DR JOE DAVIS HAS PASSED AWAY

UPDATE: ECOBAR JURY HUNG. A mistrial was declared today in the case involving the murder of City of Miami Police Officer Victor Estefan. The Herald article is here, with quotes from the jury foreman. At about 3:30 today Judge Firtel declared a mistrial after the jury, having been out for five days, declared that they could not reach a verdict. The jury deliberated almost one full day after being read an "Allen Charge" yesterday after they first notified the court they could not reach a verdict. Rumor- yet to be confirmed- is that the split was in favor of acquittal.
David Ovalle  @davidovalle305 tweeted that foreman stated split was 8-4 for acquittal.
Reid Ruben, Kat Cortez and Penny Brill for the prosecution.
Phil Reizenstein and Kellie Peterson for the defense.
No word on what happens next.

Dade's famous and  long time Medical Examiner, Dr. Joe Davis has passed away. He was 89

Here is the updated and wonderfully written Herald obit  on Dr. Davis.

Dr. Davis was the medical examiner for Dade County from 1957-1996.  He trained generations of medical examiners, not to mention prosecutors, and probably more than a few defense attorneys. He was a doctor who made a great difference in this community and it is fitting that the ME's office is named after him.

  1. Dr. Davis was a true local hero and an inspriation to all. He gave his time freely to any attorney who wanted to discuss a case with him. I had a medical mal case and dr. davis had done the autopsy. I meet with him for hours and he showed me pictures of the intestines that knocked out the defense theory and the case was won because of dr. davis who never took a fee. The jury completely disregarded the highly paid defense expert and when they saw D. Davis's photos the case was over. I doubt we will ever see such a great man in the ME's office ever again. In his later years I know he was a caregiver to his wife who had medical issues herself. I am saddend by this news

  2. Dr. Joe Davis = Class. On each and every case I handled that involved his office, and my contact with him, he was always honest, straight forward with his answers and always willing to take the time to explain his position.

More people in his position would do well to handle themselves as honorably and professionally.

Thank you Joe Davis for your dedication to our community.

  5. The 'Great One' as he was fondly referred to by many saved a number of our fellow countrymen and women with his forefront approach to prevent injury. He was always willing to listen and discuss cases of all types. As a young police officer, later prosecutor he always helped me with his analysis and reasoning sometimes directing me in a position which influenced a filing decision or a not to file/present. I will always ascribe to his belief to do the right thing for the right reason. May he once again rejoice to being with Mrs. D. God Bless him and all his family.

  6. Joe Davis was respected by all. I had a case where the ME buried the wrong body. Joe himself went to the restaurant where the widow worked and personally apologized for the mistake.

He will always be remembered as the ME who could be trusted to tell the truth.

  8. Back in the old days before starbucks, cell phones, and internet porn, a body would lay around for a few days and if no one collected it the ME would come by the SAO with a few six packs and shovels and we would go help dig the hole.
    Ahh the good old days.

  11. I have always been in favor of a good full spectrum antibiotic to be used sparingly. Remember to eat some yogurt and take some probiotics as the cipro kills the good biotics and the bad.
