Sounds trivial right, but never under estimate the "LONG ARM OF KARMA"
I haven't seen the video of the arrest but I will bet that that they recognized this reporter and got pay back.

Pass this on to the reporter who lost their cell phone. Our clients, especially the poor or minorities are arrrested for blocking the sidewalk ALL THE TIME. All thats required in the aform was that the Defendant was blocking the sidewalk by being on it and others had to walk around the sidewalk to use it. As if in this dimention { as opposed to the other 10 if you follow String Theory } anyone using the sidewalk would have to walk around another person, since you cannt walk through a person, even if they are using the sidewalk to walk on. By the laws of physics every person who uses a sidewalk to walk on requires any other person to walk around them But this does stop arrests everyday for Blocking the Sidewalk. Maybe Mr/Ms reporter you understand the blight of poor guys/girls of being harrassed by the cops and charged w/ a B.S. misdomeanor/ordinence violation.

I'm getting attacked on two fronts here. No problem for an able and skillful blogger.

1) Re: Bush- he cannot control the enviroment. He fiddled while the Earth burned. He did nothing to help control the emissions that affected the weather. AND he was warned. That is his crime.

2) Children cannot form intent to kill such that we punish them as adults. This child obviously needed help, control, and close monitoring. To me, all life is precious. Yes, tragically he took a life. But to take his life away from him by sentencing him to life in prison was more of a crime- because we as a society know better- then his act which killed that young girl.

My point is, in 2007 we can try to intellectually understand and treat a child that does a horrible act, or we can throw up our hands and toss him in a living hell for the next 70 years. I choose the former. The lord should help those who choose the latter.

Dear Mr. Rumpole: Your comments regarding the President are uncalled for and inappropriate. If the U.S. did not consume as much energy and fossil fuels as we do and engage in military exercises in foreign lands an average of every few years than where would our economy and standard of living be. 500 billion dollars a year is spent on the military industrial complex, companies such as McDonnel Douglas, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Halliburton, Bechtl, Kellogg Brown and Root and the computer industry. If the auto industry were to go into a depression it would affect an estimated 10% of the economy so production and use of fuel efficient autos is out of the question. What do you want to do with the 2.5 trillion dollar annual budget- build affordable housing for those who do not work and pay taxes, help veterans and the homeless, protect the borders from illegal immigrants and drug importation, improve after school and anti-poverty programs to cut down on school violance and gun violence and gangs. 9:31,

Instead of composing a cute multiple-choice bashing of Ms. Clinton (whom I do not generally support), why not look at the substance of the comments instead of their source?

Let's see...

"Take things away for the common good."

I suppose you are unwilling to pay taxes for any governmental purpose, even the nation's defense? Or are you a Repub who simply wants to see the government totally dismantled as dreamed of by your hero Ronald Reagan?

"End of gov't by the few..etc."

You prefer lobbyist-run government, limited suffrage, oligarchies and all those things that will continue the fall into fascism? Isn't "shared responsibility for shared prosperity" what helped win WWII?

"Take things away from some"

See above.

"Give a little bit of their own"

You're starting to bore the jury....

"Failure of free market"

That's the free market that gets us the leaded paint on our kids' toys, right? The one that is enabled by political appointments of industry flacks to regulatory positions. (That's the free market that kills coal miners too...who needs em!) Cool. Gotta love those free markets.

Number 6 is so lacking in context, why bother.

It'll always be about smug, superficial, manufactured, out-of-context, manipulative, selfish fear to you and your ilk, won't it?

Sorry, but your fascist neocon misogynistic cretinism is showing. (I could have just said "republican," but the long definition was so much more fun to type.)

While I do NOT want this blog to become embroiled in an abortion rights issue, it is true I do believe all life is precious.

As for the "common good" argument- we are not entering the Objectivist Philosophy and the argument against forced altruism. I am against Altruism as a political philosphy, because the reader is correct: every major oppressive facist regime was formed in the name of the common good. I am a avowed individualist. I do not believe anyone for any reason has the right to make me sacrifice myself for someone else.

That being said, I also study and find great comfort in the Buddhist teachings of helping others, as well as the Jewish teaching of miztvahs, and the Christian teachings of helping others. The difference is profound: Anything I voluntarily decide to do which helps someone else- makes me feel better and I believe it is the right thing to do. But that does not mean that I take the next step and believe that because I think it is the right thing to do, that means I may force my neighbor to do it. That is wrong, and always will be.

So there it is: Your faithful blogger: a man of seeming contradictions.

This debate reminds me of the decades-long effort by Big Tobacco to create questions and issues regarding the link between smoking and cancer. Sure there's a link -- but is it causal? At this point it's only corollative.

We need more research! The jury is still out!

Who do you believe -- me or your lying eyes?
