Life is full of ups and downs. If we have learned anything in our multiple decades of existence it is these two things- 1) Do not judge a person until you have walked a mile in her moccasins; and 2) If you wait patiently by the river the bodies of your enemies will float by.
With these two thoughts in mind, and a week closing with the start of the NFL draft, we provide you some thoughts:
Rudy Giuliani: The bad- the FBI serving a search warrant for his electronic devices on Wednesday; the ugly- his press conference when black hair die trickled down his face; the bad- renting Four Seasons Total Landscaping for a press conference instead of the nearby Four Seasons (we usually stay at a Four Seasons when traveling on a case); the ugly- his scene in Borat Subsequent Movie Film where arguably he has his hands down his trousers (trousers is in danger of being lost in the English language. Here is our effort to revive it). Verdict: a bad year. BAD. Wild prediction: something bizarre like Little Pony videos are found on his devices.
Miami Dolphins: With the sixth pick in the 2021 NFL your Miami Dolphins select..De Vonta Smith, WR Alabama. With the 18th pick in the 2021 NFL draft your Miami Dolphins select....Christian Darrisaw, Tackle, Virginia Tech. In 2020 Darrisaw graded perfect in preventing sacks or hits on his QB. Not one allowed. The Fins strongly consider a RB at this spot, but there are several available in rounds 3-7 and with Darrisaw paving the way, and De Vonta Smith preventing the defense from stacking the box and stopping the run, the Dolphins future is looking GOOD. Real good. No bad or ugly here.
Judge Z. Bad month. You know the story. But you know what, it's not over until it's over. Judges are human (yes we really said that). They can learn from their (many) mistakes. A dose of humility is sometimes the right medicine to turn someone around. Ironically, this is the argument we make when we (rarely) represent someone at sentencing. Sometimes its a good thing if your audience can personally connect with your client's experience. BAD but not over and perhaps some good yet is in store. He certainly has the right counsel (David Rothman, attorney to the stars and bench, and that is a good thing).
Judge MM. BAD. Moveon.org. It's over Johnny.
Apple and Facebook. Both just announced blow-out quarters. GOOD.
India. BAD AND UGLY. The US State department just announced a level 4 alert for travelers. You cannot go. If you are a US citizen in India you must leave. Want to see what the future holds for the world unprepared for pandemics? Look at India now. Hospitals have no room. They have no oxygen or Covid19 therapeutics and crematoriums (we searched, this is the first time we used that word on the blog lo all these years of writing) are melting from the constant use. Look at India. And learn this lesson. The next Pandemic is coming and why do we feel the idiots of the world and US will be even more resistant to wearing masks and shutting down?
Rump what's the state of the Shumie? By tradition we get a SOS just before or after the State of Union address, except that one bad year the SOS was issued on July 3 which was widely criticized. So what gives? The Global Ren (a venue) empire is struggling back after a bad year. The Ren (A Wuhan venue) has been open with outdoor seating and dim sum take out for months. The Ren (A Singapore Venue) has been open as the entire island sealed shut after covid and there is little virus in Singapore. The US Ren ventures have not faired as well alas. And what about the Cigar store on the edge of the Everglades? Can't imagine in a pandemic with a virus that attacks the lungs cigar sales are up.
ReplyDeletePlease post the SOS ASAP.

ReplyDelete"Among the several candidates who have expressed interest in applying for the judges’ two seats: U.S. Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Becerra, Federal Public Defender Michael Caruso, Miami-Dade Circuit Judges Lisa S. Walsh, Tanya Brinkley and Miguel de la O, as well as Miami-Dade County Judge Ayana Harris."
What do the Vegas bookies say Rumpole? I think Brinkley has 5:3 odds, Harris 2:1, Becerra 3:1, Walsh and De La O 5:1, Caruso 100:1. None of these odds are based on merit except Caruso.
What’s the knock on Caruso? I’m not very familiar with him except to know that he heads the local Fed Defender office.
DeleteNow for some more ugly.
ReplyDeleteYou all remember Josh Duggar, famous for "19 Kids and Counting" and also diddling his own sisters? He skated on that stuff because his daddy Jim Bob kept it under wraps and waited out the statute of limitations.
Now Josh has been arrested by the Feds and is in jail with no bond. Still haven't announced what the charges are. I know the Feds like to overcharge and deny bond, but this sounds kind of serious.

How could Judge de la O not get the appointment. From what very prominent defense lawyers tell me - he is brilliant and kind and knows how to be a jurist.
ReplyDeleteI love Judge Lisa Walsh. She is first class as a lawyer and on the bench. She deserves it.
It’s time to elevate Judge Hanzman from County Court to Circuit. What is taking so long?

@8:42 - I assume that you're trolling, but on the off chance that you're not, Hanzman is a Circuit Court judge and has never, not a single day, been a County Court Judge.
ReplyDeletePlease do not select De la O, he has far too great of a judge , we need him right where he is
ReplyDeleteWhen a corrections officer passes away from COVID, we, the defense lost a member of our family.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that news.
Why are the called "correction officers". They do not correct anyone. Plus, the inmates are pretrial and presumed innocent. If that is so they do not to be "corrected" until a conviction. They should be labeled "detainment officers". Much more appropriate. Nor do they any ability to correct anyone. They are the ones who cannot get hired by any police agency or find a job in the private market. Just spend some time in the jail and that should convince anyone.
ReplyDeleteThe trialmaster,
DeleteU are a douche.
"Plus, the inmates are pretrial and presumed innocent."
ReplyDeleteSome of the inmates have already been convicted and are awaiting sentencing. Some are already convicted and sentenced but are awaiting transfer to prison. Some of them are already convicted and get transferred to another jail to face other charges. And some of them are already convicted but get remanded back to get re-sentenced.
We just finished a nice 4-day drive from Miami to Minnesota with a stop in Nashville. Downtown Nashville was a zoo, completely packed and not a mask in sight. We walked around for 10 minutes and immediately left. Some drunk kid called me a Nazi, I guess because I was the only one wearing a mask. Good luck with anything close to this being over.
ReplyDelete@9:10pm
ReplyDeleteWhy would people need to wear masks outside? 100 million US adults have been vaccinated. Presumably, a fair number of those people you saw were among the 100 million US adults who have been vaccinated. There was never a high risk of contagion outdoors anyway. Even the CDC no longer recommends masks for outdoor use among vaccinated people (and even the un-vaccinated in some circumstances).
I'm not telling you not to wear a mask - do want you like. And the kid that called you a Nazi is a moron. But seriously, enough already with the face-mask shaming (on both sides).
Get your shots (or don't - but please do) and move on.
