RUMPOLE ENDORSES VICKI DEL PINO FOR COUNTY COURT.

UPDATED:

Judge Martin Shapiro is retiring and Joel Jacobi runs against Vicki Del Pino. Memo to Judge Shapiro: That large sign you have in your courtroom informing pro se litigants that a withhold of an adjudication is not a conviction is wrong. It induces people to accept resolutions by giving them false information. You should take it down.

Rumpole endorses Vicki Del Pino. She has demonstrated her considerable ability by her patience and demeanor as a traffic magistrate. We have much less knowledge about Mr. Jacobi. If, as he told the Herald, that 20% of his practice is indeed pro bono, then we know what that feels like.

This is not an endorsement criticizing Mr. Jacobi's ability to be a Judge, but praising what we know about Ms. Del Pino. We think she is a great choice for voters on September 5.

No one even noticed we were gone, did they?

Update: We really thought we used to see Ms. Del Pino in the REGJB as an ASA but several alert readers told us we were wrong. We still are endorsing her.

  2. you spelled her name wrong in the title, and i dont think she was a prosecutor, was she?

this was a race you should have stayed out of. You endorsed the most-least qualified in this race.

  3. I can't take these judicial races anymore. The candidates are all terrible, would _______________________________ please run?

  4. "Trialmaster" wrote about Mike Samuels: "although his tactics against kevin [Emas in a past election] were not admirable [in that he had printed ads saying that he could not be trusted because he had represented "criminals" as a defense attorney], after all, it is poltics".

Sorry "trialmaster", but as a defense attorney, some "politics" are too below the belt for me to just ignore it, especially when it is done in such a mean-spirited and disgusting manner.

  5. THE CAPTAIN REPORTS:

While not wanting to correct my friend Rump, I do want to point out the following:

Victoria del Pino has been a member of the Florida Bar for 5 years. She started out as a CLI working for the PD's offices in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.

She has been handling mostly criminal and family court matters since then. She is a Traffic Magistrate.

    CAPTAIN OUT ................

  6. Dear 10:05
Miami political races are the greatest in the world. They political are mini wars without the violence. And that is what American politics should be.

  7. the trialmaster's rebuttal: in these judical races there really are no issues that the candidates can use. remember that whack henry ferreo who beat ted when ted asserted his constitutional rights[5th amendment].mike is a great guy and has been a good judge. and kevin made it back to the bench anyway.no harm, no foul. trialmaster has spoken.......

  8. Del Pino was married to former ASA (and the longest "C" JC. Planas). Does that tell u something about her judgment?

  11. Judge Steve Leifman is a treasure. I have known him since he was a young public defender. Our daughter Eliza Cava, age 3, joined on the campaign trail as I walked door to door for Steve in the Roads neighborhood. Steve was hardworking, idealistic, committed, effective. And he still is, only more so!

Judge Leifman has pioneered a mental health court that has made a huge difference for those struggling with serious mental illness that can cloud judgement, lead to failure to follow through with treatment, and, too often, to arrest. His national model has resulted in better care for thousands, peace of mind for family members, and reduction in needless revolving door participation in a justice system ill-prepared to deal with treatment issues.

  12. the question I have is as a PDO CLI does one have to go and get muffins and coffee for rory, weed and the rest of the 120k a year do nothing club?

question for old timers. has weed ever ever tried a case?

8 years ago i once saw rory walk into court and beat up on a hapless asa right out of law school on a slam dunk for the pds. other than cherry picking layups was he ever a trial lawyer?

  13. Is Del Pino married to JC Planas?

I love how Planas didnt even keep his three year commitment to the sao, never tried anything more than a c case, and runs around saying "once a prosecutor always a prosecutor"

  14. DJ Rumpole is hands down very funny. People may like me, people may not like the blog, but to give myself some small props: 1) I can laugh at myself; 2) When I blow it, like I did today thinking Ms. Del Pino was a former ASA, at least I admit it and don't hide it.

OK- having praised myself, here come the: "sure its easy when your anonymous" "Jerk"; "idiot who can't spell" "zzzzzzzzzzz" replies. Go ahead. I've posted them before and will do it again.

  15. Nice post about Judge Leifman by the way. Either he wins, or all of Miami loses.

  26. not sure if rory ever tried a case. i did go to training seminar a few years back upstate and he did a lecture on cross exams. he was awesome. pd's from around the state were asking about him.

as for today, does he try cases, no. he is an administrator. an he is more up to date on case law than anyone i know. when i was there, his door was always open to help with trial prep and explain new law. i dig the guy.

does KFR try cases? i hope not, she has different responsibilitites.

  40. From the SAVE Dade Website:

The SAVE Dade Action PAC endorsement process for the County Commissioner and State Representative races for the September 5th Primary Elections has been concluded and the following candidates have been endorsed:

The Christian Family Coalition has decided to do endorsements for the first time this year, as opposed to the report cards they have done in the past, and they have also adopted a policy to only offer endorsements to those candidates that agree not to accept the SAVE DADE endorsement. Formerly endorsed judicial candidate Patricia Marino-Pedraza (County Court Judge - Group 01) has opted to drop our endorsement so that she may receive the Christian Family Coalition endorsement.

SAVE Dade would like to thank the judicial candidates who turned down such offers from the Christian Family Coalition.

    County Court Judges

    Karen Mills Francis Robin Faber

    Michael J. Samuels Steve Leifman

Bonnie Lano Rippingille Bronwyn Catherine Miller

    Shirlyon J. McWhorter

    11th Circuit Court Judges

    Dennis J. Murphy Lawrence Schwartz

    Rima Catherine Bardawil

    Marie Abigail Davidson

    Marisa Tinkler Mendez

*Ms. Marino-Pedraza's opponent, incumbent Judge Shirlyon McWhorter, was not interviewed during the initial interview process because we did not hear from her in time to participate due to a change of address that occurred during the time we mailed questionnaires. Earlier this year, the Florida Legislature created several new positions for judges in Miami-Dade County. The qualifying date for these positions was after the conclusion of our initial endorsement process. The board of SAVE Dade decided to convene interview panels to interview the candidates for the newly-created positions. The board also decided to invite Judge McWhorter to participate in the endorsement process. She interviewed with us on August 9th and was subsequently endorsed. We hope you will support Judge McWhorter in her bid to retain her seat. Contributions for her and all our endorsed candidates are highly encouraged.

  41. While it is true Vicki Del Pino has not been practicing long, her opponent has few too many years under his belt as well. Perhaps something should be done with the minimum 5 years of practice rule but the issue is which one of the candidates in the race are better qualified over the other.

Ms. Del Pino has judicial experience as a traffic mag, Joel does not. Ms. Del Pino has tried numerous cases herself, Joel has not. There is no evidence other than she will be a fair judge upon her election. Rump's endorsement could not be more on target.

  42. I wish to apologize to Mr. Postman. That comment should never have been posted. A few too many glasses of chateau miami river dulled my judgment. But its removed this morning.

  43. I looked over the Carla Savola v. J.C. Planas suit and saw an administrator for Judge Farina as Treasurer for the Savola campaign: Ms. Maria Mihaic from the AOC.

Does this mean Farina is after JC Planas?

Does JC plan to ask for answers to this?

    Thus, the plot thickens!

  44. Re: Trialmaster's Rebuttal: "Kevin made it back to the bench anyway.no harm, no foul."

Sorry buddy, but the fact that the prior Gov. had the good sense to reappoint Emas does not make what Samuels did right or worthy of our endorsement. As far as I am concerned, he stole his seat on the bench and we should do everything we can do see that he is removed. This isn't basketball there Shaqmaster...
