So, You Want To Be A Circuit Court Judge

THE CAPTAIN REPORTS:

SO, YOU WANT TO BE A CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE .....

We posted a story on June 15th that highlighted the resignation of Judge Victoria Sigler.  The JNC interviewed 14 applicants today to replace Judge Sigler and they have forwarded six names to Governor Scott for his consideration.  The Governor has 60 days to make his decision.

The six nominees are:

Judge Wendell Graham
Judge Lourdes Simon
Judge Jason Dimitris
Judge Charles Johnson
Ayana Harris, an Assistant Federal PD
John Wylie, private criminal defense attorney

If Governor Scott chooses one of the four County Court Judges to replace Judge Sigler, then he will get a 2-fer; meaning he will be able to then eventually appoint a new County Court Judge.

RED LIGHT RULING .....

Many of you have been waiting for a decision from Judge Leifman.

The latest update we have is that the attorney for the City requested a ten day extension to file their Closing Argument. Judge Leifman Granted that extension and the deadline is now July 20th.

Judge Leifman expects to have a ruling by Friday, August 21, 2015.

JUDICIAL PROFILES (courtesy DBR):

On a separate note, the DBR has been running the bios of several South Florida Judges recently.  Here are the three most recent:

Judge Manno-Schurr

Judge Jill Levy of Broward County

Judge Lisa Walsh

Judge Gonzalez-Whyte took a bad fall on her way to bond hearings this a.m. on the 5th floor she slipped on something outside of 5-4 and hit the floor hard. She was taken by fire rescue. I heard she broke her foot and arm.

Cue all the civil lawyers "looking to help" even though they're really busy and don't need a new case.

BTW Charlie Johnson would be a great circuit judge.

Great choices all... Simon and Johnson should have been appointed before instead of that dolt Bloch ...is he the new Peter "Camacho" Adrien as criminal lawyers often report ?

Jodie Breece should definitely have also been sent up

Lourdes Simon would be awesome as a circuit judge, she's the most qualified out of that group hands down. Shoot bring her over to criminal and send Brennan to Civil.

Ditto Charlie Johnson. I have seen him many times with pro se litigants. Treats them with respect and makes them feel good about themselves even when he rules against them, which is all the time. A good quality in a judge.

Johnson or Simon are the best choices here by far.

lets hope the governor appoints one of them

My vote is for Ayana Harris. She would be a great addition to the bench. As a former state attorney (now defense), I had the opportunity to work with her on many cases. She is fair, conscientious, and just a nice lady. No offense to the others, but its Ayana's time.

BTW, Hope Judge Gonzalez-White is ok.

That was a wonderful remembrance by Mr. Kuntz for Ruby. Sleep with the angels indeed.

Wendell Graham is a good guy. He earned a chance at Circuit Ct.

Larry Handfield must run this blog. Not a peep on the matter.

Simon has been a huge disapointment. Charlie and Ayana would be fantastic.

Dmistris still has the juice in Tally.

Wendell's ship has never been on the radar. After 25+ years as a County Judge, you'd think some Governor would have tapped him. He would be a diversity/two-fer pick, though. Not the favorite in this race, I give him 8-1 odds.

How do you figure that Simon is a disappointment. She's fair, smart, knows criminal and civil. Not to mention all her prior experience as a pd. You're just talking sh...

This is Ayana's seat. We haven't seen a female of color on the bench for too long. Come on Governor. Do the right thing.

328 you know nothing of what you speak. Simon is one of Better county court judges and has serious felony trial experience and lots of civil experience. Ayana has never been anything other than a defense attorney.

choice is clear if governor looks for competence, Simon or Johnson.

Ayana may have never been anything but a defense attorney, but prosecutors love her because she's smart and fair, and she has state and federal experience. Besides, how is it that there are NO African American women of color on the Circuit bench in Miami? And there's only been one in the history of our bench! People need to stop paying lip service to the diversity issue. I agree with 6:24, hope the governor does the right thing this time around.

Spend a day in Simons court and then comment.

Always liked Wendell Graham. Always a nice guy. Would be fine in circuit court.

Simon would be great but this governor won't appoint a PD - former or otherwise. Charlie Johnson gets this one.
