BIZARRE CONNECTION BETWEEN POLICE SHOOTING AND DEATH OF GEORGE CHOLAKIS

Lots going on. It's either feast or famine in the blogging world.

Judge Rosa Rodriguez has called it quits. Hanging up the black robes, she resigned this week.

Judge Stuart Simons, a very well respected Dade Jurist passed away this week, his death in retirement overshadowed by the untimely death of our friend and colleague George Cholakis.
Our post referencing the election for the spot vacated by Judge Simons in 2008 is here

And then there is this...

Retired Miami-Dade homicide detective John Butchko was with George when he was stricken at the Dolphins game. Det. Butchko, an all around good guy and very good detective in his day, accompanied George from the game to the hospital where George tragically passed away.

On the way home, Det. Butchko was struck by an impaired driver who then fled the scene. It was the same driver who was stopped a few blocks away by the Miami Beach Police department. The driver attempted to flee, struck a  police officer, and then was shot and killed.

Channel Ten has been all over the story, along with video of the shooting here.

Just an awful and bizarre Sunday, one best put behind us as soon a possible.

It's Commander Butchko. CBE. Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, given for his detective work in solving the homicide of a royal british subject in the 1990's. It's an honorary term.

Evidences the goodness of George and the cops (angels) who formed a hedge of protection around him. And if you are thinking about casting that first stone, please be perfect before you do.... George gave back in his life, repeatedly... what have we done?

These deaths are sad. I'm a younger attorney (30s), and realize at some point we will just be a post on a blog/blurb in the paper, and then the world goes on.

We are only really relevant for two generations, and then totally forgotten.

Isn't it. KCBE, Knight Commander British Empire, making him Sir Butchko

Rosa Rodriguez got into office when her boyfriend (GABE) gave her an unauthorized loan to fund her campaign. She was not our finest but was far from the worst. I recently tried a case in front of her and found that she was a good trial judge. Also her staff is really friendly, unlike some of the others like Jose Rodriguez.

No, a KBE is a lower designation and allows the recipient to be addressed as a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the BE, which is a few steps below a Knighthood. The queen gives out a lot of titles that aren't knighthoods for public service to the crown. He got a KBE and that's that.

THE CAPTAIN REPORTS:

As I earlier reported, Judge Rosa Rodriguez submitted her letter of resignation to Governor Rick Scott. Judge Rodriguez' last official day in office will be October 31, 2017,

The JNC has now announced her open seat and will be taking applications. They will also be accepting applications for two open County Court seats with the recent elevation of Judge Ivonne Cuesta and Judge Laura Stuzin to the Circuit Court.

Ask yourself - who am I? Why am I doing this? What matters? Life is precious. And fleeting. Do that which brings peace.

Knighthood 101 said...

Non-Brits are only eligible for honorary knighthood — meaning they aren’t allowed to add “Sir” to their names. They do get to append the suffix “KBE” to their names. Bono, Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg and Michael Bloomberg are all technically “KBEs.” If any of them later become citizens of the realm, the honor is usually made substantive, and they are “bumped up” into real knighthood.

Thank you, Commissioner Mike Grieco for your gripping traffic reports from The Beach. You'll need to find work soon, so this is good practice.
