The courthouse is a mess. Long lines. Bad vibes. Low morale. Exploding calendars.
I can think of only one solution. In this time of crisis, a real leader is needed. A man of respect. A judge of the highest caliber. A Judge of the people, the law, and the post office.
A Miami federal courthouse will officially be named after a popular deceased judge known for his rulings desegregating Miami schools and championing the rights of homeless people and Cuban and Haitian boat people.
The courthouse now known as the "Tower Building" will be officially renamed the C. Clyde Atkins United States Courthouse at a ceremony Jan. 28 outside the courthouse. It is the last of four Miami federal courthouses to be named after a federal judge.
Atkins, who died in 1999, was a judge in the southern district of Florida from 1966 until his death at 84 and served as chief judge from 1977 to 1983.
He was nominated to the bench by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Markus can't comment on it, so I will let you know the latest on the gag order:
"Lawyers protesting a strict gag order in the so-called Liberty City terror case have taken their fight to a federal appeals court, with an emergency motion filed Wednesday Jan. 23. Attorneys Scott Srebnick and David O. Markus argue the gag order imposed by U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard violates free speech protections because it prevents a man jurors found not guilty from defending his reputation or criticizing authorities who are seeking to deport him. Lyglenson Lemorin was acquitted Dec. 13 of four terror-related charges after a two-month trial. Federal prosecutors have endorsed the order, calling it necessary "to protect the rights of the accused to a fair trial by unbiased jurors." Though gag orders are not uncommon in high profile cases, Lenard's order has drawn attacks from free speech advocates. They say it goes too far because it covers people not directly involved in the Miami retrial, such as Lemorin's immigration lawyers."
As county and state employees (PDs, ASAs, clerks, and judges) we demand the right to work no more than five hours a day. We demand the right to a 90 minute lunch. We demand the right to be home at 3pm on Fridays (sorry clerks- I know you're under the thumb on this one) and finally, we demand the right to have our mediocre job performance applauded.
In a wide ranging interview given to Le Monde and published tomorrow, Miami super Attorney talks about OJ (he'll be convictied. "Galanter is the worst trial lawyer I have ever seen.") His involvement with Heath Ledger ("I was warning everyone"); the Republican Presidential Primary; and why he'll never run for judge.
Rumpole and your careful readers may recall about a year ago I posted information regards Jacl Utsick a promoter in Miami who stole millions from investors. I reported about why he was never charged in the case. I knew at the time that this was a huge ponzi scam but no one took action. KFR whats up?
Now on January 18, 2008, the appointed receiver (aka paid under the table by Jack Utsick) is claiming to investors (after of course collecting millions in legal fees) that it is a ponzi scam. I told this blog last year what it was (Hello KFR...) ponzi scam like no other.
The claim is that good old Jack is cooperating and is a good gem of a pal. Tell that to the hundreds of investors who lost life savings to a scam.
I saw Joely Denaro doing something rather smart in court the other day. And then I realized that Bill Barzee had been doing that for years. And it occurred to me that Bill has mentored Joel to the point where JD is now a fine lawyer in his own right. And right then and there I realized why Bill Barzee would be a great choice for Public Defender.
There's gonna be some big lawsuits over this.
ReplyDeleteSOMEBODY CALL THE Q!!!!!!!!!!
