WHICH IS THE BEST AND WHY?

UPDATE: It's no Fluke that Georgetown University President John DeGioia defended law student Sandra Fluke (who was cursed at by rush limbaugh on his radio show last week) this way:

“She provided a model of civil discourse,” he said in a letter to the school. “This expression of conscience was in the tradition of the deepest values we share as a people. One need not agree with her substantive position to support her right to respectful free expression.”

Therein lies the difference between how an educated man (President DeGioia) and an uneducated lunk of hate spewing miasma (limbaugh) handles their philosophical differences with a courageous  female law student.

SUNDAY UPDATE: COLD FRONT ON THE WAY! Bundle up tonight as temps will dip to 50 and perhaps 45. Also, chance of thunderstorms this afternoon.  From Monday until Thursday midday temperatures will struggle to break 75, and in the evenings it will be a cool 55-60. Winter's last blast hits South Florida.
Coming Monday on your favourite blog: "The End Of Innocence".

Godfather I

Godfather II

Godfather III

Which is the best? Discuss.

Rumpole notes GFIII is underrated and never gets the credit it deserves.  Also, you haven't seen the movies unless you see them on the big screen. It makes a difference.

Never liked any of The Godfather franchises. Too overrated, too much hype.

Michael Greico was out-smarted and out-lawyered today by DCF, the police and all members of the human race.

GF II

IMO, Pachino at his best ever.

Very Important Rumpole ... Can we find out if Kenny W. has ever caught a Blue or Black Marlin? If so, which fish was a greater adversary for Mr. W?

Thank you so much. I thought I saw an article about Mr. Kenny fishing in Panama at the Tropic Star Resort with a "grander" jumping behind the Bertram 31' and Mr. Kenny tipping the mate $1000 for the assist with the gaff....

Was it him???

There was this kid I grew up with; he was younger than me. Sorta looked up to me, you know. We did our first work together, worked our way out of the street. Things were good, we made the most of it. When there were message boards on AOL we ran double dutch widow scams...... made a fortune, your father, too. As much as anyone, I loved him and trusted him. Later on he had an idea to become a fake character on a blog that was otherwise a desert stop-over for arttys on the way to the West Law site. That kid's name was Real Fake Blecher ,,,,,,, cThis was a great man, a man of vision and guts. And there isn't even a plaque, or a signpost or a picture of him on this blog. Someone put a bullet through his eye. No one knows who gave the order. When I heard it, I wasn't angry; I knew RFB I knew he was head-strong, talking loud, saying stupid things. So when he turned up dead, I let it go. And I said to myself, this is the business we've chosen; I didn't ask who gave the order, because it had nothing to do with business!

We ran a version of the double dutch in the mid 80's when I was in highschool up and down the california coast on local municipal message boards- small towns- hard working people- usually about their little league tream- the field had been locked or the grass died. The kiddies couldn't play. Always made sure to state in bold letters not to send money. Then when the scam hit we emptied their bank accts. made 30k off a small town outside Oakgrove in one week. Those were the days.

I vote for the Godfather Family Saga. It is Godfather 1&2 in chronological order with added footage that you don't even get on the DVDs. AMCOMP is playing it today in 4 parts. I highly recommend it.

RFB won't see him no more. Leave the keyboard, take the canolis.

Godfather 1. Didn't see any after that so I can't comment.

If you buy the Godfather box set, it includes Godfather I, Godfather II and a coaster.

Sophia Coppola killed Godfather III.

The first two Godfather movies were equally incredible and the dialogues and scenes can be used as a bible. Part three ,lamentably, can only be dicussed in the same sentence because it shares the same name. It was a humorless joke and not even a resemblance to the first two. Try remembering three memorable lines from three, then see how many lines you remember from the others.

GF 1. It has Brando in it and that alone makes it tops. GF 3 is underrated and that is because of that cousin love between Vinny and Michael's daughter.

Rumpole said...

First memorable line from GF3- "Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in!"

Second memorable line "call that Judge we have in miami. Pando. She'll help us out. "

"Godfather I" stands as an introduction to the Corleone family, the distinction amongst the four very different sons (I'm including Tom), the inevitable and tragic corruption of esteamed war veteran Michael and the difficulty in Don Corleone teetering between old world values and the modernization of crime. It's an excellent movie made exceptional by the development of the characters...that is why the opening and lengthy wedding scene is so crucial to the film. The joy of the movie is the development of the characters which triggers emotion in the viewer. Hence, that is why the film improves upon repeated viewings. A very similar film would be "The Deer Hunter" where director Michael Cimino also used a lengthy and meticulous character development (3 boyhood friends hanging out, hunting and a marriage) to get the viewer to truly undertstand and empathize with them so the effects of Vietnam causes all the more emotions onto the viewer.

"Godfather II" provides a very desireable explanation as to the origin of these intriguing characters (primarily Don Crleone and his assention in the world of crime) , while simultaneously offering a progression of where the characters would be going. It tells two stories at once.

They are two movies that are incompareable because the narraration is so vastly different. Part II has a faster pace and the simultanoeus stories makes for a more entertaining experience yet Part I has more emotion.

Each film is excellent, deserving of their accolades and properly packaged together as the "Godfather Saga".

To all who feel the films are overrated should just consider this... how many films are discussed 40 years after their release? You have to be pretty great to get injected into a law blog.

"Godfather III" was entertaining but not in the same league as the first two. That film resembled more of a typcial rock em/sock em crime drama of the era rather than the rich, character development of the first two.

"Godfafther III" is akin to Van Halen III... you want to hear what the band was doing, Eddie's guitar is always inviting yet Gary Cherone was not in the same league as David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar (If you knock Sammy then you don't know bout rock. Sammy kicked ass in Montrose and was super cool "Bad Motorscooter"-ing on that album). Maybe I'm digressing a bit.

The Coreleone family were criminals, bad people yet Director Coppola was able to make the audience empathize for them. That was devoid in III.

If you have any taste whatsoever you will turn down The Godfather crapfest and watch something respectful like Batman, or The Rookie.

I sat through all Godfather films 1-3 with no idea what horrible pile of poop this was going to be, I thought to myself “this could be my favorite movie”. Well, it turned out to be nothing more than the most boring piece of flying poop I’ve seen in my life. The acting is mediocre at best and the pace of the movie never changes, it’s slow slow slow. Jesus Christ, I really couldn’t care if all of the actors died in the movie since I had absolutely no interest in it. The movie too me was so boring and bland that It took me over a week to watch it since its pace is incredibly slow and it never changes. The best part of the movie was when it showed the credits and ended, I said to my self “Thank Gd this fail is over”. To sum it up don’t watch this over rated piece of crap.

It is long, boring, a lot of talking, a lot of families, names, doing “buisness”…. Did I mention that it is boring? The movie lacks a good storyline. It doesn’t matter how good the actors are if the movie is not interesting at all. There is no comedy, there is very little action, drama (here and there somebody gets killed). I had better fun watching dandruff than this.

I thoroughly disliked it, and have tried to forget it.

This movie is so long that I played it on my TV, drove across the state, and when I came back, it was still playing. Since when is a movie this long?

Great post. Too bad so many people want to engage in adolescent behavior on this site instead of focusing on the topic. Movies are great because they portray human nature in a dramatic and ironic way. Irony is what makes the world interesting from an artistic standpoint. Both I and II show professional criminals engaging in fundamentally brutal and corrupt behavior while hiding behind a veneer of respectability and a code of honor akin to the Ten Commandments. The not so subtle message (in I more so) is that the underworld is really no different from other walks of life ("Who is being naive now Kate?"). But it all breaks down in II as everyone's self interest trumps loyalty to friends and family. There are no good guys to avenge the honor of their families, etc. II's message: you live by the sword, you die by the sword. So I give it II a 10th inning come from behind 9-8 victory. As far as III, I saw it once and never want to even think about it again. It is the Heaven's Gate of mob movies.

After watching the midnight grand viewing of Project X, which will now clearly be considered the greatest film ever made, how can one even comment on GF.

Project X forever.

Brando's option of using the "voice" sort of backfires over time. While it is something that makes the character unique, it becomes annoying to the viewer over time, and deters from his performance. Had he had "voice issues" after being shot it would have worked better, but it was used from the start and got worse as the movie went along.

Next time you want to discuss trilogies Rump how about The Lord of The Rings?

Btw- another overrated film, Avatar.

@2:36-- What are you smoking-- it must be the cheap stuff esp. if you think GodFather is the Heaven's Gate of mob movies.

That honor belongs to "Goodfellas."

The high point of Godfather 3 is when Coppola's daughter is killed. The shame is that it was done in teh last scene. The gilr has no talent. The movie was awful.

Tally Ho
A cold front in Tally, seems like the Legislature has brain freeze. The Herald reports:

1.A proposal to allow random drug tests for public employees passed the House after lawmakers struck down an amendment to mandate similar tests for the governor and elected officials.

2.The Legislature appears to be friendlier than the courts. The House of Representatives passed HB 609 last week, and the bill could effectively quash the court battle and kill Miami-Dade’s program to help workers recover unpaid wages

3. A bill sponsored by Rep. Frank Artiles, R-Miami, that could save a troubled developer more than $600,000 by trumping a court case currently before Florida’s Supreme Court.Maronda Homes, a developer accused of building defective roads and drainage systems in an Orange County subdivision, is arguing in court that the state’s “implied warranty” law only applies to a building structure itself, and nothing else. Homeowners believe they should be compensated for the poorly built roads and drainage pipes in their sinkhole-riddled neighborhood.
In a 2010 case before the Fifth District Court of Appeals, a judge sided with the homeowners.
HB1013 would change state law to overrule that decision, clarifying that the state’s implied warranty provision does not extend beyond the physical structure of a home

4. The city of Miami could benefit from a change in state law that would shield it from paying $1.2 million in property taxes for parking garages near the new Miami Marlins stadium.

No layoffs but plenty of change at Miami-Dade Police .

Two crime-fighting task forces have been dismantled and dozens of officers transferred to help cope with a shrinking budget.

Some people still think Italians are all criminals.

Did a meth case in Federal court a few years ago. I am a lawyer with a very Italian sounding name who doesn't do many Federal trials... guess who!

Client's first name was Angel. He was not involved in the deal but, others were and said he was so they indicted him. Very weak case.

Prosecutor was a nice guy but, said in closing, "He's no Angel...." "Remember when the bad guys were easy to spot... they had suits, Italian names and ran the mafia..."

I objected and then discussed my dad who fought in WWII for out side and how I came from a decent family of Italian Americans etc....

Prosecutor was black. What gall. What was I supposed to say after that.... something like "remember when all criminals were black? I didn't.

Jury out 3 hours and then, not guilty.

Prosecutor apologized later.

Loved all of the Godfather movies but, trust me, Italians are not like that. They are funnier.
