On June 10, 1963, President Kennedy, fresh off the Cuban Missile Crisis which brought the world to the brink of nuclear Armageddon (at one point the Pentagon went to DefCon2), spoke at the spring commencement at the American University in favor of a proposed nuclear test-ban treaty with the Soviet Union. His words, sixty-three years later, are more poignant than ever:
"I am talking about a genuine peace. The type of peace that makes life on earth worth living...Not just peace in our time, but peace for all time...For in he final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortals."
The best recent account of the Cuban Missile Crisis is contained in the new biography of Robert Kennedy: Robert Kennedy, His Life, By Evan Thomas (2013). We highly recommend it .
