Everyone take a deep breath. Say your last holiday greeting for the year and now move on. We do not walk around wishing each other a Happy Easter or Happy Fourth of July. We do not seem to have the same compulsion to send out "Happy Memorial Day" emails and cards as we do for Xmas, Hannukah, and New Years.
But there is something that starts at the end of November and culminates at the end of December that seems to make otherwise normal people lose their mind and walk around wishing everyone they see a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
So let's all get the HNYs out of our system and move on. It's 2022 and there is work to do.
Do you find 2022 disappointing? We do. If you asked people in 1972 what the world would be like in fifty years, we imagine there would have been lots of descriptions of flying cars, space travel for everyone (not just billionaires), an end to racism and pollution, and computers you can talk to.
Well, we do not have flying cars. There was a time in the last decade when there was more space travel in the 1960s than the 2000s, and pollution has become global warming. Racism still exists, and fringe George Wallace/John Birch society members now make up most of the Republican party. Ask Siri what time it is and you're likely to get a response like "The winner of the 1968 Kentucky Derby was Forward Pass."
Happy 2022.
For the foreseeable future (this month) Covid/Omicron is going to shut down the economy harder than Hillary Clinton and Bill Gates ever envisioned in their wildest dreams. There will be no Joe Biden/Government mandates. But when fire departments stop responding because everyone is out sick, and when the FAA doesn't have enough flight controllers healthy to staff air control towers, then you are really going to see what a Covid shutdown really looks like. Publix cannot open if there is no one to operate the registers.
And why are we certain this will occur? Did you see the 70 plus thousand stupid people in Hard Rock Stadium on Friday night for the Georgia/Michigan game? Nary a mask in sight.
Actions have consequences. And dear readers, we are going to pay the price for our arrogance and ignorance.
Stay safe. The next month is going to be a rough one.
"Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio? Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you."
Happy New Year to you too Rumpole. Any good news?? :-(

ReplyDeleteOdd case that Rump, whose blog character is a self-described Anglophile, bristles when he hears "Merry Christmas". Perchance there is something else going on there....
ReplyDeleteWell smart guy for one thing we say “Happy Christmas “ in England. So there’s that. And the unspoken allusion you are making is that I am Jewish and don’t like the celebration of a Christian holiday. Not tru. Check the blog post on Christmas. And open your eyes jackass and read. I started this rant about happy thanksgiving and took it from there.
ReplyDeleteWell, I hope Rumpole will keep track of the many illnesses and deaths which he is suggesting will occur from that 70,000 dub asses. While we are at it, shouldn't we add Joe Biden who was wearing a mask while walking his dog on the shore?
