According to the Herald and Ace Reporter David Ovalle, things on Miami Beach have gone fairly smoothly this weekend and the police have done a good job. Ovalle's report is here, including tenacious and in depth reporting on the "bikini-clad women" partying on south beach. No story is too difficult or disturbing for Mr. Ovalle. He does what he needs to do to get the facts, bikinis notwithstanding.
I think you are wrong but I give you a huge amount of credit for coming out early and boldly. If you you correct, it's adios Spoelstra. Odd thing is, he will never get a head coaching gig anywhere else. He will always be looked upon as Pat Riley's puppet, rightly or wrongly, a guy who took a hooker to bed every night but couldn't get laid.

Residents have to leave the beach for the weekend and the rest of us have to tell our families not to visit this weekend bc of the ass clowns who take over the beach and shoot each other. Pathetic. Move this awful festival to naranja or Harlem

Very heroic to shoot a nut job to death who was unarmed. A hero indeed. Try taking him bro, or kicking him in the nads. Awesome culture when the police call a cop a hero for shooting an unarmed man. Personally, I'd be embarrassed to do that. Use a tazer, a billy club or redirect them to the ground lime you usually do. Can't wait to see the herald surveillance tapes.
Do cops get bonuses for shooting unarmed people. If so, all our tax dollars will be going to these pathetic, weak excuses for men who get off shooting people. Their wives and kids must be so proud of their "manly " husbands"
Maybe they can start shooting kids to show how really tough they are. I guess this is payback for being a bitch in high school and never getting any...
How much is this costing the citizens of Miami Beach in police overtime and hours?? There's a police car parked at EVERY residential intersection on Alton Road. Who the hell is making money from this fiasco, because all the regular merchants are either closed or hurting? Stop the madness already.

ReplyDeleteSome moronic reader of this insipid blog commented in the prior post about me being in Disney World. Nothing could be further from the truth. I spend this weekend in my high floor Brickell Ave condo. Some running, some gym, some classical music and that is my weekend.
ReplyDeleteBut I have been to Disney World and I have one comment- we as a society are doomed. Have you seen the sad profession of obese bodies in electric scooters? These are people who appear to be in their 30's, 40's and 50's and they are so big, they cannot walk. So they scoot around sipping enormous gallon size containers of coca cola followed by a herd of waddling children and spouses. This doesn't make me angry, believe it or not. It makes me cry
Do you have any idea of the carb content of a human face? The processed sugars alone can send you into diabetic shock. The cop was saving that guy when he shot him. Saving him from a lifetime of bad nutrition.

There's the big pink for the best Sobe breakfast in town; there's starbucks for refueling during the day; I like the salsa and guacamole at Rosa Mexicana on Lincoln Road; and of course there's always Texas de Brasil for some nice steak. ReplyDeleteRump, you are normally right on many things. You are dead wrong on this prediction of Celtics in 6. It's probably why you did not articulate your reasoning. Let me note you whine about the Heat being spoiled brats. What do you think the Celtics are? Kevin Garnett is one of the biggest thugs in the league, generally considered one of the most dirty players, and is an all around asshole to people. Paul Pierce was stabbed 11 times at a club in 2000. Rondo has a horrible attitude in general - remember last year he refused to even get into the huddle during the playoff games. Doc called him out in the locker room in front of everyone asking him if he wanted to even be part of the team and Rondo blew him off - there's a reason there was rumors of him being traded despite him being oh so talented.
ReplyDeleteMiami won this series 4-1 last season and honestly, Boston is worse while Miami is better. Miami basically has a 9 man rotation LeBron, Wade, Chalmers, Miller, Haslem, Battier, Joel Anthony, Turiaf, and Norris Cole all play over 10 minutes a game, are younger, and have had the pleasure of a few days rest in a grueling season (plus, James Jones is widely considered a decent bench player who can play in a pinch).
For the Celtics, they only use a core 7 man rotation of Pierce, Garnett, Rondo, Brandon Bass, Ray Allen, Mickael Pietrus, and Ryan Hollins (with only these healthy players playing over 10 minutes a game in the post season). Ray Allen plays over 30 minutes and CANNOT MOVE with his ankle injury. He will have a great time defending Wade (a little bit more difficult than Evan Turner and Jason Richardson/JJ Reddick).
The only advantage the Celtics have in this series is at the point with Rondo. However, Rondo is a horrible shooter. He has his nights, but generally that is the case. I envision they will play Haslem and Joel Anthony on Garnett, LeBron will cover Pierce, and Wade will be guarding Rondo/Allen depending on how the game goes. In the end I think Miami will win in 6. Deeper bench, younger/fresher legs, better shooters, and home court.

ReplyDelete7:54 - you are dead wrong as well. Spoelstra's father has a relationship with the ownership in Golden State; there were rumors he was going to leave to coach there recently. He may not be the greatest coach, but he is a decent coach and young. He will find a job once he leaves.
Once the Finals hit though, I think they Heat are in trouble. Here is hoping that OKC/San Antonio go 7. And Rump, you can keep picking against the Heat as I guess a broken clock is even right twice a day. They won't be favored in the finals, or even have home court in the series, so it's not really a huge prediction.
Your general distaste for the Heat somewhat annoys me at this point. These players are no worse than the majority of athletes. LeBron and Bosh TOOK LESS MONEY to play in a city they wanted to play in. They earned that right. Can you imagine Rump if you left law school and were then told, "congratulations, you are required to now work at the Cleveland County District Attorney Office's," or even move to a different country. I don't believe you are originally from Miami either, and you at one point took your talent's to south beach AND THEN LEFT PUBLIC INTEREST WORK to make more money. The Decision had good intentions, but was executed horribly by LeBron, but sadly, what can you expect? He has never been told no his entire life and has horrible friends/people in charge of his career/image. That stupid event at the arena was the idea of the people who run the Heat and NOT THE PLAYERS. Again, poorly executed but not their faults as they are employees and not the employer.
Having said all this, and this isn't setting the bar high, but none of these Heat players have ever been arrested. You don't see them out every night like some NBA players do. Bosh (The Chris Bosh Foundation), LeBron (LeBron James Family Foundation), Miller (Mike Miller Foundation), Wade (Wade's World Foundation), Haslem (Udonis Haslem Children Foundation), and Battier (The Battier Take Charge Foundation) and Chalmers (Mario V Chalmers Foundation) are all heavily involved in charity work, both in the Miami area and their home communities.
Drew Brees is fighting with the Saints over a couple of million dollars. I know your defense will be he is not local, but why not call him out? I will note Haslem, Battier, and Miller also took huge pay cuts to either stay or play in Miami.
Give me something legit Rump, and I will get behind you. LeBron is a bad tipper (this is true, as I know first hand he doesn't tip - as an aside, if you were lucky enough to hit up Morton's after a game when Jermaine O'Neal was with the Heat, you were likely in for a treat and a free dinner if you ate at the bar), Bosh is a jerk as a person (he actually is), and I will be more inclined to at least say you have a legit gripe and basis for your complaint.
While I'm at it, I have some other Rump predictions for 2012:
1. The Miami Dolphins WILL NOT win the Superbowl.
2. Danica Patrick WILL NOT win a major race.
3. Mitt Romney WILL WIN some states in the general election.
4. Obama WILL WIN some states in the general election.
5. KFR will get some votes.
6. Rod will get some votes.
This has been a great weekend on Miami Beach. It has been so quiet, like a ghost town here on West Avenue.
ReplyDeleteThe police seem to be doing a great job. Mostly misdemeanor arrests, people doing stupid things, things that go on every weekend anyway. Looks like all the parties are having a good time.
I don't know what this is costing me in tax dollars, but if it could be this quiet and peaceful every weekend, I'm willing to pay more.
Should be DUI checkpoints every weekend out here. Might keep some of the douchebags from the other Miami neighborhoods away. Enforce noise ordinances, stop the open alcohol containers. Maybe all those random stops would help collect some more guns and drugs. It would probably keep many of the punk, wanna be gangsters away. Let them go to the Grove or stay in Kendall / Hialeah or wherever they come from.
In fact, put up a 25 foot concrete wall on each causeway. Residents only. Like Escape from NY.

Miller, had the respect to show up and administer the Oath to the Executive Officers,The Honorable Judge Prescott administered the oath to the Vice President, and the Honorable Teresa Lundy-Thomas administered the oath to the then President of the NAACP. Toured the city went into the Cathedral where JFK announced his Presidency, looked at the John Hancock building, and ate at the restaurants near Quincy Market. Once again the men were 50/50 in hospitality, the women loved me, they were pretty with green eyes. I still hate Boston.

100 people arrested out of 250,000 is .04%. Most for misdemeanors. The City, County and State split 7% sales tax, plus resort and hotel taxes.

I do question the First Admendment violation of commercial speech. Stopping or citing or arresting 'Promoters" from handing out passes, cards, hand-bills, etc sounds nice for litter control, but it the First Amendment.
Truly it is another liberal GREEN policy , the kind of policy any good American , especially a Tea-Partier should oppose.

In 2009, 197 Florida children died as a result of abuse or neglect.
The following year, the number fell to 136 — a drop of 30 percent.
Among kids whose family had a prior history of intervention by child-welfare workers, the improvement was even more dramatic: The death toll fell 40 percent.
The Department of Children & Families unilaterally changed the way it tallied child deaths involving neglect.
The new policy, approved in the summer of 2010, significantly narrowed the parameters for what is considered abuse and neglect. The steep decline followed immediately — the first significant reduction in a decade.
A Jacksonville doctor who heads a local death review team blasted the new guidelines in a detailed, six-page 2010 memo, calling them “fatally flawed.”

ReplyDeleteSorry, you are wrong on this one. If you walk around the beach, you will see how many local shops are closed. Show owners have learned that the amount of business to be had this weekend is not worth even opening for.
Hotels at 2/3 full is an embarrassment for the "Riviera of the US".
Residents leave and spend their money elsewhere.
The cafes and restaraunts are offering 2 for 1 on MEALS just to get people in. Offering free food to have people sit out front to make the places look enticing.
No doubt there are some businesses that do well this weekend. But they are few and far between. And the mess left behind by the fliers and stickers left all over the place is for us to clean up.
DS, You lost me on the latter portion of your post, however It's somewhat appeasing to see that you are cognizant of the fact that minorities had to have a specific work I.d. just to go over to Miami Beach. My Father and Uncle routinely explain to me stories of their account of legal profiling. Sad part it was the law/ordinance at that time. I very seldom go to Miami Beach for this reason. Now I see colleagues, complaining,"Oh how dreadful the idea of having to display and wear Id to gain access in the building". It's pretty comical and ironic to hear them voice their grievances on that issue.

The Heat beat Boston last year in the playoffs when Boston was in much better shape. No way the Celtics are going to take this series. The Heat MUST WIN the whole shabang this year or the team will fall apart. If LeBron and Wade play like the did against the Pacers, we got this. Rump will eat his words.

ReplyDeleteRemember that dude we all laughed at when he told us he was quitting his state job and going to live his dream as a crab fisherman in Alaska? Well, he didn't make it on to the show Deadliest Catch but he did catch on as a greenhorn with a boat. Is back in Miami with 101K after taxes. Plus get this- when he was prepping to leave for king crab season in the fall some Alaska gold guys were selling gold at a 5% discount, the catch being you had to buy 25K worth and not redeem it until March. Gold futures as it were. Allows the gold purveyors to lock in the price and allows the fishermen to speculate. The kid bought two contracts and when he redeemed them with his crab money his 50K of gold was worth 64K. So now he's back in Miami with a stack of cash, a few vials of 24Karat pure gold dust, and done with being a lawyer. He's going back on the boat not as a greenhorn but with a full share in the fall. With the crab fishing in the winter and the cod and whiting and ling in the spring and summer he says he can easily make 220K a year working 30-40 weeks a year. The dude made it.

ReplyDeleteDoes anybody (other than Heat-hating Rumpole) really believe that the Celtics are going to win four out of the next five games? You can say that the Celtics shot below their average and that, statistically, they will bounce back with a better shooting percentage but this argument works both ways. In their desparate attempt to clog up the middle and prevent Lebron & Wade from driving to the basket (a plan itself that wasn't totally successful) the Celtics went to a zone defense in the second half, giving up the long jumper. If the Heat had made another 5 out of the 20 three-pointers that they missed, the game would have been a 30 point blow-out instead of a mere 14 point blow-out. Like the Celtics, the Heat 3 point shooting can only get better. The Celtics--especially stars Pierce and Allen--looked old and beaten, and, in my opinion, will be lucky to win one game against the Heat.
