This email was sent Thursday announcing the FACDL Award Winners.
Dear friends and colleagues,
Today I am extremely excited and proud to announce the award recipients who will be honored at our Annual Gala and Awards Banquet on April 26, 2014.
Each year an award named after another fearless jurist is presented in recognition of an extraordinary career contribution and for dedicated service to the improvement of the criminal justice system, this year THE HONORABLE GERALD KOGAN JUDICIAL DISTINCTION AWARD will be presented to The Honorable William Thomas.
Given, only when appropriate, this award to criminal defense lawyers who having undertaken a particularly difficult or unpopular client, represent the heart and spirit of criminal defense and epitomizes the courage of the criminal defense lawyer to stand apart (and often alone) as Liberty’s Last Champion. This year, THE RODNEY THAXTON “AGAINST ALL ODDS” AWARD will be presented to Regional Counsel Attorneys Phil Reizenstein and Kellie Peterson – for their defense of Dennis Escobar during a grueling two month long homicide trial in 2013.
Presented to a young lawyer whose hard work in the legal arena and in service to the community exemplifies what young and fearless attorneys should strive for, THE GREGG WENZEL YOUNG LAWYER’S AWARD will be presented to Assistant Public Defender Sara Yousuf.
And finally, the THE DANIEL S. PEARSON-HARRY W. PREBISH FOUNDERS AWARD will be presented posthumously to FACDL Miami's Two Time Past President Richard Sharpstein.
I hope that all of our friends and colleagues, Attorneys and Judges alike, will join us in congratulating the award recipients and their families on April 26, at the Intercontinental Hotel in Downtown Miami. Please share this email with anyone who might not have received it and who would want to congratulate the award recipients. I hope to see you all in April, congratulations to everyone!
Best regards,
Eddie Pereira
President FACDL-Miami

ReplyDeleteWill Thomas sentenced a man to 1 year in jail after he left a biker for dead. The prosecutor recommended an 8 year sentence.

ReplyDeleteTHE CAPTAIN REPORTS:
What you won't see on this BLOG.
Rumpole chastising the HEAT for getting their butt kicked by OKC.
Rumpole giving any mention to the HEAT and their six game road trip where they went 5-1 and beat the Thunder, Clippers, Suns, Warriors, and Mavs; which are five of the top eight seeds in the Western Conference.
In fact, the HEAT are 10-2 against the West's top eight teams this season having beaten all but Houston, who they have yet to play.
Rumpole noting that the HEAT are now only one game out in the loss column to the Pacers for the one seed.
Rumpole praising LB James on his masterful performance against OKC and putting to rest any doubt who the MVP of the NBA really is. Hashtag #takeabackseatKD.

ReplyDeleteWho gets the spencer aronfeld award?
ReplyDeleteAn award to the bottom feeders of regional counsel? how ludicruious.
ReplyDeleteYoung Lawyer's award given to someone who's been practicing since 2005....
ReplyDeleteThomas may be a great judge - but, he should not get the award at this point. The award should go to senior judges who have a much fuller record than Thomas.
ReplyDeleteThe award for thomas should be called the "we're so sorry to what happened to you" award.....
ReplyDeleteAs a Judge who took time out to just sit in the audience and watch the Escobar trial, I take strong exception to the bottom feeder comment. Phil and Kellie are exceptional lawyers and they proved it here. Personally, I never in a very long career as a trial lawyer and judge ever saw a better cross examination then Phil did of the lead detective. If the case was on TV he would today be a media star.
ReplyDeleteRemember that the jury heard a suppossed confession and a majority of them still voted to acquit. I don't think the comment should come down. But I needed to respond.
A Judge.
@257 pm...David O Markus....
ReplyDeleteActually he is on TV Now and doing an amazing job.
ReplyDeleteWho's doing what for shumie time today?
ReplyDeleteThere should be an award given to the assistant public defender who took ASA Tim Vandergiesen's Cadillac for a ride.
ReplyDeleteAwesome that Sharpy is getting an award, really hope his 3 kids & 30+ year wife & law partner are the family invited. Those kids deserve to hear about their dad from the criminal bar.
ReplyDeleteReally? The Kogan award to Will Thomas. Come on, Man. Aren't there much better choices? Is this, you aren't going to be a Federal judge, so we will give you an award for trying? He is not a good judge and you do disservice to Gerald Kogan by giving an award named after him to Thomas.
ReplyDeleteAn award to the so-called Regional Counsel, attorneys who can not get retained by any defendant with some means, and take money from the pockets of private attorneys who are on the wheel? This sucks. They should be soundly booed if the award is presented to them.
ReplyDeleteTake money from privates on the wheel? Sounds like bottom feeing to me.
ReplyDelete4:12 PM. I am justly proud of the award, and even more proud of the Regional Counsel's office and the attorneys I work with.
ReplyDeleteAs to whether or not we get private fees, feel free to call me to discuss it. But I cite this to you: Jack Blumenfeld is an RC3 attorney. I dare say in the 1970's, 1980's. 1990's, and 2000's Jack was and remains one of the best, most respected, and highly sought after attorneys in south Florida. I'm sure Jack tips more at restaurants than you get as a fee on a case. And I know this because I've goe out to eat with Jack, who is not just a great lawyer, but a very generous friend.
So you might not like that we exist. And you can anonymously snipe at the superb attorneys in our office. But it's not bragging when you do it. And our attorneys do it. They try cases. Give clients a great defense, and run their private practices. So go back and crawl into the hole you seeped out of when you decided to attack our office anonymously. Coward.
Nicely said Phil. You are a really good man and excellent lawyer. And you have guts, too. Who cares about the nasty words of jealous hacks.
