The Investiture of Judge Richard Hersch was a wonderful, poignant event, splashed liberally with good humor attesting to a lifetime of achievement of a great lawyer, father, and husband.
It's truly heartwarming when one of the good guys becomes a judge.
It's a beautiful spring weekend. Enjoy.
Tannebaum Photobomb! Congrats Richard.
ReplyDeleteCinco de Shumie at Tobacco road tonight.
ReplyDeleteI was there too. Brian did a great roast and Richard's daughter was delightful as a speaker.
ReplyDeleteNow, who are all you lazy lawyers going to email for free advice now that Hersch is off the email list??????????
“Democrats in Miami-Dade finally have a choice and I urge each and every one of you to exercise your constitutional right to vote and I expect you to vote for Rod Vereen for Congress,” he told a crowd of supporters at Overtown’s Black Police Precinct Courthouse and Museum.

Sakaya Kitchen in the Midtown area- along with Sugarcanes- was the place 40-50 something stock brokers, CPAs, and attorneys took their 20 something assistants to show them they still had it, during a lunch, early dinner or happy hour before heading home to the wife and kids.
ReplyDeleteNow SK to aficionados has opened in downtown Miami, and the legal crowd is flocking to there for lunch. PDs and hip RC's populate the dinning crowd, while the O'Donnells are there so much they own the joint.
Try the cracking duck herb sandwich, the ginger Brussel sprouts , the pom buns stuffed with 8hr roasted pork and the orange glazed ribs. Spicy-sticky rice is a huge fav as a side dish, and six pieces of the Korean Shrimp will impress that 20 something MBA candidate who is following you around like a puppy dog, unless she's a vegan and then order her the japanese eggplant.
Sakaya Kitchen Downtown at 125 SE 3rd Avenue.
It's obvious that Vereen has no real interest in running the SAO. He just wants name recognition so he can run for Congress. Not surprising, because he isn't that good of an attorney. Has jury appeal and charisma, but not much else. Has he even bothered to say what his plans are for the SAO?
ReplyDeleteReally fake Kenny W?! Sugarcane and Sakaya Kitchen are fine but dated choices. If in the Midtown area I would suggest Jean Paul's House, The Federal or the always reliable Mandolin.
ReplyDeleteThe real Kenny W NEVER eats in a chain restaraunt.
ReplyDeleteBlacks cant vote, it starts with the disorderly conduct arrest when they first turn 18, then they cant get a job and the next charge is Possession with intent to deliver. result, another non-voter.
ReplyDeleteI like Rod but I'm puzzeled by his move to run for state attorney. Does he really think he has a chance? He has no major black endorcement and no money. And I'm sorry but Spence Jones is too controversial. He should avoid her and take care to run a clean race.
ReplyDelete4:21 pm you are an asshole. I don't care what color you are, but you are indeed the most miserable person. Grow up and take your nasty racist attitude to some other blog.
ReplyDeleteZB
May I suggest. 4:21- while probably meaning the comment in another more baseless context has hit upon a point- the disenfranchisement of afro-americans because of the systemic bias in a criminal justice system designed to process a never ending assembly line of bad arrests into quick convictions. The result is -beyond the problems assoctaed with young men losing their right to vote- is a system that engenders no respect.
ReplyDeletemay the governor Rot in hell for thinking Hersh has the temperament to be judge. So says all the opposing counsel or just opposing thinkers who Richard threw objects at...
ReplyDeletei am 4;21. I was not suggesting "another more baseless context." I am alluding the systematic disenfranchisement of black voters. U must know every time you get some black defendant to plea out to CTS on a felony u have stripped him of his right to vote. It is our reality. If u care to be indignant about this then consider it the next time u stand before a judge and articulate the "negotiated" plea. I am sure the current Republican State Cabinet did not consider the political realities of this when they made it harder for felons to recover their civil rights two years ago (Pam Bondi included).

Afro-Americans, Rumpole? How old are you? 100?
ReplyDelete@ Rumple I think your correct that's what he met I think you all need to read the "New Jim Crow" by Attorney and Law Professor Michelle Alexander it explains in depth the under caste system that is operating in the Judicial System now in detail. It explains it in detail the war on drugs is really a money motivated war on minority's. "The Edward Byrne State and Local Federal Grant Assistance Program", which gives grant many for and Urges Law enforcement to target drug arrest which percentage wise are non violent crimes while not being funded for pursuing more serious violent crimes. When rick Scott took office he immediately repealed Charlie Christ Bill on Voter Rights Restoration why because that's 600,000 disenfranchised voters in Florida alone that's why republicans are fro voter suppression Laws once your a convicted felon even for a non-violent office your non- relevant.
ReplyDeleteAM and Cooper, while I agree that the law needs to be modified, I disagree with the suggestion that the laws are designed AND still exist for the PURPOSE of discriminating. Many of the peope who support these laws simply are trying to protect themselves and their families. We need to educate these folks on the harms and reasonable solutions.

In 1969, our Modern War Drugs was started by then Pres. Richard Nixon to get rid of Black , Hippys and ant-war protesters by locking them up and stealing their civil rights; especially their right to vote against Republican Middle America's " Silent Majority" of Right Thinking Loyal Anti- Communist Americans .
ReplyDeleteIt should not surprise anyone that they used the Southern Methods of suppression.
Nixon and his plumbers used any and all means , and Jim Crow was effected in keeping White Control of the South.
Let us not forget that the old Southern Democrat morphed into the New Southern Republican at the end of the 1960s. Starting with first w/ Claude Kirk's election as Gov. of FLA, then Nixon's election , they began voting Republican.
By 1980 the Southern Democrat who was a hawk , anti-hippy , pro-Jim Crow and anti-bussing supported Republicans . The old Klan guys went from Democrat to Republican, but their philosophy and methods never changed only the party affiliation.
FLORIDA is and was the Old South. It was the Third State to succeed the Union and only Confederate State East of the Mississippi River NOT to have its Capital captured by the Yankees during the War of Confederate Liberation {LOL}.
For Some Its hard to believe what it was like w/ Jim Crow, but I grew up hereand remember and I pass as White*.
We had segregated beaches. Take out counters because 'coloreds' who could NOT be served in some restaurants .
Royal Castle had take out windows now used to cafe cubano. - go behind 73 West Flagler to the cafe on NW1st Street - see an old Royal Castle I eat at as a kid - that did not serve Blacks back then, the one, w/ side window).
I still remember - Blacks to the back of the bus when I was in elementary school. The US District Court did not sign an order to Integrate Dade County Public Schools till 1969 ( I was in 9th grade) and the Court ordered bussing the next year.
So it does not take a stretch of the Inagination to think the poor and minorities, especial;ly Balcks are getting screwed still.
DS
* As a Jew no good Southerner nor Klansmen would think of me as White even with my light/ pale skin. Just ask Mr. Frank.
BTDT, Heres somtething to think about. In the beginning was Slavery, then there was Jim Crow, both were deemed illegal and we even had the worst war in American history to abolish slavery and a President was killed as a result of that. Jim Crow was struck down not to long ago in 1964 was the Civil Rights Bill under JBJ. Well guess what they had to come up with a way to do it in a pretentious color blind way, "the Judicial System". Now do you remember the Federal Drug Law that was Just remanded regarding harsh sentencing for Cocaine/Crack Cocaine which is the same thing, as a matter of fact more whites use drugs in America because they're the majority of the population. After the Civil rights Era that's when the strategy got more rigid under the so called color blindness of the Law , but check the numbers and you'll understand.
ReplyDeleteD.S., You hit the nail on the head. My Mom and Dad tell me stories about colored and white water fountains Jumbo's on 76st and 7 ave was white's only Minorities had to go out back to the take out window. Most people on this blog don't care to know or research this stuff they just follow the status quo. you notice when Jewish people talk about the Holocaust, there is empathy and compassion, but when Minorities talk about Slavery in America for Hundred's of years the attitude is oh let it go and hush up about that, and that is inappropriate. Slavery, was outlawed, so Jim Crow was created then Jim Crow was outlawed in 1964 by LBJ and Thurgood Marshall, so then they had to enact the War on Crime which was civil crime initially, protest, sit ins, boycotts and things of that nature non violent. The protest combined with the hippie movement, created a need for a new institution that would not be deemed "Illegal" which is the War on Crime/Drugs that target who minorities U.S. statistics show that Caucasians is Majority % percentage of users. My question is this after the Oliver North CIA drug scandal or Drug Dealing as I call it, as that what it was. How does the dope steal get in America with all the homeland security is it the poor minorities who's shipping and receiving.... The crack Law was especially aimed toward minorities and Eric Holder after congressional review finally remanded that biased Law. It's interesting how the people who call themselves council are not aware of these very surreal facts.
ReplyDeleteBTDT you should read the book your in the dark, you don't have a clue whats going on.
ReplyDeleteBTDt, Did you know that in 1792 when President George Washington dismissed Major L'Enfant who also backed out of designing the capitol do to lack of funds, the project was taken over by a Black Architect who designed the capitol and surrounding area, but they named downtown D.C. L'Enfant anyway. It's a lot you need to learn.
ReplyDeleteAM, I understand your point and agree that many laws were passed for despicable reasons. Discrimination continues to exist in many forms and must be rooted out. You can't just assume, however, that every law that effects one community more than another is discriminatory. Stupid laws get passed all of the time (the Federal crack law is one good example). That's my only point.
