Meanwhile, second only to the plethora of inauguration events, The Judge Blake retirement tour continues through the holidays, with pretty much every legal group known issuing awards and holding parties in his honor's honor. Next up: the South Sweetwater Probate lawyers society will be throwing a shin-ding to honor the departing judge.
Things are winding down. Not too many trials for the next two weeks. So should we do our annual best books or do a top 20 movie countdown? Or just go dark like some other (federal) blogs?
Money never sleeps and neither does Rumpole.

Governor Scott has called an 8am presser to introduce his appointment for the 86th Justice to the Florida Supreme Court.
My prediction: the appointee will be very conservative, a member of the Federalist society, and hold Justices Antonin Scalia, Ricky Polson and Charles Canady in high regard.
To William at 3:05 PM (12/14/16 A Season of Change). Yes, I have reviewed the Sarasota sentencing disparity study and I did plan on doing a story next week if I can just get a verdict in the two week trial I am currently in.
Finally, looks like the JNC will be getting busy with the new year. With his appointment of Judge Victoria del Pino (44 years old), that opens up a seat on the County Court. And with three of the six finalists for the 3rd DCA currently wearing robes, there's a 50/50 shot that the Gov will get yet another Miami-Dade appointment; this one would be in the Circuit Court. And with the resignation of Judge Brennan, that opens another seat on the Circuit Court. Don't feel bad for Judge Brennan and her future. According to her last Financial Disclosure Form filed in December of 2011, while she wasn't in the same league with Jason Bloch, she did record a net worth of $9,844,134.

ReplyDeleteJudge Lawson is an excellent judge who began his legal career down here in Miami-Dade County. he then moved to Tallahassee for a few years and then to Orlando. he is very bright, very thoughtful, and a moderate conservative. As the governor is conservative, that should not be surprising although President Obama has generally appointed very liberal judges and justices. Perhaps Governor Scott should have taken a page from his book and appointed a fire-breathing right winger.

I publish it on the theory that only light defeats darkness and stupid comments and beliefs should have harsh light shone on them, rather than be buried where they fester. The individual knows nothing about Judge Del Pino, who should be a fine circuit court judge.
ReplyDeleteLast two weeks to get some amazing food at the pop-up RenGenII with superstar chef Juan-Carlos before he takes off for his million dollar a year job as an executive chef for a new chain of Gasto Pubs Hq'd in Austin, Texas.
ReplyDeleteLast night I had the flash fried baby octopus drizzled with mango glaze and white truffle oil. Ravioli stuffed with slow cooked Pork belly in an organic yellow tomato cream sauce with grass fed cow cream. My date had Lobster and Ny Strip chunks fried in a butter sauce and topped with artichoke hearts creamed.
We also had Oysters baked in a purple sweet potato puff pasty. Yum.
For dessert I had frozen plum pudding and she had a blueberry cream torte with home made peaberry coffee ice cream.
Tonight the special is supposed to be a saffron Chipino with Mediterranean prawns, Alaska King Crab, and Long Island Bay wild caught scallops.
Sunday is the traditional slow roasted pig and the gluten free pizzas in a wood burning stove that is out back on a truck with home made Mozzarella and ricotta and caviar stuffed mushrooms. Great for watching the Dolphin Game.
I can only imagine Sunday at this restaurant being "great for watching the Dolphin Game" since the game is Saturday night...
DeleteI ate there Thursday night. Had some asian noddle bowl with - If I'm not mistaken- New Zealand Lamb chunks and a quail-egg egg-roll in which the wrapper was made from chick-pea flour and chiccarones.
ReplyDeleteIt was really great food, but $85 for that meal (I also had two jumbo stone crab claws with raspberry butter sauce which was much better than the traditional mustard sauce) and a flourless peach and African Chocolate pie with organic chocolate from Mozambique of all places seems a bit over priced. Figure $30 for the crab claws, $25 for the asian bowl, $10 for the egg rolls and $10 for the dessert, it should have been $75 not $85 but maybe I'm quibbling. I know I miss the food its always an adventure if you can find out where they're popping up and what's on the menu.
Average judge. Average call.
ReplyDeleteA career in misdemeanor battery cases doesn't prepare you for circuit. Perhaps handling at least one felony in your life might. Weak choice

ReplyDeleteThere are so many judges in the building who do not have criminal or government experience or have ever tried a case for that matter. Del Pino has and will provide guidance to her attorneys if asked. If you are making these comments you have never been before her. She is fair and doesn't put up with any BS from either side. People need to be in court every day to see how the system and the judges really work to make their opinions.
ReplyDeleteIt is rare to see a judge that has government and trial experience and Judge Del Pino has both. This knowledge is necessary on the bench and most do not have it. She treats both sides fairly and doesn't take BS from either (I wish more judge would do). If you are making negative comments, you have not been before her or have been before her enough to really make an opinion. The reality is, attorneys should be there daily to make any valid opinions. She is always willing to give attorneys feedback/advice on how to be better litigators and knows what works and doesn't work for a jury. We need more people like her on the bench.

ReplyDeleteShe never tried a case to a jury. Second chair and handling the direct of a records custodian doesn't count. A litigator has picked juries, done direct and cross of material witnesses, argued JOA motions (as well as other substantive Pretoria laws motions) and presented closing arguments. Not just once or a few times, numerous times. And done it when her own client's liberty is at stake.
ReplyDeleteShe can get someone like 10:31 to say she's done all that but I say BS. Show me the stats. Give me case numbers and I'll eat my words. Not saying she can't be a good Judge but she certainly was NEVER a trial lawyer.
That should read "pre-trial motions" and "Not just once or a few times, but numerous times".
