JUDGE ROBERT SCOLA TO TAKE SENIOR STATUS

DOM broke the story that Judge Scola is taking senior status as of October 31 this year.  2023. OMG HE'S TAKING SENIOR STATUS 2023 ABOUT 500 PEOPLE WROTE TO TELL US THAT. IT'S 2023 GOT IT? NOT 2022. OK? IS THAT CLEAR??

We pause to think that Janet Reno ran a pretty great office with great prosecutors, many of whom went on to become great judges.

Bob Scola is at the top of that list. Along with Lenny Glick, Rob Pinero, Jerald Bagley, Jackie Scola, Marilyn Milian (whose TV career short-circuited what would have been a brilliant judicial career), Tom Peterson, Ted Mastos, Sam Slom, Gerry (Hawk) Hubbard, Leslie Rothenberg, Katie Pooler, Johnny Kastrenakes, Bill Altfield,  along with many others.

Who are we missing? Reno era prosecutors who went on to become Judges?

  1. How could you possibly add Sam Slom to that list? The others were great trial lawyers and great judges. Sam was a collection agency for the County.

  2. Many may not like who you put on that list for political reasons but, Sam Slom? Really? What did he ever do?

  3. Dan Markel murder trial updates:

Defendant Magbuana looking increasingly fucked. De Coste and Kawass doing everything they can to divert attention, but the state should get a conviction here.

Ace up the defense sleeve is that they will presumably call Magbuana's baby daddy and convicted hitman to say she knew nothing about his activities. However the state indicates they have a jail call between Kawass and baby daddy that seems to make the defense nervous. They are trying to argue it away.

Did Kawass say improper things? Did baby daddy make statements that would preclude calling him as a witness to testify otherwise? Would the defense risk censure on behalf of their client's case? Big questions....

But the real question is -- once Magbanua gets convicted, does she *finally* flip on the Adelson family, including FL attorney Wendi? Magbanua's got something like 7 years credit, her conviction would be something like conspiracy. Maybe she takes an adjudication and walks right out to her kids, ready to sing.

    In any case, RIP Danny.

  4. I think you are being a bit too generous when you include Rothenberg in the mix. Being intellectually dishonest is not a trait becoming of a great jurist.

  11. Correction: Judge Scola isn't taking senior status until October of NEXT YEAR (2023). Apparently wanted to give the President a LOT of lead time to nominate and appoint a replacement. This will be the third vacancy on the SDFL bench (Moreno and Ungaro seats still have no nominee).

  12. The Katherine Magbanua trial streaming on YouTube is very interesting on so many levels from the cast of characters to the young local attorneys fighting a valiant battle.

Truth is so much stranger than fiction.

How could the Adelsons think they would get away with this murder? What a great tragedy for those two poor little boys!

  14. Everyone's favourite cigar shoppe, way out west on Bird, is offering a Scola Macanudo in honor of the great one calling it a career. Get the DR special- made with Cuban tobacco grown under the gentle sun and shade trees of the Dominican sun. A Cuban wrapper- 3 for $75 or 5 for $100.

And don't forget the Saturday night Paella specials, served street side, 19.95 all you can eat with a complimentary store brand robusto or churchill and the Sunday dominoes tourney- $100 gift card to the winner! It's the place to be if you want to be in a place.

  15. Im just wonderin whether there is any empirical data showing that proves its cooler to be in pooler. Is the temperature in the courtroom kept lower than other courtrooms?

Is there a upgrade in the clothes the lawyers wear? Prada purses for the women and tom ford suits for the guys? Is everyone in there driving a tesla and eating at Prime Steak or Nobu and jetting off to Cabo for long weekends?
    What's the deal?

  17. Why all the sam hate? He was a good judge who led the County court criminal decision otherwise known as about 30 egos very sure that within a decade they will be on the federal bench once their genius is recognized. Plus he was the slimmest the Samest and the Sloamest and no one else can say that.

  18. What's a county court?

  19. Because Sam never gave us a break on anything. He was ASA Sam on the bench. I never saw him have any compassion. He once told a lawyer (me) to just have his client plead out a DUI even though the lawyer said his client had stage 4 breast cancer and was too ill to come to court. Yup, that woman died very shortly thereafter. He never even said he was sorry she died. Sam, you had not a care at all about anything other than the State getting money.

  20. Bill Altfield?! Maybe if you're an ASA. Rocks are smarter.
