A NEW PM

COMING MONDAY- You asked for it...you got it. TALK TO ME GOOSE

Friday saw an extraordinary and yet orderly change of power in the world's oldest democracy. In England, Labour made a strong comeback after fourteen years of being the opposition. Once the results were in, PM Rishi Sunak was out, and Kier Starmer was in. No storming Parliament. No protests. No accusations of dead Venezuelan dictators fixing voting machines. No frivolous lawsuits.  No former mayors with dye running down their face holding ridiculous press conferences making outrageous lies (remember his formation of an "elite strike force" of lawyers to challenge the election? They lost every case, were not elite, and made our country a joke to the world).

In a carefully orchestrated process that is hundreds of years old, Sunak went to the Palace Friday and told King Charles III he was resigning. The King accepted his resignation. Shortly thereafter (and in the past it has sometimes been less than ten minutes) the new leader -Starmer- arrived- and in a ceremony known as the "Kissing of the Hands" (although no hands are kissed) the King greets his new PM and asks him to form a government. The new PM agreed, and then they chatted for a few minutes and arranged a time for their weekly luncheon.  During that interregnum (you Desantis drones can Google that word) the King is the sole leader of Britian.

Meanwhile the departing PM returned one last time to number 10 Downing where he was briskly moved out of his home within a day of losing the election. He made a departing speech and left. The new PM then showed up with his family and was greeted by the permanent staff with polite applause.  And a new government leads England.

We may be proud of our democracy and american exceptionalism blah blah blah but exceptionalism is earned every day and we have not been exceptional for some time now. But England, dear England, always has been exceptional, especially in the worst of times. And now more than ever, the world needs the stability of England as we stare into the precipice of potential destruction of our country- rent by a dumb megalomaniac.

Which reminds us of when Benjamin Franklin was questioned by a socialite shortly after declaring independence.  "So what do we have now?" she asked him. "A monarchy or a republic?"

"A republic if you can keep it" Franklin replied.

Indeed.

  4. Nothing like blind "progressivism" O.K. to use the courts to try and imprison your opponents. O.K. to use your Justice Dept to protect your party leader's drug addict son from charges of bribery and violation of laws dealing with serving as undisclosed foreign agents,
By the way, there is also the small matter of the deal the colonies made when they formed our republic, which was a deal to keep big states from ruling the roost. The best part about you Rumpole is that you are shameless in your partisanship. I am surprised that you did not name drop a few of your favorite hotels, "clubs," and restaurants in London.

  6. Rump, how come you haven't said anything about the Young Thug’s trial and all that f-up stuff, including that ex-parte meeting? Those two prosecutors act like they were trained by MVZ and that judge acts like the hugging diva in Broward. Brian Steel is my hero; he reminds me of many of the hard working, no-nonsense criminal defense lawyers in Miami.

  7. It’s Sunday morning at the SAO bunker at One Rundle Way. A small coterie of lawyers huddle in the cold dark futuristic atmosphere A few hold Starbucks cups while one sips a green drink. There are a bank of televisions built into the dark cherry wood paneled wall.
A forms flash on the screen to be read followed by discovery responses as the lawyers review and approve them.
An a form appears on a case where one neighbor hit another with a broom. 🧹. Then the discovery response.
“WaIt!” Says a voice in the darkened room. “The Asa provided the ring video of the incident showing the victim wasn’t really hit at all”
“Who did that ?” Another voice booms from the background

A picture of a lawyer appears on one of the screens and the room lets out a collective groan.

“ she’s done this before “ one person says.
“She Nolle pressed the charges against that teacher accused of theft when the defendant provided receipts for the items she was accused of stealing” someone else says while shuffling papers.

The star chamber gets quiet for a moment and then there is a flurry of activity.
“Add the usual incidents to hee personnel file. Frequently late. Leaves early most days. Complaints from judges about unprofessional conduct”

“Fired” the same voice booms from the back and the others murmur their agreement.

“That’s two for today” the voice booms. “We will root out this corruption and lawyers obsessed with being fair. Let’s find two more before lunch arrives “

The activity in the room continues as cases are reviewed and lawyers careers hang in the balance.

And watching over it all is a large portrait of their State Attorney hanging on a wall at the back.
“Wise Dear Leader” is the caption under the portrait.
