EASTER SUNDAY

It's an Easter and Master's Sunday, smack in the middle of Passover. Three religions meeting on a spring Sunday.

Query: How much does religion affect your life? Does it play a role in the career decisions you make? Does it affect the legal strategies you employ?

Humans seek and find spirituality in the simplest places. We often see clients in the deepest despair turn to religion when they have nothing left (and before they experience the miracle of Rumpole slowly arising to begin cross examination). It is human to cling to some hope. When all hope seems lost, the promises of miracles sustain us.

And we have seen miracles. Just recently we saw a DeSantis appointed under 40 circuit judge grant a motion to suppress.  It is not Jesus arising from the beyond, or the parting of the Red Sea for the fleeing Israelites, or Nicklaus's charge at 15, 16, and 17 on Sunday at Augusta in 1986 ending with the go-ahead putt at 17 and Vern Lundquist exclaiming "yes sir!", but it is pretty darn close.

Enjoy your holiday(s).

  1. That second at 15 is tricky tricky tricky. And 18 is playing verrrrrry long today with the cold weather. Should be a great final 18 rump de la rump.

  2. Blog favorite you know who, holding court at the 15/16 seating area. Waving a big (unlit) stogie, and reminiscing about all the great golf he has seen over the years. When they show the 15 and 16 you can see him in the crowd.

  3. Keep your eye on Matsuyama for a late charge today and a fav for 2024. Got love paddy Cantlay today keeping it close. And don't even get me started on the sweet swing of Hovland. Been watching him since he was low amateur at Pebble Beach and Augusta. Guy can bring it.

Whddya say Rump? -13 wins it; -12 a playoff?

  8. The Captain Retorts:

I had the privilege on walking the hallowed grounds at Augusta National a few years ago for the Masters. I was there on both Saturday and Sunday. Nicklaus' 1986 charge did not begin on 15, it actually began with a birdie putt on Number 9. Jack proceeded to birdie three in a row (9-10-11), but his charge was taken slightly off line on number 12 when his par putt from seven feet went slightly off line when it hit a spike mark. Nicklaus said that that bogey actually was a good thing because it was a slap in the face and forced Jack to focus even more heading to the 13th tee.

On the par 5 13th, Jack went for the green in two and two-putted for the birdie. It was at Number 15 then the charge went into overdrive. Nicklaus hit a 210 yard second shot to 12 feet and he made the putt for eagle. If that wasn't spectacular enough for the gallery, he put the icing on the cake with one of the best shots of his career on the par 3 16th when he knocked it to within two feet (nearly acing the hole). When he hit the tee shot, his son and caddie Jackie Jr said "it looks good" as the ball was sailing across the lake - Jack replied "oh it is". He admitted that he was rarely that cocky in his career. At the same time Jack was forging into the lead at 46 years old on a Masters Sunday, Seve Ballesteros was playing behind him and on 15. Jack was standing on the 16th green when he heard the groan from the gallery at 15. He knew exactly what happened. Seve had hit his second shot into the lake while attempting to hit the par five in two. Jack closed out his competition with that famous birdie putt on 17 to take the outright lead. He shot 30 on the back nine and carded a 65 for the day to finish 9 under. He won his sixth green jacket - a record that may never be broken; (El Tigre has five). He became the oldest winner of the Masters at age 46.

  9. Zero religion. There is no objective evidence (which is to say observable, measurable, and repeatable evidence) of invisible dragons. http://people.whitman.edu/~herbrawt/classes/110/Sagan.pdf

  10. Golf is a good walk spoiled. Played by out of shape fat guys who struggle to walk 18 holes and can not carry their own bag.

  12. Golf? It used to be the most boring "sport" on television, but now can glory in the fact that it the "most boring" title has not been awarded to soccer.
