DON'T WATCH THE SUPER BOWL

We're pretty much done with the NFL. We cannot sit and cheer while young men destroy their brains. Read this NY Times Op Ed piece by Emily Kelly about former NFL Player Rob Kelly "I'm the Wife Of a Former NFL Player. Football Destroyed His Mind."
Read that. They try and cheer a vicious hit.

Instead try this...fast...do the opposite of the rest of the country and give your body a break and don't eat at all while everyone is stuffing themselves with pizza and wings. You will feel amazing tomorrow morning.

Donate time at a homeless facility. The country is consumed with conspicuous consumption. Hundreds of private jets will fly into Minneapolis today. Give something back to those who are less fortunate at a time when (unlike Christmas guilt) no one is talking about the poor and homeless and the hungry anymore.

The NFL has become synonymous with jingoism-patriotism. You can't attend a game without lengthy time devoted to the national anthem, military jets flying overhead,  video feeds of troops overseas. Football has nothing to do with patriotism. Nothing. You can be a solider and sacrifice your life to your country and not like football. You can be a patriot and not like football. You don't need to stand with your hand over your heart and sing patriotic songs under the scrutiny of your neighbor eyeing you. Are you singing loud enough? Do you really believe the words? If you are faking it, they will report you. A football game is becoming more like a forced North Korean military rally than a game.

Spend a quiet afternoon reading Rupi Kaur's poetry. She will touch your soul. A five yard run off tackle will not.

But tradition is tradition. So for your enjoyment, we give you our super bowl analysis.

Coin toss lock: Heads.
under 48.5
Cheater FG will be first score.
Under 24 points first half.

And ...... forgo the points and take the money line, because tonight, in the streets of Philly, they will be singing "Fly Eagles Fly, on the road to victory..."

From Occupied America, try doing something different than the crowd. It will make you a better person. Fight the power. Don't watch the super bowl.

  1. Back from a week in Tallahassee with Miami-Dade movers and shakers wondering how Cohen, Tunis and Hersch have managed to upset so many of them.

  3. I would not give one ounce of effort or contribute a dime to help the so-called "homeless". They are responsible for their plight by a lack of effort to get a basic education or develop a job skill. They prefer not to work but to take drugs and are parasites on our society. If they didn't leach off the public maybe they would strive to gain employment and not spend money they coach out of or gullible motorists at intersections on drugs.

  4. I take Heads and the Over 48.5; just for fun of course.

And I'll take more JJ Watt's in this world. A man who tried to raise $200,000 for the people of Houston after their disastrous hurricane and subsequent flooding, and instead raised $37 million.

If you missed his speech last night, in accepting the 2017 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, then watch and listen:

  5. You Do know that the troops carrying and unfurling the flag, the jets flying over and the playing of the National Anthem is actually a recruiting commercial for the US Department of Defense. DoD pays the NFL for the flag ceremony, about an average. $10,000 a game.

  6. Good for the DOD. NFL should be ashamed of taking the money, but whatever.....
Loved seeing the Medal of Honor winners at coin toss. Mostly small statured men (5’7”) who did amazing deeds in the fire of combat most mortals cannot begin to apprehend.

  7. Amid all of the meaningless Super Bowl hoopla and extravaganza, please note the sad passing of Harry B Smith at age 91, one of the true giants of our legal community for many decades. Harry was an exemplary lawyer, a devoted mentor, a superlative educator, an exceptional community and bar leader, a wonderful family man, and a true mensch to all that knew him. We will not be soon blessed with his loving example again! DMD

  8. 1:04--I'm a prosecutor. But I'm going to call asshole. There are many, many reasons that people end up on the streets. For example, what about people who are disabled with no financial parachute, or people with serious mental health issues that have no family to care for them?

  9. 2 for 2 folks. Nailed both bets.

    My take on the game:

Foles was unbelievable. Can't play much better then he did, and he's the backup QB. He made every throw asked of him. He threw two ridiculously good TD passes to Jeffreys and Clement. He caught a TD pass off a superb call from HC Doug Pederson (former 3rd string Fins QB who is best known for stepping in for Scott Mitchell after he was injured, after stepping in for Dan Marino, and winning Shula's record breaking 325th victory, over none other than the Eagles). He made several fantastic plays on 3rd down to keep drives going, and he had one amazing two yard pass on 4th down to gain another set of downs.

Side Note about JT and the half-time show. It sucked. We've been spoiled with some amazing recent halftime acts; this one was one to forget.

And of course, it just had to come down to the last play of the game. Did you expect anything less when Brady and Belichick are involved in the game.

    Congrats to the Eagles.

  10. I wonder if 1:04 goes to church, sends his kids to parochial school, or otherwise calls himself a catholic/christian? I am an atheist, so I generally don't give a hoot about someone's religion. But I am regularly amused by the number of "Christians" that I have heard give similar rants about the homeless. I am just curious as to whether 1:04 is also one of these hypocrites.

Rump, you're absolutely right about the ugly forced patriotism at NFL games. The worst part is, the people who fall for it don't realize how much its cheapening actual patriotic sentiment. That "patriotism" on display at NFL games is there as part of a marketing package - they are commercializing what many people hold sacred. Yuck.

  11. Could've sworn rumphole changed from tails to heads after the fact.

  12. Trey Burton,a former gator triple threat threw the pass that probably won the game for the eagles.

  13. I am sick of the scurrilous allegations about me.

  14. And how about the fact I called the underdog as an outright winner? Where are the props for that? I got the under wrong, but still, the Eagles are a gutsy call going against Mr. perfect and his cheater coach. The money line was 165 so for every 100 you bet you got back 165. There is a guy in Vegas who placed multiple million dollar money line bets on the Eagles. He wrecked a few books and he is the same guy who destroyed the books on the world series this past fall.

  15. I never thought I would see the day that Rumpy actually would change his post to make it look like he called the coin toss. He clearly chose Tails and the Under. I noticed that when El Capitan chose Heads and the Over and I thought, well, I'm betting with Rump as he always gets it right. Props to Rump for hitting the Eagles and the money line even if he missed on his calls on the coin toss, first to score, under for the half and under for the game.

  16. So Rumphole, if you bet $100 on coin toss (loss), $100 on first to score (loss), $100 on under for first half (loss), $100 on under for game (loss) and $100 on winner of game (win), how would you have made out at the end?
