We run this every year. It's important.
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
beneath the crosses row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly;
Scarce heard amid the guns below,
We are dead.
Short days ago, we lived, felt dawn glow;
Loved and were loved
and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
If Ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.
John McCrae
WWI Solider who died on the front in France of pneumonia in 1918.
While you're at it click here and read Judge Jon Schlessinger's moving tribute to his Uncle Edward Kielich, who was buried with full honours at Arlington Cemetery.
They’ve seen things we could never imagine.
They’ve done things people were not meant to do.
They risked their lives so we can live in freedom.
They are our veterans and today we honor them.
101 Years ago today, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 the guns of the great war fell silent.
Our Boys, The Doughboys, lie at rest in places with names like Flanders, Bony, and Belleau. They died on battlefields named Marne, Somme, and Verdun. Almost 5 Million Americans were in uniform for World War I, and over 100,000 died, and more than half of those deaths were on the battlefield.
It was the first time American boys would be asked to save Europe. It would not be the last.
Our nation has answered the call time and time again. Mostly for the right reasons, but not always. Yet we’ve always answered the call. And the price has always been high. Our young men and now our young women lie in battlefield graveyards all over the world, never to grow older, never to see the results of their sacrifice. Sacrifice given with the full assurance that their country would never let them down and would never forget. Sacrifice that Abraham Lincoln called "The last full measure of devotion."
Today we remember. And at 11 am, stop for a moment and take two minutes and reflect on the good things in your life. Think of your home, or your children, or your parents, or the freedoms you enjoy, and your comforts and remember none of that would have been possible without them.
Thank you. It doesn't seem enough, but Thank You, each and every one of you.

ReplyDeleteExcellent Log commemorating the selfless men and women who served in the armed forces of our nation.Thank you for such tribute and rememberance.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Nice video tribute as well.

ReplyDeleteToday, I would like to send a special thanks to my brave brother, who has served four times in Iraq.
ReplyDeleteA war under intense scrutiny, however our men who defend our freedom and honor, still today leave their families and safety at home to fight for democracy.
God Bless you Mi Brosher.
Hugs and Kisses,
Your Sista
dear sista: the only reason your brother is in Iraq is of his own choosing. He can not obtain a job in the USA due to his lack of education and skills. so he joins the army to get a paycheck that he could not get as a citzen. so dont give me this crap that he is a herp. but for the army he would be sleeping on a bag outside a winn-dixie.
ReplyDeleteDear 12:22: What are you some islamic extreemist? Some Hassan loving nut job. You know nothing about why Sista's brother has anwered the call to service. Now drop the keyboard and roll out the prayer rug. And while your at it move back to Egypt, Yemen or some other sand pit.
ReplyDeleteUm.... i agree that the comment was completly improperwas so is urs. Its completely racist. In case you didnt know pleanty of muslims have served and died for our freedoms. Google kareem sultan khan, 6024 US servce members.are muslim are deployed.4 were buried at arlington w full honors. They fight and died for an america who refers to them as "hassans".
DeleteSomeone better tell that DUI super lawyer Blecher that he may be hot stuff in court but he looks like an idiot driving all over south beach on the stupid under powered scooter with his beenie helmut driving up on sidewalks and beeping his little horn at old ladies. The cops know about this.
ReplyDeleteI was out with my girlfriend ( a certified courthouse hottie by the way) at SET on Saturday night when this moron comes by on his scoooter beeping and screaming and I asked her- "Isn't that guy a lawyer from the building?"
ReplyDeleteLet me intercede here on behalf of a distinguished attorney. There is no way he is running around South Beach on a scooter acting like a lunatic. It is well known that much like the fake Lee Harvey Oswald that surfaced at the Soviet Embassy in Mexico, there are fakes of this lawyer running around South Beach trying to ruin his reputation.
ReplyDeleteIt's an international conspiracy much like an onion. When you peel it you get to another layer and you cry.
May God bless our Veterans.
ReplyDeleteThis is the traditional holiday post-
ReplyDeleteDUDES- where is everyone? I had a case today.
It is nice to honor our veterans. But to get a real flavor of the war from an infantryman's perspective in WWI, I suggest Paul Fussell's classic The Great War and Modern Memory. A bit heavy with poetry and literature but a great read on the horrors of war from a totally non ideological perspective. And from a WWII point of view, try Fussell's The Boys' Crusade. You will come away from both of these books realizing that not every one involved in that conflict behaved honorably.
ReplyDeleteRump, you should not have allowed 12:22 am to post such a hateful and ignorant message.
ReplyDeleteI am assuming that "Sista" is an attorney or works in the criminal justice field. For her to post a sentimental message on this Veteran's Day is heartwarming.
12:22 am's (you need to get a life posting such negativism at that hour) posting was not a form of relevant editorial but just a hateful rant. Why post it on a "law" blog?
12:22 a.m., there are plenty of people that were not given bountiful opportunities growing up and the military gave them direction. The military promotes itself as being a form of "opportunity". Some of the finest people that ever walked this earth emerged out of the military.
I do not agree with the current state of the war but I am keen enough to recognize that if our military wasn't operating overseas, chasing down terrorists, we probably would have been victimized by more terrorist attacks.
After 9/11, the economy slowed down, especially for criminal defense attorneys. 12:22 am, as you use today as a "vacation" day and enjoy yourself, remember it's guys like sista's brother that allow you such a privelege.
Well done Rump. Kinda makes complaining about standing in line at REGJC a little trite.
ReplyDeleteAs too 12:22 they fought and died so that you could write, think and speak idiotic thoughts like the one you wrote here. Do you have any idea how many of your neighbors have realitives stationed in combat zones overseas?
Thank you to past, present and future military personal for giving so much for the rest of us.

Today, I would like to send a special thanks to my brave brother, who has served four times in Iraq.
ReplyDeleteThe difference this year, is he prepares to learn how to fly the
C-27, after serving his country in flying the C-130 and the A-10 Warthog. His return to Iraq is imminent.
Hugs and Kisses Mi Big Brosher,

ReplyDeleteScott= I am extremely uncomfortable with not publishing comments because i disagree with them. I have a few rules. Beyond those rules I feel obliged to let the comments up, and I rely on well reasoned responses like yours to deal with the stupid stuff. The bottom line is that more we shine the harsh light of truth and reality on morons, the less appealing their message is. The more we try and suppress it, the more forbidden and thus the more appealing it may become.
ReplyDeleteWednesday, November 11, 2009 4:19
Sista and others: don't let 12:22 get a rise out of you. Unfortunately, this blog is plagued by idiots who think that anonymously provoking others some how is clever and/or funny. The vast majority of us GREATLY appreciate the service our soldiers provide. Who cares what the moron who posted that thinks.
ReplyDeleteI hope your brother returns safely.

I am deeply touched by the kindness of you who chose to defend me in 12:22's attack of my dedication to my brother.
The good of many, outweighs the ignorance of one.
My brother will enjoy reading your posts and be humbled by your support.
Special thanks to Rumpole for his posts on these special military days. I often can not keep up with the day to day readings of JBB, but I visit on these days when your posts have so much personal meaning.
With my sincerest thanks and gratitude to all.
Angela
PS - My brother is a licensed pilot who received his undergrade from a reputable institution, and is one of many in my life who set aside lucrative careers to defend our country's honor. Although I believe in the importance of education, most know and understand a person's worth is measured by their character and not their education.
Thank you to your brother and all those who sacrifice to keep us safe.
ReplyDeleteI didn't publish the 9:55:00 pm post (someone else used my tag), but wish I had. I agree with the sentiments.

RUMP:
ReplyDeleteHere's a suggestion. When people go off topic on posts like this honoring those who give so we can live, can you save their comments and post them under another heading? Perhaps something like "idiots who are too self centered or mean spirited to appreciate our vets"? Then you wouldn't have to censor their stupidity and the rest of us can choose to ignore their nonsense.
BTDT
they have also made a JB Scooter sighting. Cant figure out why he was wearing the beenie helmut while walking into the "Build a Bear Store" on West. Also, whats with the Dora the Explorer basket?
ReplyDelete12:22
ReplyDeleteYou are an ass. These men and women risk their life and their familys future for OUR country. We could not be free to argue over this bullshit w/out them.
My grandfather was oversees in the US Army in WW 1, his son, my uncle, was in the pacific in the US Navy in WW 2 ( he help re-build the airfield at Tinimin), Daddy was in Korea.
Thanx for all the loyal service to the Men and Women who wear the Uniform of the USA.
D. Sisselman
ps as an aside , I believe in a modified Dream Act for illegal aliens: enlist and get an automatic green card and your family gets TPS , Go to a War zone or serve 4 years and get sworn in as a citizen and your fanily gets green cards.
Couldn't have said it better. Thank you for the video and the opportunity to share our feelings.
ReplyDelete12:22 - were you dropped on your head as a baby?
I pay tribute to my dad, my uncle and all the other vets out there that suffered, and died so that I can write stupid things on this idiotic blog.
ReplyDeleteFreedom is worth the price we all pay daily.
I reposted this from last year. So the comments from last year carry with it. You all are upset with a comment from last year- read the date- 2009.
ReplyDeleteHAHA. Rump, didn't see the dates. At least I'm consistent in my sentiments, lol.

Let's go Heat! Tonight they will beat the Celtics! And you know they'll honor the veterans! Let's go Heat!

ReplyDeleteOh great, another holiday. What excuse are the fat losers in the government using to close the courthouses this time? Time for some metamucil.
ReplyDeleteIt takes a really stupid post to stand the test of time the way this one from 2009 has. Years later reader on the blog are still consistently wanting to run 12:22 out of town on a rail.
ReplyDeleteWe can only hope that the brother has returned safely, has landed a job with a fine airline, is making good bank, banging stewardesses left and right, and getting 12:22 bumped from his flights, and his baggage lost after an invasive body cavity search by a rough handed TSA agent.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Scott Saul. Rump, you don't allow posts on the health of judges or other personal matters dealing with Attorneys privacy and I think that 12:22s hateful message is worst than someone commenting on a rumor of a judge suffering from terminal cancer or an attorney who is going through a difficult personal matter.
ReplyDeleteHey Rump,
ReplyDeleteRead the article that discussed the right to carry firearms (if you have a CCF permit) in parks and Government buildings starting November 17th. This disturbs me! Emotions are running high in most courthouses, there should be exceptions for courthouses. What's your take on this?
I stand by my previous response to scott. I will not tred down that slippery slope of only posting comments I approve of. Go to the Fox news blog for that. We fout for something and our soliders does for something and that something was- among others- the freedom to express your ideas, no matter how unpopular. Even a year laterI firmly believe i am right on this. But i am open to more discussion. Peace out.
ReplyDeleteThat should be "fought for something" and " died for something"
ReplyDeleteFake Angry Gurl,
ReplyDeleteThis is one holiday worth taking time off of work. It honors those who are fighting, and have fought, for your right to post the narcisstic crap you write.
Why don't you go to the beach and work on your tan and let the rest of us, who appreciate the honor this day brings to people like my son and daughter-in-law, have a moments peace without your self-absorbant droul.
Rumpole, thank you and so many of your readers for your kind words and unwaivering support of those who serve their country. On behalf of my son, Steve and daughter-in-law, Laura, (both Captains in the USAF), I thank you.

Remembrance Day (also known as fallen on Memorial Day, Armistice Day and Veterans Day), Memorial Day is observed in the countries of the Commonwealth, at the end of World War II to remind their armed forces who have died in the line of duty.
ReplyDeleteImportant to remember the 11th time today 11/11/11, but is also the 10th anniversary of the public opening of the National Botanical Garden Memorial. Unlike the Cenotaph in London and other war monuments Memorial High 16,000 soldiers killed since 1948. In recent years, to see an increase in the number of names on the monument.
ReplyDeleteI agree with 12:22. the folks in the service today are there because they cannot get a job in civilan life, for the most part. We should honor those who fought and died in world wars and vietnam. Those were drafted in vietnam and enlisted in WW2 because our very freedom was at great risk. Much like most of the judges who are judges because they could not make a nickle in private practice. We have some on the bench who were never in a courtroom before winning an election . some were selling amway products out of their husbands office and others are career prosecutors who are unmarketable in private practice. Call it like it is. This does not apply to Stan, Emmas, Thornton, Brown and a few others.
ReplyDeleteDolphins laid a big Shumie today.
ReplyDelete12:22 and 1:00 - When was the last time you put your life on the line for another? Posters on this blog can take pot shots at attorneys, judges & even politicians from anonymity and feel justified, but no one with any stones would disrespect our servicemen and women on Vererans Day.
ReplyDeleteIrena Sendler
ReplyDeleteDuring WWII, Irena Sendler, got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ulterior motive.
Irena smuggled Jewish infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried. She also carried a burlap sack in the back of her truck, for larger kids.
Irena kept a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.
The soldiers, of course, wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.
During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.
Ultimately, she was caught, however, and the Nazi’s broke both of her legs and arms and beat her severely.
Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she had smuggled out, in a glass jar that she buried under a tree in her back yard.
After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived and tried to reunite the families.
Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.
In 2007 Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize. She was not selected. Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.
Later another politician, Barack Obama, won for his work as a community organizer for ACORN.

I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example? Why, revenge. The villany you teach me, I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.

ReplyDeleteThe problem is that his and other conservative's rhetoric , including statements by average rank and file Repubs makes that statement SO believable.
The problem is that, that statement is consistant with their philosophy and
THAT is frightening.
I will Never Forget.
Sorry, having met / seen survivors of the camps, I dont trust Conservative Christians who talk like that cause they brought us the Holocaust.
"The idea that the Crusades and the fight of Christendom against Islam is somehow an aggression on our part is absolutely anti-historical. And that is what the perception is by the American Left who hates Christendom. ... What I'm talking about is onward American soldiers. What we're talking about are core American values." Rick Santorun
ReplyDeleteDS: really - the military deserves our "thanx"? Do you really want to talk like a 12 year old girl when offering gratitude for people who put their lives on the line for this country? Your posts are so sad it's like they are a cry for help. Every now and then you say something worthwhile, but then even broken clocks are right twice a day. You are a nice guy but you just dig yourself into a ditch when you offer such stupid posts.
ReplyDeleteRump,
ReplyDeleteBased on the Petreus affair, isn't it clear that Holder and Bobby three sticks have to step down for their gross mismanagement?
Rumpole - do you agree that "meat is murder"? I'm considering becoming a vegan.
ReplyDeleteI went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
ReplyDeleteThe publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.
I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.
Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.
We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.
You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

Rick Santorum is the poster boy for the fall of the Republican Party. The GOP leadership has gone so far off the reservation that it has alienated the middle class Republicans. How have we allowed the "nut jobs" to be the face of our party, a party that, historically, has been socially liberal but fiscally conservative. Since when has your religious views determined what is best for the people of the United States? We, the center of the GOP must put these zealots back on the sidelines and use some commonsense as to what is best for the majority of the citizens of the US. The election was not so much an endorsement for Pres. Obama as it was a statement against the GOP and its religion in politics position.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the uproar over Petreus.
ReplyDeleteI thought we all learned 13 years ago that such "affairs" are purely a private matter, solely between Petreus and the people directly involved. Any mention of some potential for blackmail is absurd, and politically-driven.
Now, it's time for General Petreus to get back to work for the American people.

ReplyDeleteI knew a simple soldier boy
ReplyDeleteWho grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.
In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
No one spoke of him again.
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.
I wish to thank all the veterans, like my dad, who risked their lives so that I can sit here safe and secure.

I always like reading this annual post, till I remember this is the comment section where Sisselman writes that "Conservative Christians... brought us the Holocaust".
ReplyDeleteAs someone trying to position himself in these comments as The Guy Who Knows History, maybe he ought to learn to read a history book? Or just learn to read?
It's stunning to me that out of his ignorance he still feels comfortable making a public statement like that, whose falsity is so easily verifiable. And about something so crucially important. And with no appreciation for the very low irony that his intention seems to be promoting tolerance.
PDs in Broward were fired for calling Palestinians "cockroaches", even though I can't imagine the odds are good they'd ever represent a Palestinian.
I don't doubt that quite a few men in ROC Court, however, might identify as Christian, or conservative - be they black, white, or spanish.
If you were them, wouldn't it suck to have the court appoint you a lawyer that thinks, despite all facts, that your faith was the same as Nazism? And your liberty depends on this lawyer? Scary as shit.
