Texas has had it shares of W's, including POTUS 43 George Walker Bush.
But there's a new W in San Antonio, and he was the first pick in the 2023 NBA draft- Victor Wembanyama.
This Guy is Talllllllll |
And the San Antonio Spurs have him, drafting him as the first pick Thursday night, despite threats to seek an injunction before Judge Cannon in the SDFL under the "The Miami Heat Must Always Have The Best Player In The League" rule.
But alas the draft went off as planned, and Heat fans are reduced to waiting for a game seven when they will stream into the arena wearing their silly white shirts and pretending to be life-long fans, much like Dolphin fans, who last went to a game when Ed Newman was blocking Alan Page.
Think about that for a second. Alan Page was a member of the famed "Purple People Eaters" Minnesota Vikings defense. He retired in 1977 and was later elected to the college and pro football hall of fames. He went on to a career in law and served as a Justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court.
Ed Newman played in the NFL from 1973 to 1984 (playing in three super bowls - 1973 (win), 1982 (loss) and 1984 (loss) ). IF there is film of Ed Newman blocking Alan Page in the 1973 super bowl, when the Dolphins beat the Vikings, and Newman was a rookie, then it may be the ONLY time in profession sports that two future judges played against each other.
These are the kinds of things we think about that make us the hall of fame blogger we are.
Meanwhile, we have neglected to comment on the NBA finals. Your Miami Heat lost.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Lot of meat to chew on here. The list of athlete/intellectuals is not as short as you let on. I offer up Jerry Kramer, Bill Bradley, Jim Bouton, Mike Marshall (he of Doger releif pitcher fame). Dave Meggysely(They Call It A Game, the '70's counter-cultural classic from a an NFL linebacker about drugs in the league), Ken Dryden, the great Montreal goalie of the 1070's who was a lawyer, and finally, my personal favorite, Pete Gent. North Dallas Forty, the hilarious novel about life in the NFL. Note these are all old timers like Page and Newman. Times have changed.
ReplyDeleteRumpole, the shot about the Miami Heat losing says more about your bitterness than anything. It was fun while it lasted. We got our entertainment value. So the the Heat lost. What of it? No big deal.
ReplyDeleteHe ain’t no Rony Seikely!
ReplyDeleteHe is prone to many bone fractures. He might be on the bench injured very quickly playing in the NBA. Could be a bust. Like MANUTE BOL.
ReplyDelete9:35 true- both worth the risk. Could be Kareem who can shoot 3s and his defense from anywhere is amazing. The guy is blocking three pointers. He can change the game.
ReplyDelete6:59 I was just saying in the history of sports have two future judges ever played against each other? And I dare say what Newman and Page did in the Super Bowl has never been done and may never been repeated. Would love someone to scour youtube film of the game and see Newman throw a block on Page. Would be amazing
Dude’s legs look a little brittle to me. I hope he works out, but there are some big guys pushing each other around on the courts now….and 270 lbs on a 6’8 guy is a lot more bulk thank on a 7’5 bean stalk.
ReplyDeleteRump how about those historic NBA Thompson twins, Amen and Ausar, going back to back 4th and 5th to Houston and Detroit, respectively. My grandson graduated from Pinecrest and played weenie basketball with them when he was 10. When the Thompson’s are heading to the HOF, my boy’s claim to fame will be “Amen dunked on me.” Have a lovely weekend all.
ReplyDeleteRump, thought we’d hear from you on Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg’s cage match. As someone who knows how to fight with words, would you please put the genius back into my boy. Love, Maye
ReplyDeleteI love this podcast. Where can I listen live to it? What time? Spotify?

Rumpole. I predict that Russia will have a civil war and internally overthrow the present government. The Wagner Group and terrorist freedom fighting rebel groups will kill Putin. Thoughts?
ReplyDeleteWhen I see, a coco and hanzy post, I skip. Boring.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we can get HANZY to fight Zuckerberg?
ReplyDeleteRump: we need your hot take on the turmoil in Russia!
