What do you make of this? Judge ORF, well liked and regarded in the REGJB, drew serious opposition in this election cycle. He has every right to seek votes where he can legitimately get them. But ....is it just us? This is a blatantly political organization with a specific agenda.
But is this "who's ox is gored?"
Would we feel uneasy if a judicial candidate was speaking at the (fictitious) "Keep Miami Green" foundation that advocates the planting of more trees and less use of fossil fuels to combat global warming?
It's not like Roe v. Wade is going to come before him. We think a higher court already addressed this issue.

Wrong! Florida has a right to privacy that these groups will be arguing doesn't give a right to abortion. So it may come before the soon to be former judge Rodriguez Fonts. I'm sure the JQC is going to be interested in this.
ReplyDeleteORF is a good judge who gives litigants in his courtroom their day in court. I don’t see anything wrong with this, even though I don’t agree with the opinion. What should not be acceptable is a judge wearing a navy uniform on billboards throughout the county in violation of the DoD to trick voters to vote for him.

ReplyDeleteHe can, and should, campaign wherever he chooses. But, if he chooses to campaign at an organization that some may find extreme, at their celebration of a ruling many find horrifying, then others are allowed to put that in the calculus as to whether to vote for him. Also, knowing ORF, my guess is that he did not condemn the Court’s decision in Dobbs at that event.
ReplyDeleteHe has a right to campaign where he wants. Voters have a right to factor that into their decision. Christian Family Coalition is against much more than abortion—gay marriage, the separation of church and state, secular public education, etc. I certainly wouldn’t campaign in front of them and will be voting for his opponent.

ReplyDeleteI always thought that the general rule was that judges and judicial candidates could ethically attend partisan political events at the beginning of the event before the partisan politics are discussed but had to hit the road when the political agenda commenced.

You can say what you want about Jason personally but saying he didn’t know Criminal Rules of Procedure is absolutely not true and no one who knows him would believe that crap.

ReplyDeleteI think Judge Bloch was a good judge will be a very good judge V2.0. But I also very much like ORF. There are SOOOOOO many judges who deserved to be replaced. This one was a head scratcher for me.
So two people walk into a bar. Stop me if you've heard this before- and one asks for an old fashioned. The second one asks for rule 3.220 of the Florida Rules Of Criminal Procedure. The bartender mixes the drink and then says "you have a bar card for that order?"

Hey who is from out of town. Where you from? Arizona? There's there Arizona judge who takes bribes. Well known. Well one day a serious case gets assigned to him and the plaintiff's lawyer shows up and hands him a bag of ten thousand dollars. The judge takes it. The net day the defense lawyer shows up and hands him a bag of twenty thousand dollars. The judge empties the bag, returns ten thousand and tells him "I'm deciding this case on the merits!"

DeleteI like ORF- I don’t know his opponent, but I do know this has made me rethink my support. I don’t know if I’m good conscious I can vote for a judge that would attend an event like this. He might have lost my vote. Is the other guy also a religious conservative?
ReplyDeleteAlthough Roe v. Wade will not come before him, it is very foreseeable that prosecutions for illegal abortions will, and many legal issues related to abortion will need to be addressed by Circuit Court judges.

ReplyDeleteBloch should’ve run against Blumstein. ORF is one of the better judges we have. He reads the cases and rules on the law without bias. Also, do we know what he said at the event? If he just attended and d didn’t discuss Dobbs then bud attendance at the event shouldn’t deter any voters who were already going to vote for him based on his temperament and fairness.
ReplyDeleteBut it does deter me. I agree, I think he is a good judge, but as a woman, the fact that he could attend something that “celebrates” that my rights have been taken away, is not something I can easily forgive.

ReplyDeleteDoes anybody know what Judge ORF said at the event? To me that seems (at least somewhat) relevant, yet nobody that I have seen has reported on that. Not to make excuses for judges or for any politician who campaigns, but they are known from time to time either for not entirely vetting where they campaign or for not thinking through the ramifications of doing so.
ReplyDeleteSo as one who had trials in front of both of these Judges in the REG-ORF was a very nice guy and knew the law but would never do a trial- in mine he punted it to Tunis b/c he had to meet a repairman at his residence -the double C in there (yes that was a thing) also told me in a year they had never gone to trial in front of him. As for Block he tried but did not seem to grasp the nuances of criminal law fully - never had an issue personally with him.
ReplyDeleteJudicial candidate Tylman now Cervera spent a good chunk of her campaign funds "advertising" with the same Cristian Family Coalition. Perhaps this was an effort for her to buy the only endorsement she might get. Judge Lody Jean was endorsed by S.A.V.E. . Tylman / Cervera has not shown up to one judicial forum. One of her advisors, Michael Gongora at Becker Law, is, according to his Wikipedia page, openly gay. Gongora will be hosting a judicial forum in Miami Beach in a few days. Tylman / Cervera is the only judicial candidate that bought ads from this intolerant, religious ultra right wing organization. I understand that there will be questions asked about this significant ad spend by Tylman / Cervera and also of Gongora's support for this unqualified judicial candidate.

DeleteHow pathetic that Becker & Poliakoff PA, a once prominent and respected law firm is the only large law firm that is a supporter of an unqualified and incompetent judicial candidate Teressa Maria Tylman, who now is calling herself Cervera for the election. Their website prominently brags about their commitment to diversity at the same time they try to unseat an excellent judge who was appointed twice and who was targeted because of her Haitian (Black) sounding name. Becker & Poliakoff should be ashamed of trying to put someone as unqualified as Tylman / Cervera on the Circuit Court. Becker & Poliakoff PA, is now calling itself 'Becker Law'. Wonder if that new name has any connection to the very substantial, eight figure, settlement that they paid to settle the recent Sunrise condo collapse tragedy case.
