QUERY

This pretty much consumed most of one of our talk-radio shows yesterday. Surprisingly, it was a sports talk show. Our days involve more than reading Le Monde, the Wall Street Journal, and crafting cross examination questions.

Query: does a straw have one hole or two?

As our fav jurist Judge Moreno was wont to ask, "what say you?"

A straw

  1. A straw has two holes and a hot dog is not a sandwich.

  2. Meat between two pieces of bread. Mustard. Or ketchup. Sounds like a sandwich to me.

  3. Consider a person tasked to make straws from a cylinder with both ends closed. Think of an elongated can. The only way to make straws from this closed-end cylinder is to open two holes - one at each end. Otherwise, this random straw example would not suck, and would not be a straw. It follows that there are two holes in the straw. The real question is: can a hole terminate in a hole?
