RUMPOLE IN COURT

This morning, we rose, completed our morning ablutions, donned a new suit despite the 90 degree weather, freshly shinned shoes, left our gentleman's bowler that we use for legal matters in London on the shelf, and drove to lot 26 where we parked our semi-luxurious vehicle in a nicely empty lot- the continued payments for a spot in lot 26 being our one non-concession to covid19. We will wear a mask in court, but you can pry our Lot 26  parking card from our hands only when we are retired and living in Sun City Arizona.

Once in the old gray lady, we made the rounds, being suitably deferential to those who wear black for a living. We scoffed at prosecutors who have "victim wants max" tattooed on their foreheads, and we charmed clients and their families with our legal bravado and quick wit.

It was, in all aspects, a part of our life that we lived every day since before many of the judges and prosecutors who surreptitiously read this blog, were born.

Then came covid19, and the world will never be the same.

And maybe that's how it should be. Covid has moved an aching and creaky and somewhat ancient -in thought if not age- judiciary into the 21st century.

Long Live Zoom Court.

BTW in case you're keeping count, on Wednesday at least four people were killed at an Oklahoma hospital mass shooting.

You know the difference between the USA and Ukraine? The citizens of Ukraine know when they're under attack and can flee the war zone. In the USA every city, every public place, every school is a potential war zone.

  1. Civil court and one of the terrific complex business division judges is strongly considering a “no tie” rule for male lawyers appearing in court in June, July and August. That is the right thing to do in Miami during a hot summer. Thoughts Rumpole? Does that diminish the “respect” factor needed in the courthouse?

  2. I heard Blumstein has put his sailor billboards up again. He is misleading the public again and doing so contrary to the rules regarding same. Specifically, the DoD states “4:3.2.1. Use or allow the use of photographs, drawings, and other similar media formats of themselves in uniform as the primary graphic representation in any campaign media, such as a billboard, brochure, flyer, Web site, or television commercial. For the purposes of this policy, “photographs” include video images, drawings, and all other similar formats of representational media.”
Blumstein is a bad judge that uses the same uniform he is violating the rules with, on billboards, to trick the voters. Even Teresa Maria May be more qualified than him.

  5. HEY MIAMI HEAT FANS
    CELTICS 120 WRRIORS 108
First home loss of the playoffs for the warriors.
Home playoff loss...now why does that sound so familiar to Miami Heat fans?
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Except there really aren't but a few dozen heat fans right now. The rest are gone until the playoffs next year. What a bunch of front-running losers you all are.

But you love a winner so repeat after me...

  9. Blumstein is just one of many who had zero qualifications or trial experience to run in hopes of a bigger paycheck. He is an idiot but that seems to be the standard that he, EL APONTE and the new female now Hispanic surname who made 55K out of a post office law firm site. The same applies to Little Areces who never practiced any meaningful law and his mother who sold Amway out of her husband's law office. Now they don the black robes and had absolutely no trial of legal experience. And so it goes in the 11th.

    1. While you are 100% right about Blumstein, El Aponte and the UPS store candidate, Areces has been an excellent judge. He reviews everything in advance of hearings, reads the caselaw cited and other cases on the same issues, and makes his rulings based on the case law. He respects attorneys calendars and is always respectful. He is all we can ask for out of a judge. Blumstein on the other hand is a horrible judge and his billboards in violation of the DoD show you all you need to know about his actual values. I just hope he goes back to wearing that uniform and not the robe.

  10. Does he still do the Pledge of Allegiance? Is he in civil now?

  11. Why so much hatred for Ramiro Areces? Why does it matter he had little trial experience before he joined the bench? I'll take him any day over 90 percent of other judges. Other than De la O and Hersch, I take Areces.
