Join us tonight as we follows the election returns in Miami-Dade County for the eight contested judicial seats. The polls close at 7:00 PM and shortly thereafter we should be getting the numbers reported from the two weeks of Early Voting. Next, we should begin receiving Absentee Ballot numbers. And throughout the night, we shall update you on the overall numbers.

As of yesterday, a total of 178,671 voters had already cast their ballots in Miami-Dade County. (Today, on election day, an additional 118,771 voters cast their ballot); Total Turnout 21%.

Congratulations to Broward County Election's Supervisor who set a new record by posting their first returns at 8:06 PM. UPDATE: Broward up to 40% of their precincts counted as of 9:00 PM; Dade at 94%. I will never quite understand what the problem is North of the Border!
If a runoff is required in Group 14, it will take place on November 6th. Good luck to all of the candidates.

ReplyDeleteWhy do they have runoffs in judicial races but not for any of the other primary races? When I was still involved in Florida political things, the law provided for runoffs in all primary races, state and federal.

You ARE an "old timer". This is the way the law was written going back to 1983:
100.061 First primary election.--In each year in which a general election is held, a first primary election for nomination of candidates of political parties shall be held on the Tuesday 9 weeks prior to the general election. Each candidate receiving a majority of the votes cast in each contest in the first primary election shall be declared nominated for such office. A second primary election shall be held as provided by s. 100.091 in every contest in which a candidate does not receive a majority.
This is the way the law is written as of 2005:
100.061 Primary election.--In each year in which a general election is held, a primary election for nomination of candidates of political parties shall be held on the Tuesday 9 weeks prior to the general election. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes cast in each contest in the primary election shall be declared nominated for such office. If two or more candidates receive an equal and highest number of votes for the same office, such candidates shall draw lots to determine which candidate is nominated.
In a partisan race (Dems and Repubs) where there are more than two candidates, (think this year's Dem Governor's primary where there are seven candidates, included five we have heard of: Gillum, Graham, Greene, King & Levine), the highest vote getter will win the primary and represent their party in the General Election in November. No more needing 50% plus one. That only takes place in non-partisan races - like judicial races. That means no more primary election runoff in October like we used to have. Now we go from the primary election in August to the general election in November.

Men named Vasily and Leonid are choosing your judges. And make no mistake..we are making one of races a runoff because it costs your government more money for runoffs. We even may make a two person race runoff by having vote total exactly even.
So we are choosing your judges but you keep waiting in lines at polls like it matters. Oh...and you people in Aventura, you wondering why you wait in line so long today...internet problems...oh boy.

Rump, I'm here at Miller election headquarters and the scene is pure mayhem...
ReplyDeletethe lights are being dimmed, the band had stopped playing and the judge is taking the stage and ….the crowd is going crazy screaming "six more year...six more years!" and when that chant dies down a "Tom Scott Sucks Tom Scott SUcks" chant picks up....Miller starts to speak but the crowd drowns him out with cheers and he gives a big smile and has both hands up in the air ala Nixon...this is quite a scene....

Congratulations to all of winners! I’m with Del Rio in the runoff. She’s extremely hard working and deserving of the job. Espinosa is a class act, I met her recently. She is smart and hardworking; a breath of fresh air. I have no doubt that we will see more of her in the near future.

NORTH OF THE BORDER .......
Broward County had a total of 12 contested judicial races. Two of them are still too close to call:
Judge Michael Usan is currently losing to challenger Richard Kaplan by 741 votes (109,604 - 108,863).
Judge Ernest Kollra is beating challenger Alan Schneider by 919 votes (109,484 - 108,565).
Broward County Election's Supervisor reported receiving 5,000 absentee ballots in the mail that arrived on Tuesday. Until they are counted, it will be impossible to declare a winner. And, there is still the possibility of a recount in both races.
In the other ten races, six contests have a winner, while four more move to a November run-off.
Shari Africk-Olefson beat Kristin Padowitz for an open seat in Circuit.
Susan Alspector beat Camille Coolidge-Shotwell for an open seat in Circuit.
Dan Casey beat Karen Berger for an open seat in Circuit.
County Judge Robert Diaz retained his seat over Mike Heise (59% - 41%)
County Judge Mike Davis retained his seat over Rhoda Sokoloff (57% - 43%)
County Judge Robert Lee retained his seat over Stephen Lustig (69% - 31%)

ReplyDeleteElisabeth Espinosa was nothing but kind to everyone one at the polls and I have never heard her badmouth Miller. On the contrary she refused to engage with others who did badmouth him. I always saw her greet Miller very respectfully. My experiences with her were nothing but positive. She ran a positive campaign and she is one of the nicest, most sincere people I have met. Your comments are unjustified and unfair. Don’t be a sore winner.
