We enter the final thirty six hours until the judicial races for 2014 are decided on Friday May 2, 2014 at 12:01 PM.
On that date and time, the eyes of the free world (or at least a few hundred lawyers and judges) will be on this blog, as the Captain brings you up to date on the judicial races.
Who has opposition?
Who got a free ride?
We will have it all.
The latest breaking news is that Judge Zabel drew opposition, supposedly from a lawyer with an agenda on a marriage case of some sort (gay marriage?).
There have been a myriad of judicial receptions all over town this week, and your favourite robed readers who are up for re-election this year having been making the rounds, eating the brie, sipping a coke, and shaking hands.
The constant contact with those who wear robes and those who want to was enough to send us to a long, hot shower, with plenty of disinfectant soap.
So stay tuned, as the news breaks, and some judges open the bubbly, while others roll up the sleeves of their robes and get to work campaigning.

REALLY NORTH OF THE BORDER JUDICIAL ELECTIONS .....
By far, my favorite candidate in this season's election cycle has to be in Panama City, Florida. In the 14th Circuit, Group 10, Incumbent Judge Jim Fensom, who is nearing retirement age, has drawn three opponents.
They include DUI criminal defense attorney:
Billy-Joe "Hoot" Crawford
And folks, that IS the way he lists his name with The Florida Bar - including the Hoot.
I think our readers could come up with some great lines on addressing the Judge during morning calendar with a name like that.

You watch.... just like 2 years ago, some asshole with no connections, no experience, 5.1 years in practice and no brains will run against a perfectly normal judge and make that judge spend the entire summer campaigning.

In order to run for Judge, you must pluck down your Qualifying Fee of $5,803.00 for Circuit Court and $5,520.80 for County Court.

ReplyDeleteM. Salazar was sued for malpractice in 1999. She blew a statute of limitations in a simple run of the mill MVA case.
ReplyDeleteDiaz de la Portilla? Another 6 year lawyer who thinks he can be a trial judge, assuming he can find the courthouse. I'm sure his experience on the school board qualifies him. When is the Bar going to up the bar admission to 10 years before becoming a judge?

All candidates in contested races, except for Marianne Salazar, have now paid their qualifying fees, in both Circuit and County Court.
As for Diaz de la Portilla and the fact that he has only been a lawyer for six years - you may want to tell that to the likes of his Campaign Chair Benedict Kuehne and the list of Endorsers that came with my invitation to his latest fundraiser; (see below). Looks to be a bunch of politicians; and is slim in attorney endorsements.

As for the suggestion that the Bar change the requirements to become a Judge from 5 years to ten years membership in the Bar, please note that the "rule" is a Constitutional law and not a Bar Rule.
See Article 5, Section 8 of the Florida Constitution that reads in pertinent part:
No person is eligible for the office of circuit judge unless the person is, and has been for the preceding five years, a member of the bar of Florida. Unless otherwise provided by general law, no person is eligible for the office of county court judge unless the person is, and has been for the preceding five years, a member of the bar of Florida.

Hottest rumor is that a sitting federal judge- "newer" to the fed bench has dropped a cool million dollars into a campaign account, is going to file in an open seat tomorrow and is going to resign from the fed bench. The Judge is "fed" up with all the fed bullcrap and the increased scrutiny on his personal life, the protection provided by the US Marshals has greatly impinged on his personal life, and his comings and goings from the love nests of his partners, not to mention the work load is such that he cannot steal away as much as he used to.

ReplyDeleteI always liked Ben K. But endorsing a train-wreck of a human being with ZERO legal experience like Renier DLP is just plain crooked and slimy. I expect that from politicians not from lawyers of Ben's character.
ReplyDeleteThat guy runs for politics so he can have a job because no one in their right mind would hire him. But because Miguel DLP is a state senator, he's obtaining endorsements.
Can someone tell me why Renier Diaz de la Portilla also has a 3 year gap between graduating law school and being admitted to the Florida Bar? I can only think of 2 reasons, and neither is good.
