JUDGE HENDON HAS PASSED AWAY

This is breaking news that we learned of this morning (Tuesday). We will update as we receive more information. This is both unexpected and terribly sad. Judge Hendon was amongst the best we in Miami-Dade had for the bench. His most recent appointment was the Third DCA.

Subject: Passing of the Honorable Eric William Hendon

Dear Court Family:

With a great sense of loss, I share with you that our colleague and brother, the Honorable Eric William Hendon, died last night at Baptist Hospital. He passed in comfort and love surrounded by his wife, Diane Kennedy Hendon, his son, Lt. Col. James Hendon, and his brother, Dr. Marvin Hendon.

Judge Hendon brought to this court decades of experience as a trial lawyer, appellate advocate, and trial judge, as well as kindness, humor, and good fellowship. He relished his work as an appellate judge and spoke with pride and appreciation of the talent and effort of all the members of the court family.

Judge Hendon lived a great life, overcoming much and achieving much. He was something of a child prodigy in music and education. He loved classical music, expensive cars, and traveling to virtually every corner of the world with his wife, Diane. His presence will be sorely missed. Please join me in keeping him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Thomas Logue,

Chief Judge, Third District Court of Appeal of Florida,

Two great jurists--Judge Person and now Judge Hendon--in such a short time. I am heartbroken for his family. A good and decent man, and a wonderful judge. He will be missed.

Sad to see he passed. Such a kind man! He was a pleasure to appear in front of and treated everyone with respect and a smile on his face.

This is heartbreaking. Judge Hendon was such a great man and has long been an inspiration for me. As I mentioned to his wife Diane a few years ago at my investiture, Judge Hendon and Diane have a special presence. Whenever I have interacted with them over the past decade, and regardless of the topic of conversation, I have left the conversation with the sense that everything will be okay. Diane, we are praying for you, your son, and your entire family during this terrible time.

Judge Hendon will be sorely missed. He was fair to both sides, kind albeit formal in court, he followed the law, and he loved being a judge. Sending heartfelt condolences to his family, his court family, and friends.

I am so saddened by this news. I thought back on all the wonderful moments that I appeared in front of him with a smile. He was an absolute pleasure to be in front of. He was always so poised, classy and professional. I had an opportunity to be in trial in front of him and it was a great experience. Every time I interacted with him and his wife at social events there was always a nice conversation to be had. He was an amazing person and a great judge. May he rest in peace. Another good one leaves too soon. Prayers for his family during this difficult time.

Did my first trial in front of him. He was professional, intelligent, and very patient with me as a new attorney. He gave my client a fair shake and possessed the traits any lawyer or citizen of Miami-Dade could hope to find in a judge. A great loss for not only the legal community but for the every resident of Miami-Dade.

I am so sorry to hear of Judge Hendon's passing. I dealt with him many times in the 1980's when he was a defense attorney and I was an ASA. He was always polite, professional, soft-spoken and kind, in addition to being an excellent lawyer. He was, in short, the kind of person you wanted to become a judge. My condolences to his family.

I am so sorry to hear of Judge Herndon's passing. I tried a week long case before him on a hotly contested civil matter. He ruled promptly and displayed a great sense of humor during a portion of the trial. He was one of the few bright lights on the Miami judicial bench. He will be greatly missed and all who crossed his path are sadden beyond description.

I appeared before him when he was new on the bench and I was a new lawyer. His kindness and patience helped me and people in my situation to be less terrified.

I was so sorry to learn of Judge Hendon's passing. He was truly a "gentle" giant and he embodied the "gentle" in "gentle"man. He detested having to campaign because he was not comfortable the whole meet and greet campaigning that was required. Oftentimes, he would attend a function and he could be found sitting at a table near the entrance. He loved talking about his pride and joy, his son. We conversed many times about travel. He and Diane loved to cruise as much as I do and they were fortunate enough to travel the world.

Eric was a true asset on the bench and he will be missed.
