JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE TO GO BACK INTO THE COURTROOM

Jaws was released 50 years ago today.  It was, in our memory and experience, the first summer blockbuster movie.

People have their favourite lines, like "you're gonna need a bigger boat" said by Roy Scheider when he first sees the shark.

But in our humble opinion Robert Shaw as Quint stole the movie.  Many point to Quint's Indianapolis speech as their favorite. "You know the thing about a shark is that he has lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a dolls eyes... I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So eleven hundred men went into water. Three hundred and sixteen come out, the sharks took the rest. June the 29, 1945..."

But this scene and his speech is our favorite. "This shark. Swallow ya whole. A little shakin, a little tenderizin and down you go...I'll find him for three. But I'll catch him and kill him for ten..."

Robert Shaw was just an amazing actor.

  1. It’s just a perfect movie. Early deaths of people unknown to the audience by a malevolent force unseen. Three unlikely heroes who don’t get along. Lead character - chief Brody - scared. Secondary villain - the town’s mayor. Final confrontation. Hero killed. Quint. Unlikely ending. Shark blown up.
Simple formula but not really done until this movie.

  3. I remember, as a kid, going to the theater to see that during the summer when it came out. That movie was a game-changing, very big deal. It was so impactful towards the audience and it kept me out of the ocean for a while. That was back in the day when a movie could truly be an event . 8:20 AM, fyi, there was NO real shark in the movie, it was "Old Man Smithers" masquerading as a shark...and he would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those meddling kids

  5. Fun Jaws trivia fact. When they cut open the Tiger shark at the dock to show that it’s not the shark attacking people Hooper pulls out a Louisiana license plate. In a homage to Spielberg’sn favorite movie series, the first numbers on the plate are 007.

  10. Hey Rumpole. QUESTION TIME:

    1. Were prosecutors like Abe Laeser, David Waksman and the like truly masters of the courtroom? Did they “WOW” jurors or were the facts of their cases so violent and tragic that they had the advantage over a “remain silent” defendant?

    2. Who was the very best prosecutor that you ever went against - or maybe worked with - as far as trial skills, charisma with a jury and with integrity?

    3. On the defense side - was Roy Black, Ed Carhart, Ed O’Donnell, Larry Handfield and the like truly legendary in court? What was their quality that made them “great?”

    4. Best trial court judge in the 11th judicial circuit? Best Appellate judge in the Third? Why?

  12. I recall watching this film when opened in theaters. Loved the pounding theme music invoking a shark attack. At the time I got a foot-long plastic shark to prank people. Great fun leaving it in a drawer or other place where it would be found, then humming that shark doom theme.

  13. I like Kathy but a regime change is necessary. Her chiefs are just corrupt.
