CUBS WIN

It was, quite simply, the greatest game ever played.
Not the greatest baseball game ever played. The greatest game ever played. Period.

It had strategy decisions by the top managers in the the game that will be debated for decades. Maddon removes Hendricks in the fifth for Lester??

It had the best pitchers in the game on both sides giving up more runs in one game then they did in all of the playoffs.

It had the home team hitting a game tying home run by Rajai  Davis of the Indians after his team came back from 5-1 and 6-3 deficits.

It had a rain delay.

It had pitchers on the mound in the end who were afterthoughts and here they were with the game on the line, game 7 of the world series.

It had a home run by the oldest player ever to hit a home run in game seven, beating Wilver Dornel  Stargell's record at age 39 in 1979 for the Pittsburgh Pirates by three days.

It went to extra innings.

And it was won by a team that hadn't won a championship in 108 years. No one on earth is alive from the last time the Cubs won a world series.

Cubs win.

Cubs win.

Bless the souls of Harry Caray and Ernie Banks.

Cubs win.

Well done Chicago Cubs.
Well done indeed.

Big Rico trial going on. Anyone have any updates? Don't see those in the REGJB very often.

Whoa, steady on Chap. Greatest baseball game ever? Sure, why not. But better than the Miracle on Ice, Herb Brooks, "Great moments are born from great opportunity" speech, a bunch of college kids went out and beat the Russians, a result that shocked the World ?? Not a chance.

If anyone knows the status of the reco case please share.

Dear 10:50 PM. I was actively thinking of the USA/ Russians hockey game and came to this conclusion- it was NOT the gold medal game. If it was I would concede the point. But it wasn't- USA had to win their medal game against the Fins.

I would agree it was the biggest upset in sports. I put the 69 Miracle Mets in that category as well, but that series only went 5 games.

Ali beating Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire is also 1A if the USA Hockey team is 1 in upsets.

But I cannot call the hockey game the greatest game ever. Another reason is that baseball unfolds differently than hockey. The Cubs started the game with a leadoff home run and the Indians kept battling back. Davis's homerun was breathtaking and would have sunk any lesser team, especially a team on the road. The game was the best ever contest and I stand by that. But I appreciate the debate. Its more fun than arguing the 4th amendment.

I sat on the edge of my seat the entire game and watched breathlessly throughout the eighth, ninth, and tenth innings as the Cubs pulled out the victory. I agree that it may be "one" of the greatest games, in sports, ever played.

Of course, being a homer, I'll take either game seven of the 1997 World Series or game seven of the 2013 NBA Championships (when Rumpole's favorite NBA player), Lebron James, had 37 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Miami Heat to a 95-88 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, capturing their second straight championship. (That game wasn't decided until the final 27 seconds).

To qualify for a "GOAT" title, I agree with Rumpole that it must be a game seven, a winner take all game, a game for the championship. And the Cubs v. Indians game was all that and more. It had drama, and it had that ridiculous two run HR that tied the game in the bottom of the eighth. And most important, it had the hapless Cubs, the lovable losers, who had not won the WS in 108 years. But, the play was sloppy at times, with errors on both teams (four total errors were committed in the game). The pitching was not great. The Indians starter Cory Kluber, who had pitched two magnificent games (1 and 4) was not sharp. Andrew Miller was way off his game. And Chapman was overused in game six, and showed it.

It is truly amazing that, there have only been four game sevens that went extra innings in World Series history, and the Indians have now been involved in two of them. I was there at the stadium f/k/a JRS, on October 26, 1997 when the Indians played spectacular ball, on the road, and led 2-0 through six innings, in game seven of the World Series. Starting pitcher Jared Wright had only given up one hit during those first six innings. Then Bobby Bonilla came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and hit Wright's first pitch out of the park and suddenly it was 2-1.

The Indians threatened in the top of the ninth with runners on first and third and only one out. On a ground ball to SS Edgar Renteria, he went home and threw out the runner from third on a great tag by Catcher Charles Johnson. The Marlins had survived into the bottom of the ninth. But they needed a run to send the game into extra innings. After a Moises Alou single, Bonilla struck out and the Marlins were four strikes away from losing game seven when Johnson lined a 1-2 pitch into right field. Now it was first and third and one out. Alou then scored on a sac fly by Craig Counsel and the scored was tied 2-2. Extra innings!!!

Every Marlins fan, including this one, could barely breath, let alone feel your heart beat, as we watched both teams go through the tenth inning without scoring. In the bottom of the 11th, with the clock now past midnight, Bonilla led off with a single. Greg Zaun popped out (he had attempted to bunt), and then the Indians made the mistake that would cost them dearly. Craig Counsel hit a ground ball that should have resulted in an inning ending double play. Instead, the ball went into right field and the Marlins had runners at the corners with one out. An intentional walk loaded the bases. With Bonilla standing on third, Devon White hit a grounder to short, and the Indians SS decided to go home and Bonilla was thrown out for the second out of the inning. Edgar Renteria stepped up to the plate and, with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the bottom of the 11th inning of Game 7 of the World Series, "he timed an 0-1 slider from the Indians pitcher Nagy and lined it up the middle out of reach of both Nagy (who was so close his glove even touched the ball), and the infielders." Craig Counsell scored from third, and "jumped on home plate with his fists in the air in celebration". The Marlins, a five year old franchise, had won the 1997 World Series.

Great post Rumpole.

To paraphrase and with apologies to Tolstoy. All great sport games are the same. They have underdogs and odds and great twists of fate. The Miracle that died playoff game between the Dolphins and Chargers was as incredible as any event you describe even though no championships or history was on the line. The NCAA basketball mens championship has produced a number of incredible contests. I myself participated in the greatest high school basketball game ever played and my son in the greatest high school football game. The reason this world series appears different is that both teams and cities have waited so long. All the great sporting events make you feel the same way. They really can't and shouldn't be ranked.
