WE NEVER IMAGINED

It's cold today in Miami. So there is plenty of time to stay inside and read your favourite blogs. First head over to DOM's blog and check out the short but important guest blog post by Michael Caruso.

Second, read Martin Niemoller's powerful poem, the famous lines of which are these:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

If you visit the battlefields of Europe and Asia like we have, you would have never thought you would live in an America in which 35% of the voting population worships the nonsensical thoughts of a totalitarian idiot. An idiot who admires dictators and who lives for playing people and races and cultures off of each other. An idiot who became president in one of history's most tragic accidents, and who as president called White Supremacists good people.  Walk the cemetery in Normandy where 9,387 American boys and men lie buried. Most died before they were 21 and all of them gave their lives fighting against White Supremacists. And yet, we had a president who pandered to racists because he was one.

We live in a country in which 35-40% of people would quickly agree to abolish the First Amendment; would vote to confirm this country as a Christian country; would gleefully agree to the public execution of journalists who report unpopular stories; who believe a cabal of wealthy individuals and government scientists are lying about Covid for their own personal gain; and who can be whipped into a frenzy against simple pandemic solutions like masks and vaccines. Never mind that almost every one of these people came into being in a hospital where doctors and nurses wore masks and where they were given vaccines as children before Fox News existed.  Never mind that although these people claim to reject the Covid vaccine because of their own research, were they to need an appendectomy, they would gladly take the intravenous antibiotic drugs without doing any of their own "research." The same goes for that portion of the population that takes insulin for diabetes without one whit of independent research.

We live in a County in which the rule of law is being manipulated into the rule of the populist majority. A County where senators refuse to confirm a Supreme Court nominee because of a pending election - a rule that doesn't exist- and then toss that rule away and quickly vote for another Supreme Court nominee right before another election because it suits their political goals. AND NOT ONE OF THEM HAS BEEN VOTED OUT OF OFFICE FOR THIS HYPOCRISY.

Mark our words. We live in a country in which depending on the outcome of the next Presidential election, "they" may well come for me, and then for you, because there will be no one left to speak up for us.

Sorry to ruin your Saturday. Go have some hot soup and stay warm.

Well said, Rumpole.

Ah, the DNC talking point that trump called white supremacists good people...

You Mr. Rumpole are a liar. You have no principles. The actual truth means nothing to you. To further your favorite political narrative, you just, well, make things up. As if you needed to fabricate to make trump look bad.

It's sad. It's pathetic. You aren't even on msnbc... you have no financial incentive to lie. That makes you worse than them. You lie needlessly.

The crazy thing is a chorus of liberal lemmings will no doubt jump to your defense for lying. And even crazier, *they know* you are lying, but will defend your lie because it has been repeated so many times, to admit its falsity would be to admit their own lack of intelligence for believing the lie in the first place.

Without dropping a beat, partisan hacks like you will wax righteous about "the big lie" that the last election was stolen. As if suddenly people like you care about the difference between truth and falsity. You don't. You are just like trump...a liar.

How does it feel to be *exactly like* the person you claim to hate so much?

Dear former. Vice President Pence. Thanks for reading the blog. Even though unlike your former boss I don’t grab women by their genitals. There’s intensive therapy for your condition. Even the longest journey starts with the first step. Go find a therapist and get deprogrammed. The blog will be here when you get better.

Your pal,

Rumpole the liar.

( yeah. I lied. There is no real hope for you. Sorry. )

Most people have heard some variation of Niemöller's poem and the "First they came..." message. It's supposed to teach that one should speak out for the rights of people and groups of people, even if you're not a part of them and even if you don't like them.

There were some people who did speak out for the socialists, trade unionists, and Jews, even though they themselves did not belong to any of those targeted groups. Alas, it wasn't enough to stop those who came for the socialists, trade unionists, and Jews. And even though they had done the right thing and spoken out, eventually those that came for the others came for them. Even if someone does try to speak out for you, that does not mean it will be enough to save you. And even if you have done it for someone before, that does not mean your effort will be repaid in kind when they come for you. But if you spoke out regardless, maybe you will have a clearer conscience when you yourself are hauled away?

And sadly, some people don't discern the intended lesson from the poem. They think the best defense against anyone ever coming for you and your own kind is to get them before they can get you.

Dear Saturday, January 29, 2022 12:00:00 PM,

The Democratic Party will lose the House and Senate, and then the president two years later. America is over. You killed it. The only question left is should we join the fascists and survive, or oppose the Trumpanistas and die in the camps?

Some people are really struggling with trust. They should stop eating the Russian propaganda before bed. It takes years and a lot of money to become a doctor (or a lawyer). Those who do have a desire to help other people. If they wanted to hurt other people and spend zero time and money to get there, they would become a Republican instead.

After Ketanji Brown Jackson said "presidents are not kings" in a huge public rebuke to trump, her chances of making it to scotus rose to around 99%. Its kinda sad she will get chosen with a racial quota. For the libs out there: What race gets the next pick?

Thanks for re-publishing the Niemoller quote. I remembered the quote, but thought the author was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, so I read this great biography about Bonhoeffer, who was a young German Lutheran pastor, son of parents who were both physicians or psychiatrists, and the parents lived in Berlin throughout WW II and afterwards. Bonhoeffer surely lived up to Niemoller's words (Niemoller, btw, survived WW II), and ultimately was shot by the Nazis.
A fascinating aspect of Bonhoeffer's life was that he traveled to New York in the 30s, and spent a lot of time at black churches in Harlem, where he preached to large and frequent crowds. When WW II started, he was offered passage and asylum in the US and refused to accept this escape. He was ultimately jailed (his time there was quite unlike time at FDC: he had books, visits, food, etc.), but was executed at the very end of the war, April 1945.
